It was to make the show dramatic. There's literally no fucking reason to push a dog into biting you, that's the opposite of what you want to do.
His reasoning was to show he's dominant over the dog by pushing the dog, but dominance theory in dog training has been debunked many times over now, it's a 2 decade old theory based on captive wolves. We now know dogs resource guard out of fear, not just to be a cunt to you.

Not that anon but...
All dog training is operant conditioning. He essentially just uses positive punishment and negative reinforcement to train the dogs... lots of corrections.

He forces a dog to do something for the show; the dogs actually shut down and accept what is being done to them instead of allowing to do something on their own. However, with his methods it's something you need to do every single time you want a behavior. That's not really training if the behavior is not taught but is forced upon every time. It's one thing dealing with regression but its starting from step one daily. That's what happens when you use so much active avoidance. His methods are great for TV though because it creates a lot of suspense and it gets a result pretty quickly. Actual training is done in weeks though, not half a day.
