Saw a bonsai thread yesterday, seems to have died since.

so heres a new one.

Absolute beginner here, trying to grow something out of clippings, but i dont know how plants work.
So now i have some cut off branch pieces in a bucket in a shady part of the greenhouse.

any tips/tricks, advice on making clippings grow?

alternatively, other absolutely free ways to get bonsai.
>>
Don't know about about trimmings but I'm a beginner as well, just bought some stock at the nursery for like $15 and turning it into a bonsai. damn it looks ugly as fuck, I suck at pruning
>>
>>2427170
im trying to see if i can grow something without putting any money into it, so any free method of getting a tree is what im doing.

the cuttings are mostly an experiment because cloning trees sounds like a cool thing.

>>
Almost all of my recent cuttings from my ficus but the dust.

I think my usual method of covering them with Saran wrap cooked them in the heat.

Now I'm gonna have to go buy another tree. Darn.

pre-beginner here. Is there any specific/recommended resources I should be looking into, or just google up the basics and hope for the best?

I want to start with some basics before working my way into saikei or chinese penjing
>>
>>2428902
get yourself some trees and learn as you go, you can't separate learning from doing
get more than one tree (3-5 i find ideal) and don't worry about killing them, you are bound to kill a tree eventually
don't invest on any expensive tools until you're sure you need them
same goes for pots, you won't be needing dedicated bonsai pots for a very long time
it is also likely that if you were to start from seeds you'd get discouraged and/or bored. Get some cheap nursery leftovers. don't collect from nature unless you either know what you're doing or are 100% sure you can collect it easily without killing it.

also google and common sense

In my 4 Chan???

Anyway, here's a ficus cutting that's really taking off. It's about three months off the mother plant at this point.

I haven't decided if I'm going to go full cascade or slowly work the roots into neagari

Collect wild from woods around you. Free trees of decent age can be found relatively easily. Ones worth collecting are a bit more rare.

3-5 is too few. 15-20 is a decent number.

Shit was pretty fun. I had no previous interest in ham radio, but I still learned a lot and everyone there was helpful as hell. Take advantage of your seniors in any hobby. They'll always share unless they're total assholes.

Completely new to bonsais. Bought one from Home depot, no idea what species because it wasn't labeled, on clearance. Plan on adding it to a terrarium I am setting up. Also have a mimosa I grew from a seed that I'm practicing with. We had a 25 ft mimosa tree in our yard that dropped over 9000 seeds and I was terrified my chickens were gonna die so we cut it down. Of course anyone who has dealt with these monsters know the fucker is growing back in full force, the seeds are sprouting and even some of the chopped wood has sprouted leaves.

Pic Semi related: What I hope to achieve someday. Lord knows I have enough plants/seeds to achieve it eventually.

I bought it like that from the supermarket. Those are my first bonsais so I'm still looking into how to take care of them.I've read that the soil needs to be moist all the time and never dry completely, so far the tree seems to make new fresh leaves and seems healthy. Also im spraying water over the leaves daily and have a cup of water between them so it can keep the moisture up in the area. Please correct me if I'm doing something wrong.
Also I live near the sea and I have a shit ton of Terra Rosa soil, do you guys think I can use it for any of my aloe plants(aloe variegata, normie aloe the one you see in every aloe video and some weird cactus kinda looking aloe, pic related) or Bonsai(highly doubt it would do something good to bonsai as it dries extremly fast).

>>
>>2432249 Here.

So I bought some nutrient/fertilirizer thing, that is made specifically for bonsai trees. What I don't get is that it says, that I have to use it once per two weeks. Doesn't say how much of it though, it only says that you should use 30ml of it with 2l of water. I made a smaller portion of it, 0,5l with 7.5 ml fertilirizer, but that's still fucking 0,5l of water, and I would drown the poor guy if I pour it all on it.
Sorry for being retarded, but how do i apply this fertilizer thing then? Should I just add it straight to the plant, or make an even smaller dilution and water the plant with it?
>>
>>2433931
The only thing you proved is your stupidity.

This poison was used on arrow tips and got into the blood steam.

You ingested it.

I hope you can see why this completely invalidates your "point", but I doubt you do. Either way I'm not going to waste more time with you.
>>
>>2433948
30ml per 2 liter is dosage, this will give you an agreeable solution of the fertilizer in the water

from there you should use the solution for watering your plant like you would water it normally, just once every two weeks use the fertilizer solution instead of plain water, that's it.
You don't have to measure and mix each time in proportion for the precise amount you intend to water with, just make a 2 liter bottle now, keep it cool and use it every now and then as prescribed on the package

I found out that a root from a pre-bonsai I just put in a pot earlier this summer is rotting, it might have been dead at the time it potted it and just now started decaying
other roots are in tip-top shape

I figured it out because it's partly above ground and I noticed changes in colour and later it started peeling.

What I think I should do it cut it close to the trunk, smear the scar with cut paste and probably pull the bad root out from the ground. Do I do this or can the tree figure it our and just let it rot off without damaging the trunk and healthy roots?
>>
>>2434221
when soil mix do you use? i would try to figure out why the roots rooted and then decide what to do. you could cut and pull the roots but if your gonna do that why not just repot it anyway? i would personally just make sure you closely watch how you water it and repot it next spring
>>
>>2434343
regular potting soil - when I dog the thing out it had no feeder roots at all and it seemed a better option for nourishing the old roots, each as thick as my finger
I won't be repotting this plant for at least a year because it had so far only two months to establish roots so I think I'm just gonna cut the losses and snip the dead root now - it was either dead to begin with and I missed it or it was wounded during the extraction and only now rot came above ground

I cut a V shape like they do to encourage broom like growth from the stub at the top of the 20+ year old english ivy to similarly encourage budding at the top of the trunk for once. I hope I haven't made a grave mistake.
Sealed it with cut paste for now, once it dries I will strip it a little around the edge of the live bark - humidity this year is killing me with mold issues so I couldn't leave it bare.
Also uprooted it and removed all the rotten roots that didn't recover after the initial extraction before I put it in a new pot.
Now waiting for the paste to dry.

Ivy is such a great plant. It doesn't look like it but against all odds this plant is still kinda sorta alive.
>>
Hey guys, probably a very dumb question but I just want to make sure before trying my hand at this. I can just get a regular sapling and trim it back, right? I don't need to get a bonsai sapling from a bonsai nursery? Thanks a ton in advance
>>
>>2439289
If you get a sapling you'll probably want to let it grow for a few years before even really working it. It's best to start off with some bonsai or pre bonsai stock and then you can have some sapling or whatever growing while you're learning to train things properly
>>
>>2439451
Right, didn't quite mean a sapling. Was thinking more along the lines of the kind of thing you'd get at home depot which is already grown a bit

I'm in some trouble, I kept watering this guy, like i read, always making sure to keep its soil moist, but not to drench it it water, and also sprayed some water on its leaves . Things were fine ,but now I just looked at it, and all of its leaves are curling upwards, as if it's drying out or something. I don't know what to do, I gave it some water now, with a little bonsai nutrient mix in it, and sprayed some water on the leaves hoping for the best. This is sudden, I mean all I noticed is that there were one, sometimes two yellowing leaves, but I just chalked that up for the tree getting used to it's new place. Pic releated, I just sprayed water on the little guy, that's why it's looking wet at the top. How fucked am I?

I used a regular spray bottle with a light spray to give it water almost daily, mainly to get some water to the leaves itself, as for actual watering, that was like maybe every 2nd day? But I'm sure I didn't use more than 200 ml of water, since the pot is really small, it can't hold more than around double of that, otherwise it starts to spill. I mean, I made a nutrient mix for it, I dilluted it in 500ml of water, and that couldn't fit in the pot.

Anyways, is there any way to save this little guy? Leaves are still curled up, some are slightly browning, but very few leaves dropped from it. Do I water it intensively today too, give it a nutrient solution, or put it in more sunlight?

watch other videos of watering. you are supposed to get everything soaked as fuck, if you have proper bonsai soil the water will drain out. A little spray of water on the leaves isn't enough
>>
>>2443121
Yeah okay, I'll watch, but does this mean if I keep it excessively watered for a couple of days, it'll recover?
Fucking hell, I like plants, but I didn't want a bonsai for this reason, I knew I'd fuck it up
>>
>>2443122
wait a sec are you keeping it indoors? they thrive outside.
>>
>>2443123
This one is an indoor plant
>>
>>2443124
There are no "indoor bonsai plants", just particular bonsai that are hardy enough to survive indoors. If it looks bad, try put it outside.

I'll bet you it isn't

Where can I get a reasonably-priced Chinese Elm?
I've checked all local nurseries, no dice. I did find some at a local Lowe's, selling a little wilted, dying twig for $30, but that's all I saw.

if that's not good enough for you then you might be sol. my local nurseries don't carry them either except for bonsai nurseries but there expensive. if your not in a hurry grow them from seeds

there supposed to be easy to propagate from cuttings maybe try to somehow get a cutting
>>
>>2443326
don't you have a balcony or something? or an outside windowsill that could hold a pot?
Where I live it is quite common to have plants out in that way if you don't have space otherwise.
You might want to install a rail or a little guard outside so the plant doesn't fall off whenever wind blows

I thought having Bonsai was about pretty small trees. It's really about stubs in dirt

Got a wild hare up my ass last night and pruned my Acer palmatums.

One of them looks like it might be ready for a pot pretty soon. (Next year?)

Taking the cuttings when I get home from work and I'm going to plant them forest style and see what happens.

>This video is a joke right, guy fucking drowns that poor plant
Fucking lol
Bonsai aren't as delicate as you think they are.
The idea of watering is to wet the ENTIRE soil mass.
Dry soil = dead roots = slow growth or dead tree.
You're supposed to water liberally so the entire soil mass gets wet. Using proper bonsai soil, it's impossible to over-water or "drown" the plant. The idea is to completely saturate the soil.
If a plant is not in bonsai soil and it gets very dry, you should submerge it completely in water for an hour. Dry potting soil is hydrophobic and resists rehydration, causing dry spots, dead roots and an unhappy plant.

>>
>>2446270
Looks young and lacks trunk thickness + taper. I'd give it a few more years at least.
>>
>>2447098
True.

I may pull it out of the pot in the spring and drop in into the dirt now that I have a house and can plant things a little more permanently.

I have plans to build out a better display bench and maybe a big raised grow bed next to it so we'll see.

I've also considered the air pruning route

Nice sized pond basket + well-draining soil (Napa Auto floor-dry DE #8822, akadama, turface, whatever) + aggressive fertilization can rival in-ground growth speeds.
If it is well-rooted in its current soil, you could slip pot it into the ground (Pull at the base to take out the root-ball without disturbing it, dig a hole in the ground and plant it properly) right now, instead of waiting until spring. Important part is to not disturb the root ball more than necessary right now.
>>2447078
I'm assuming you used root hormone powder to stimulate root growth on these guys. Maples don't tend to take too well from cuttings, which is why air layering is popular with them. I would expect at least several of those cuttings to not take.
>>
>>2447170
They shouldn't be root bound at all. These are cuttings that I picked up at the beginning of the year from a local nursery for $5 each. I've made a point not to mess with them as much as possible this year because last year, I bought a cutting from them right when I first started getting into bonsai and killed it from lack of patience.

I also chopped the trunk in half(again, lack of patience) and successfully rooted it with hormone, so maybe these will make it.

I reckon I will wait until the spring and get the three that I have into good air pruning pots with good bonsai soil. The soil they're in at the moment just plain old potting soil that I had lying around when I was ready to get them out of the little 4" pots they came in.

One will have to stay in dirt for a while longer for sure, I have the roots wrapped around a rock so that one isn't getting touched until next year no matter what.
>>
>>2445659
wondering myself.
also since you're in tx how about texas mountain laurel? They have the good bark, are nice canopy formers, and here in az are currently covered in fat seed pods
>>
>>2447496
>>2445659
The leaves of both of those are kinda large but as long as you have the seeds or can find the plants, why not? Add in Palo Verde too for fun. In my area Siberian Elms are every where and like to reseed themselves in my potted plants, may dig some up this year.
>>
>>2447611
googling kinda led me to the same conclusion. both would make nice miniatures maybe 4 ft high?

I'm now thinking maybe acacias, many varieties, some clumping, small leaves and flowers, if you can find them with small enough thorns. There are also local v.'s of Bursera microphylla which could be a candidate.
