Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Thanks, I will. I had wanted a pet fish for a while, just walked into Petco one day and the guy basically set me up to wish I had a better tank, more knowledge, missing tons of equipment. Perfect employee. I had to keep coming in to buy shit. Bought ghost shrimp from him on suggestion, betta beat the shit out of them and ate them, same with some neon tetras.

He said my dude is just aggressive but I've since discovered it is just a crowding thing. When I have space to set up a 5gal I will, It does look odd and small, because the damned picture is photoshopped for no apparent reason. All of the fish are the same picture, and despite it being a cylinder there is no distortion on the rocks like there is in real life. It's 2.5 and I really only intended to keep 1 fish in it.

Hopefully I can keep him healthy for a few more months till I can afford and have space for a bigger tank.

What's a good small fish that doesn't mind being alone?
I'm going for a planted micro aquarium (about 1.5g) and I'll put a couple of shrimp in there, but I thought I could experiment with a small, hardy fish. Of course, I can obviously only house one guy in there.
I love tetras, but would having a single one work?
Would a guppy do?
>>
How much should I have to pay for a 70 gallon tank?
I thought building one would be cheaper, but the glass is ridiculously expensive, online at least. Looked at lowes and they don't even have 1/4 inch glass only 1/8 or 3/32.
Then I look for tanks and I see 75 gallons selling for $550.
I look it up and see people claiming they get tanks for a dollar a gallon so that would only be around $70.

I just need a damn glass box

First time aquarium owner. Currently cycling the aquarium to get it ready to add fish. Was thinking about 1 Dwarf Gourami, 3 Corys and a school of endlers or tetras. Think they'll get along fine in a 10g tank? Also, do you guys have any recommendations about plants and stuff for the tank? Are there certain plants that would help balance PH/ ammonia levels? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
>>
>>2426958
snail

Trust me anon, I spent months looking for micro fish. There just aren't any that will be happy in that small of a tank.

You could get away with a 2.5, pretty well planted, and a betta, but that's the min. Even then, you would need to change stuff up in the tank often to keep your fish from being bored.

>>

All plants are a 20 foot high border wall against nitrogen

Your pH should just be stable, unless you put a serious effort into changing it and have soft water which has less stability. It rarely ever matters as long as it's between 6.5 and 7.5, your fish will adapt
>>
>>2426974
>I look it up and see people claiming they get tanks for a dollar a gallo
That is petco's sale, which is legit but only tends to go up to 40G aquariums.

>>2427009's suggestion is good. Also search for local fishkeeper groups. They tend to have even better deals (and more trustworthy) than craig's.

Also, $550 even for a brand new, off-the-shelf 70G tank is insane. Where are you looking? Is it some special tank, e.g. acrylic or low iron?
>>
>>2427223
Oscars probably.

Hard to say exactly since nearly all fish are aggressive under the right circumstances (e.g. if you have a sick fish, practically everyone is going to take a bit out of it if it's bad enough).

In the world of cichlids Oscars pretty ho-hum yet a lot of people think they're the ultimate and those people are usually ill-prepared to really care for a fish that gets that big, and do not understand that much smaller fish will get wrecked by large fish.

I dunno. Super imperfect comparison but that's my pick.

Some are better than others.

Anything fast growing tends to be much better than anything slow growing.

Floating plants like duckweed tend to be better than anchored/planted plants, however that has downsides so I doubt anyone would rely solely on floating plants, if at all.

Aquaponics is the king of them all if you have a good external setup, e.g. a light source directly feeding the plants. Most people use something hardy and super fast growing like Pothos, although many alternatives (some maybe slightly better even) do exist. But again this has downsides: the whole point of having a small tank is kind of moot as you are now making it effectively take more room with the giant ass plant, and it doesn't even add to the aesthetics of the tank internally.

Even more exotic solutions exist once you go that route, like an algae scrubber, which is basically aquaponics focused entirely on green algae growing on a medium outside of the tank with intense light and water pumps to/from your tank. But again, larger footprint for no aesthetics and waaaaaay out of the scope of such a small tank.
>>
>>2427133
>Tetras and guppy get stressed if they can't school.
Ironically if they're super unstressed (e.g. they're in a large, single species, heavily planted, tank) they stop schooling.

There's a few youtube examples of it. It's pretty cool as they start developing individual behavior. I'll try to find the particular video I'm thinking of. I think the guy put like 100+ of them in a 100G aquarium with no other fish.

Guys, I got my Oscar last week, but I think I spooked him. When he can't see me, he swims around and acts like an Oscar should, but whenever he sees me he just swims behind the log and hides from me. He peeks out about once a minute, and then darts back in when he sees I'm still there.

Is there some way I can get him to stop being afraid? He isn't eating now because he just hides whenever I come near him.

Marimo is practically indestructible, it'll grow and even start to attach to stuff. To be honest though, it's kind of annoying and collects debris really fast, if you trim it with scissors then you'll get tons of it popping up in strange places throughout the tank. Real moss is way better imo, something like weeping moss.

Depends on the individual store and the employees working there. Some pet chains are good and some family owned shops suck ass.
Go to whatever shops are around you and spend a while looking at the fish. If they're selling fish out of a tank with sick looking fish in it, or if there are any dead fish sitting in the tank, it's probably better to look elsewhere.

Fish process online aren't bad, but shipping costs will kill you. At least $35 for shipping that's fast enough to ensure they arrive alive, especially if you live somewhere hot.

I'd really like to get an aquarium but I can't find a good stand. They're all either over designed or too expensive.

I don't want one that has the aquarium built in I'd just like to my aquarium on a cabinet and two plants on the side.

Why is this so... hard to find?

Am I searching for the wrong thing?
>>
>>2428129
Aquarium stands have to hold up hundreds of pounds, so you're not going to find something like a TV entertainment center.

I would suggest looking for one meant for a larger tank. E.g. if you want a 20g long, get one meant for a 40g. That'll give you space on the sides.

However it'll be expensive.

You can always go the diy route.

>>
>>2428134
Do you have the tank already?
If you really want a brand new stand for a good price you'll just have to keep an eye out for sales.
I got my 40 breeder stand from petco.com for about $80 because it was on sale and there was a "40% off any one item" coupon if you were new signing up for an account.
Recently PetSmart had a sale that was half off any stand with the purchase of any Top Fin kit 5.5 gallons or higher, so you could buy a $30 kit and get $80-120 off of a stand.
If you need/want a tank as well, PetSmart occasionally has some really good sales on their tank/stand combos.

If used isn't a deal breaker, keep an eye on classifieds websites like Craigslist.

>>2429001
Undergravel filters are obsolete. For something foolproof get an internal sponge filter, for something with huge capacity get a canister filter. Look at Juwel filters, they're easy to clean and don't look awful. You also can fit the heater inside them.
>>
>>2429001
They clog easily and are difficult to maintain. You can put powerheads on the lift tubes so it is pushing water up through the gravel instead, and that makes a pretty decent filter.
Otherwise, canister filters like in >>2429013 is the way to go.

Looks ugly and dirty and I don't think you could keep RCS alive in such a small container with no filter. The hardscape looks good, but maybe try different plants. And a filter. Maybe an intact marimo moss ball instead with something like java moss, java fern, or maybe dwarf sag. All of which you'd need a half decent light to grow well, though.
>>
>>2429014
My Sponge filters aren't any harder to maintain than my HOB. All you have to do is squeeze them out every now and then. Getting ones with more porous sponges also helps. Certainly for me, the tiny bit of extra maintenance they require is well worth saving 200$ on a canister
filter that'll do the same thing. Unless you have a really heavy load, that is.

>>2429191
I'm gonna add a few more plants later on. I was initially looking into dwarf sagittaria too, but my local shop doesn't have any right now.
As for it being possible to house red cherries, I've seen many people successfully do it, with even worse situations ( like, less gallons, no lights, no plants etc). I think I can pull it off.
>>
>>2429228
I've heard of plenty of people running sponge filters on goldfish tanks, so I think it'd work fine. Solid Gold aquatics on YT comes to mind; she's a fancy goldfish breeder and she runs sponge filters on all her tanks IIRC. (and she's also a total fucking QT)
Anyways, most people think they're horrendously ugly so anon will probably opt for a different filter. But sponge filters would certainly work and they're way cheaper than any other kind of filtration.
>>
My mother, bless her senile heart, bought me a common pleco for the algae in my tank. Fine, whatever, I can just deal with it until it gets too big. Put the thing in my tank after QT and it COMPLETELY shits up my tank. I'm talking piles and piles of pleco shit all over the tank. It's only about 4" long, what the fuck? Is this just because I had a lot of algae, or are plecos all this dirty? I want to put him back in my tank, but i'm not vacuuming it twice a week.
>>
>>2429021
small changes in temp are a lot for small amounts of water. it can get too warm faster than you can do something about it. just don't fucking douse it in something like a space heater haha
>>
>>2429370
Please don't kill the pleco
>>
>>2429370
they're shit factories. Worse than goldfish.

only redeeming factor is they also eat their own shit, so that helps a little.
>>
>>2429381
Why would I kill it?

>>2429398
All plecos, or just common plecos? I did really want a clown pleco, but I think not after this experience. I'm mostly just shocked nobody's ever mentioned this about them before. Sure, I knew that they obviously don't really clean your tank at all, but this is ridiculous. I'd like to declare the common pleco Worst Fish in the hobby

Looking for a bit of shrimp advice.

I had some cherry shrimp in with my Betta. He ate them, or so I thought. I got three of the biggest amano shrimp the shop had on Friday. I haven't seen them since putting them in the tank. I mean they've flat out gone. They aren't in the plants, under the filter, in the rocks or in the Betta. The tank has a lid.

Two of the cherry shrimp have reappeared however and the Betta has either not noticed or made peace.

What is going on?
>>

Gourami?

>>2429435
Shrimp are way better at hiding that you'd think possible.

Also, have you actually seen your betta be aggressive towards the shrimp?
>>

There not peaceful I tried. And it's too hard to figure out which ones are males when all the ones in the store are still small.

Thank you for the suggestion though.

I need an aquarium heater that can heat up to 20 gallons and that has a USB plug in, so that I can hook it up to a solar powered battery pack outside

>>
>>2429474
I'm not sure, I was hoping to find the heater first, then find an appropriate battery to power it.

Need it to be between 75-82, but preferably one of those heaters that just shuts off at 78 F.
>>2429477
Adapter? I'm not sure if that would work...I need it to be solar powered because I have no direct line to connect to the electricity in the house. Otherwise I would just run an extension cord. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean..
>>
>>2429477
Do Cories get as big as bettas? I thought they didn't get that big...I mean, I would think a school of them, all getting to three inches, would be too much for a ten gallon...
>>
>>2429479
This is sounding more and more ridiculous and terrible. Run an extension cord dude. Solar power is not that great. To get something powerful and reliable enough to power a heater, it would likely take about as much money as just hiring a licensed electrician to put in another outlet in your house (the benchmark being $250 per outlet).

The cheapo solar panels you see provide shit power, and batteries get expensive plus they need to be replaced every few years.

You're practically building a Rube Goldberg machine here.

i just bought 6 of these dank motherfuckers today. the pet store girl dropped one on the ground and i had to ever-so-delicately pinch his little tail to pick him up. it appears to have killed him. shit actually makes me sad. how long can they survive out of the water if they're wet? a few minutes, right? i could've gotten a piece of paper or something i guess....was panicking...

anyway, thoughts on gravel vacuuming for shrimp tanks? there's nothing else in there, so i figure i can probably just throw in one snail to aerate the substrate and not really have to vacuum anymore, just filter and change water

How do you know it wasn't killed on impact? Far more likely scenario unless you are truly hamfisted.
>>
>>2429609
>How do you know it wasn't killed on impact? Far more likely scenario
no it's not. tiny things are typically not injured by falling owing to their low terminal velocity.

I know it wasn't killed on impact because i picked it up and it was fucking alive and then swam around. he just didn't make it...
>>
>>2429610
It was likely stress then, not injury. Shrimp are notoriously susceptible to stress death. Did it lose color before dying? That's usually a key indicator. There was very likely nothing you could have done.

Also falling impact can actually hurt a lot inverts, especially shrimp. Something about their bodies not exactly suited to open air plus being weighted down with water plus their bodies just not being very muscular while having a soft-ish shell just makes them not very robust.
>>
>>2429613
yeah i was giving some thought to it and shrimp really have awful, awful bodies for falling

oh well. You know, i got these because my fish keep dying, and i tell myself "i won't care if shrimp die" and now i'm pressing F for shrimp bro all night

Nothing cool. Get a bigger tank. I personally would not really keep any fish that aren't bettas in a 10g anyways. I'd suggest dwarf gouramis in a larger tank, though they lack the sassy personalities that bettas have. You'd need a school of cories, at least 6, so don't get them if you're not willing to do that. Dwarf puffers are a little out there but IMO they're the coolest thing you can put in a 10g that isn't bettas. They aren't peaceful, though.

I need recommendations for plants to put in my 150g native species aquarium... I bought some shit from petsmart but they don't grow very fast. they do grow though. The tank is unheated and stays anywhere from 65 in the winter to ~72 in the summer. I have a couple bluegill/crappie/perch in there

>-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
I don't know... the tank is cycled and has had fish in there for 6 months now. ammonia nitrate and nitrite are at normal levels i guess idk exact numbers. my water is city water and on the hard side. PH last i knew was between 7 and 8.

I don't have much natural sunlight hitting the tank. there are two LED lights over the top of it.

I have the plants in seachem flourite black substrate. This is about the extent of my knowledge on what the tank is like

anyways, can anyone suggest some plants that will grow well for me? If at all possible I'd like to replace all the fake plants with real ones

Looks fine to me. Go ahead and start your colony, anon. The fish may predate on the shrimplets, but most will probably survive because of how much cover there is in your tank. Danios are also schooling fish, so you shouldn't have just one, but whatever.
Also, what filter are you running? HOBs may suck up shrimp if you don't cover the intake.
>>
>>2429870
Sounds like you don't know enough to maintain the tank you have yet. Buy a test kit, join a planted tank forum, and actually do your research. Obviously, shit isn't going to go well with "well idk the numbers" and "some shit from petsmart" and "two random LEDs".
>>
I'm starting my first tank by myself, little 10g tank, my brother said I need to fill the tank and set it up for 2 days before adding fish, is that correct?
>>
>>2430031
No. You have to cycle it first, which will take over a month. Don't get fish until you understand the nitrogen cycle.
>>
>>2430025
Well, there were originally two Danios, they bred, and the runt was the only baby one that survived. All of the schooling fish I've kept so far have bullied each other constantly, and since he's so small I figured it would kill him. So I'm keeping him alone until he's an adult.
Yeah, it's a HOB filter. I'll stick some moss on the intake as a safety measure for the shrimp.
Thanks Anon

So I was buying plants for my 3gal shrimp tank, and the lfs guy accidentally gave me a guppy fry which I didn't notice until I got home. Fast forward a few months and the guppy has grown quite large. It seems fine but I'm worried that it's miserable because it has no other guppies to school with.

What should I do? I don't think I can fit more guppies into a 3gal. Is it fine by itself or should I get rid of it? Could I just give it back to the fish store?
>>
>>2430082
flush it down the toilet. its a fish lol. or dont it's been fine for 3 months, he's probably doing just fine. just because you feel that he feels lonely doesnt make him lonely. i dont think fish have the capability to feel emotions
>>
>>2430082
first thing you should understand is that guppies don't school, they shoal which is very different

you can have a male and a pair of females if you want while they're small but throw them in a bigger tank later. if you give it to the LFS there's a 99% chance it will go in the feeder tank, or if they're concerned it will track disease in then straight into a predator tank or sink drain
>>
>>2430091
>>2430085
I don't have a bigger warm water tank to throw them in. All I have is this and a 50gal with goldfish.

I guess I'll just keep the guppy by itself. Thanks for the advice.

Hey guys, I have piranhas and a pleco, but I was wondering what other fish go together with these? I'm guessing something that also has an armor-like skin like the pleco, so what kind should I get?
Oh and how do you guys grow seeds for in the aquarium, do you just put it in a heated bucket with a lamp above it?
>>
>>2430112

>>

>>
>>2430139
pretty sure he was trolling... piranha will gang up on other fish if you neglect to feed them often enough. or if the other fish gets sick they will also gang up on it.

Just asking for the best way to grow seeds underwater I guess.
>>
>>2430155
every tank is an individual

piranha are only opportunistic, a healthy oscar will probably be fine. they don't particularly want food that puts up a fight. they might gang up on it though, that's the best answer you're gonna get
>>
>>2430163
wat

can't say without knowing what you've got. there are very few aquatic plants that seed and the vast majority propagate from rhizomes, bud, or bulbs

if it's in a bucket of water with a light I almost guarantee nothing will grow since you don't have gas exchange, flow, nitrates, minerals, or anything
>>
>>2430168
Okay, thanks. Then I'll probably get an oscar as they seem pretty chill when not eating. Ganging up wont be an issue as there are (sadly) only 2 piranhas and I don't suspect the pleco of doing anything other than shitting everywhere.

All three are easy to grow, don't require specialized lighting and cover a tank quickly.
>>
>>2430284
>what plant should I get that grows underwater, isn't too expensive and would be easy to fill my aquarium with
Anacharis. Get a few plants, cut them down to a decimetre each, and just stick them into the gravel. When they get tall enough, cut them off at the middle and stick the top in the gravel to create a new plant.
>>
>>2430284

This. Stick to those plants. You're not mentally equipped to handle taking care of anything else, to be honest. Most of your ignorance is excusable, but seriously, who the fuck thinks you can just put any plant underwater? Where the fuck were you raised?
>>
>>2430034
Buying starter bacteria doesn't circumvent the need to cycle an aquarium correctly. If you don't understand the nitrogen cycle and the need for a cycled tank, you should NOT own fish. Period.

>>
>>2430305
I don't have the attention span to check all your posts, but if you don't already, get a good quality LED light, preferably finnex brand if you've got loads of cash to shell out. Beamswork if you don't. Without a good light, you're unlikely to grow shit, even the hardiest plants.
I'd also recommend adding a liquid fertilizer like excel and using root tabs. This will help your plants a lot and would help you keep anything beyond java moss alive. By the way, don't bury the rhizome of java moss or anubias or it may rot.
Also, do not even bother trying to carpet shit without co2 injection. I've tried plenty of "no co2 needed" carpet plants and they all die, look awful, or take actual years to carpet. I don't think a pleco would ruin one, but it is impractical for your tank.
>>
>>2430320
Okay thanks for the advice, don't have any decent growing lights, just the standard tl-tubes in my aquarium and a LED-strip I'm using temporarily as I don't get much sun.
Too bad the carpeting won't work without a lot of effort and/or money.

Also, most of my posts are about me thinking the €0,50/1000 seeds I got from China were legit and that grass and similair above water plants could grow underwater aswell.

Hey /aq/ I have a slight problem.

I have a 60 gallon fresh water planted.

The air supply machine I have is really loud, even under the cabinet with closed doors.

And the airstone shooting out bubbles is loud as well - even if I disconnect one of the lines on the dual air supply.

All this humming is horrible for people who have to listen to my very delicate microphone that picks up everything.

I really just want a quiet tank/room, how do I achieve this?
>>
>>2430338
I don't have this problem myself, so I can't say how well it works, but an easy solution should be putting it inside of a box filled with sand. Do keep in mind to provide a clear path for air to come in.

The airstone itself shooting out bubbles makes half of the humming noise.

Dude's Finnex suggestion is pretty much your quality-tier go-to solution if you got some cash. There are some crazy expensive options above that but generally Finnex is considered great for the vast majority of people.

Beamswork is also popular among super budget people. I and a few others here have had great success with Green Element EVO (their 3W LED series is pretty fucking intense).
>>
>>2429429
They aren't as big as you are wanting, but you could keep a pair of dwarf/pea pufferfish in a ten gallon tank.
>>
>>2430104
He's fine if he's not showing any signs of stress. People WAAAAY over exaggerate the need for some microfish to shoal. Under a lot of very low stress situations, these shoaling or even schooling fish will stop shoaling/schooling naturally even if there's 100 others in the tank with them. There's lots of youtube examples of this where people have a species tank of cardinals or neons with dozens or hundreds and very few, if any, school.
>>
>>2430431
I'm pretty tight on money right now, so maybe the finnex planted+ as that is only $40 more than the one you recommended at $130 and has some nice features, but not the more expensive stuff.
Anyway, how bright is the lunar mode on the Green Element Evo? I've got the aquarium standing not too far from my bed and don't want to hang curtains or something.
>>
>>2430470
>Anyway, how bright is the lunar mode on the Green Element Evo?
To human eyes it's not that bright, but the PAR it puts out is stupid and will cause algae blooms at full power.

THis is for the 3W LED versions. The 1 and 1.5W LED versions will differ significantly.

100% of us that have the 3W LED versions use a dimmer. I may convert this tank to a CO2 dosed tank and put it back up to 100% though.

Cory over on Aquarium Co-Op has a really good review on a whole slew of lights including Finnex, Beamworks, and Green Element. He uses an actual PAR meter.

bumping this question

Do I even need an air supply for the fish?

Or am I just looking for water agitation?

Because I have an under water propeller thing that pushes the water around, not sure if that would work in place of air supply.
>>
Has anyone tried putting freshwater clams in their aquarium?

Was considering throwing 1 or 2 into my 10 gallon.
>>
>>2430590
All you need is the surface agitation. Bubbles are good for that because they spread out. In my 100 gallon tank I have my filter outflow pointed upwards at an angle to agitate that half of the tank, and a powerhead on the other side. It creates a current my river fish like, but more importantly it agitates around half the surface of the water. I've never had oxygen problems, even before I got the powerhead.

Pretty much does tho.

I uninstalled my air supply and installed the circulator.

I'm now hearing my computer hum for the first time in at least half a year!

I can't believe I put up with that humming for so long!

And the fish really seem to be enjoying the fast current.

Just make sure the tank also has some areas with still water. If the fish can't find some place to relax they'll get stressed.

I've found it's actually easier and less stressful to shrimp to simply pick them up by the base of their antennae.
They can survive until their gills dry out. Between several minutes and a couple hours.

If you have a lot of plants, you don't need to vacuum. Otherwise just do it slowly and carefully, and use something that doesn't have any kind of catch in it so that if you do accidentally suck up a shrimp, it just passes through into the bucket and you can net it out afterward. I like using a piece of airline tubing with a drinking straw attached to the end.

>>2429807
Buy a grindal worm culture on eBay. You'll have high quality live food forever and the only running cost is a bit of oatmeal and yeast when you propagate or transfer the culture.
Daphnia, fruit flies, and vinegar eels are other options, but they're more difficult to keep a running culture of.

>>2429836
leave them in for 2-3 days, then take them out. If the shrimp haven't eaten them by then there's a chance that small fleshy bits stuck to the exoskeleton will start to rot in the water (though if it's a larger tank it'll have a negligible effect).
>>
>>2430592
Don't waste your time with them. Just get snails or shrimp instead.
>>
>>2430997

>>
>>2430913
It's probably fine, but's going to depend on the Betta. Emperor tetras are peaceful and shouldn't give him much trouble, but they have longer trailing fins than more commonly kept tetras like glowlights or neons, and there's no way to be 100% sure whether or not the Betta will try nipping at them.
So go ahead and try it if you want them, but have a backup plan just in case.

>>2431007
>women hatchetfish
No men? That's lame.

If you're doing larger shrimp like amano, I'm keeping some pearl gourami and Bolivian rams with mine without issue.
If you want cherry shrimp you'll just have to provide a lot of cover so they can hide well, as even the tetras could eat young ones.

Looks like the peanut butter jar I keep on my kitchen windowsill and stuff spare plants into (I moved it to take the picture).

1.5 gallons is large enough to keep a few cherry shrimp without much issue, but they'll almost certainly never breed. Also, that container is rather tall, which means it's more at risk of low oxygen levels, especially in the lower regions. I'd definitely suggest some faster-growing plants like najas or hornwort, and some floating or emersed plants. You could hang a small hydroponics pot into the tank with some foam in it and plant a pothos or Spathiphyllum in it.

>>2429951
MTS can clone themselves and give live birth, so they can propagate very, very quickly. I try to keep them out of small containers for that reason. A single, young ramshorn or pond snail would be better IMO. Single and young because they're hermaphroditic and any two can impregnate each other, and they can lay multiple egg sacs after a single mating.
A small nerite might work, but you'd have to worry about it climbing out of the container.

Long or tall? You could put more than twice that many neons in there if that is the only kind of fish that you want in there. I prefer rummy nose tetras myself, but a big school of neons in a planted tank is a really beautiful sight.

If you want things to go with the neons, you could go with 10 neons, a dwarf gourami, (Great centerpiece fish for smaller tanks and has lots of color morphs!) And maybe 6-8 otos. You could probably throw in a mystery snail in there too. They are actually really nice to have around.

You could replace the dwarf gourami with a betta or maybe a paradise fish. You could also switch the otos with 6 smaller Cory cats (peppered, jullie, panda, etc. Just not the aeneus aka bronze or albino Cory) or a group of ghost shrimp or maybe a large swarm of cherry shrimp. (Cherry shrimp only if your tank has lots of places to hide) Cool thing about cherry shrimp is that they will breed in the tank so as long as they can hide, you should never run out of them.

>>
>>2431821
Neon tetras can be really iffy. They're highly susceptible to stress death from being moved around or from unstable water parameters. If you want to go that route, I'd say familiarize yourself with your LFS's guarantee policy.
Glowlight and black neon tetras are easier to deal with. Zebra danios, white cloud mountain minnows, and harlequin rasboras are also very hardy and easy to take care of, and IMO they're quite a lot more entertaining than neons. Celestial pearl danios and emerald dwarf rasboras are some very, very nice nano fish that can be either very hardy or incredibly delicate, depending on where they were sourced from and how they were raised.

Starting with 8-10 small, mid-dwelling fish and working your way up from there is a good way to start. It's good to give 3-7 days between adding groups of fish, but not completely necessary as long as you keep good track of the water parameters. It's also very useful to have a quarantine tank for newly purchased fish.

I'd suggest eventually getting a group of bottom dwelling fish like dwarf cories or khuli loaches. Otocinclus are also very nice, but they have trouble adjusting to new tanks. Peacock gudgeons are easy and make interesting oddball fish for the bottom level.

If you'd like a centerpiece fish, Bolivian rams are peaceful and easy. Swordtails are kind of considered plebian here, but they come in a lot of very nice colors (I really like the tricolor koi ones), and they're very hardy fish. You probably want just one or two males, to avoid being overrun with babies. Several small gourami would also be good for the mid-level, such as dwarf, sparkling, and honey gourami.

Java moss kinda sucks compared to say, phoenix or flame moss.

Any species of Marsilea looks great when it spreads and is easy to keep. Go with M. crenata or minuta for ezmode glosso-like carpet, or M. quadrifolia for larger sometimes 4-lobed leaves.

Scoot the small plants together forming a nice cluster instead of having odds and ends strewn about. Pockets of bare substrate at the front of the tank can balance out and enhance the look of the greenery behind them.

Removed the Java moss and wrapped it around the spray bar. Moved the small red plants to the right and some in front of caves on left. I'm thinking of getting marselia hirsuta. Also removed the water Sprite and placed it in a separate container so the roots can grow out some. They are too small and won't stay anchored, just going everywhere and making a mess. I'll move them back in and place them behind the spray bar I've they've grown out a bit. Got some plants at Petco from the sale they're having. Not sure if they're even aquatic though. Worried about that fern on the left and that tall green stem plant on the right.
