Here's a closeup of the foliage and pods.
I took some of the pods one day thinking I'd try and start some seeds, but they didn't have any seeds in them, just this spongy green flesh.

Botanist here, I'm looking it up in the dichotomous key.

Plant
pl/an/t id thread?
Can anyone tell me what this is? It's around 3-4 feet in height, has large leaves. Found in southwest MO, growing in just about full shade under cedar trees.

Also something has been eating the fuck out of it, didn't see anything on it when I took this though. Haven't seen many Japanese Beetles around here lately, so it may be caterpillars.
It's probably not going to be much use, but here's the stem/trunk. It's clearly some sort of tree/woody bush.

>dichotomous key
pretty sure that's what you sprinkle on it when it gets aphids, mr. botanist

First guess is Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate', Chocolate Boneset. That one's highly toxic, so I wouldn't risk it.
