They're related to each other and even have huge similarities
>>
I like spiders, but it's probably some instinctual revulsion towards 8 legged things that may or may not be venomous. Crabs don't have the potential to bite.
>>
>>2426292
I don't think crabs or scorpions are okay. Still trigger me less than spiders though, yes.
The problem might be that spiders are... awfully more common in my area than either crabs or scorpions.
>>
>>2426292
i think it's some evolutionary purpose, humans that are innately frightened by spiders are more likely to survive and not die to spider bites
>>

>Crabs don't have the potential to bite.

my flat is on grass level which means I get visited by those really tough looking and palm sized spiders that usually hide in dark corners.

while they're not dangerous (might cause you a nice bite close to a wasp sting if you're unlucky to have one in your pants) it's the way they move that triggers the fuck out of me.
they move REALLY FUCKING FAST while also moving really robot like. especially no fun at 2am when they love to be really active.
>>
>>2426292
>They're related to each other
That's not a great comparison.

Chelicerates diverged from the rest of arthropods about 450 million years ago, at the end of the Cambrian.

Crabs and spiders are less related to each other than you are to a sea urchin.
>>
>>2426301
>modern science

Fucking lol. Who gives a flying fuck about your pitiful speculations over a fucking sea urchin that supposedly lived over 4,500,000 of your lifespans ago.

Do you browse this board just to make these posts?

I have seen you in a lot of threads now, always with very similar posts and the same lingo.

Who is actually in the wrong here?
>>
Well, first of all humans are infinitely more likely to run into spiders than crabs in everyday life.
Secondly, crabs can give you a pretty painful pinch but they won't inject venom into you (I'm aware the vast majority of spiders won't either, but most people are ignorant about these things, and tend to think spiders and snakes are evil and out to get them).
And lastly, while I like spiders, you have to admit it's pretty creepy the way spiders walk on their silk and crawl in mid air right in front of you.
>>
>>2426293
>>2426296
This has literally been proven wrong. Babies aren't scared of spiders.

Fear of spiders results from their erratic, fast movement, and their geometry. Plus there is a theory that arachnophobia is widespread because spiders came from space, and are not native to Earth.

I get triggered by spider crabs since they are even bigger than both spiders and crabs.
>>
>>2426389
>Plus there is a theory that arachnophobia is widespread because spiders came from space, and are not native to Earth.

No. There's an actual theory that states that its embedded in a lot of us through evolution because they can be poisonous.
>>
>>2426334
Maybe the fact that babies brained aren't fully developed, and thus might not have developed said fear biological fear yet, could be a factor.
>>

Wtf? Name one poisonous crab you dipshit
>>
it's pretty obvious why there's no real widespread fear of crabs among humans, honestly. I actually do like spiders, and I don't hesitate to coax the slower ones into my hand when getting them the fuck out of my home, but those large ass motherfuckers are scary as FUCK.

Crabs:
>generally pretty slow
>easy to capture and subdue
>we eat them
>live outside of human dwellings
>only live in coastal areas; most people very rarely encounter them
>can really only snib snab you, which is easily avoidable by picking them up correctly
>no real cultural fear of them outside of the basic human instinct not to touch shit that can cut your finger off

Large spiders:
>live almost everywhere humans do
>live inside of homes
>VERY fast
>very sneaky
>venomous and there's no reliable way to hold them or subdue them
>can hospitalize or in rare cases kill people
>most cultures actively instill the fear of them in people
>many studies argue that humans are born with an instinctual fear of arachnids
>>
>>2426296
>>2426334
always really weird to see /an/ons take such absolute stances on these topics. Sometimes I wonder if most of this board has even taken an intro bio class.

arachnophobia, like many phobias, is something you learn from family/community members at a young age. it's not innate but some individuals have a genetic disposition toward developing the phobia. just like how baby chimps have no fear of snakes, but if they watch a video of an adult chimp being scared by a snake, then the juvenile adopts that phobia.

They do kill people in rare cases and it is hard to catch and subdue large spiders in most cases. I'm not sure what the fuck you think you're talking about trying to say otherwise.

>They do kill people in rare cases and it is hard to catch and subdue large spiders in most cases.
You should really have to back up that claim, only small spiders kill people. Unless you think a dime counts as large.

As for picking them up, being too afraid to pick them up doesn't count as hard to catch and subdue.

Some instincts don't manifest until an animal reaches a certain level of development. The most obvious example would be mating instincts, which don't appear until an animal hits puberty.

A fear of spiders instinct might not appear in humans until the brain's visual processing abilities hit a certain level.
>>
>>2428592
Cultures that eat spiders do not develop fear of them. Incidentally, at least one of these lives near an actually dangerous species of spider.
>>
Are you feeling it now Mr. Crabs?
>>
>>2426292
Actually I find both repulsive as a little kid.
>>
Crabs don't hide in my home and dart across the wall at supersonic speeds while I'm about to go to bed.
>>
>>2426292
Big arachnophobia here.

It's mostly the skin, the hairyness and the speed. There's also the traction and that if you lose sight of them, you could have no idea where it is.

Crabs are slow, hard and predictable.
>>
>>2426332
All spiders, except 3 families according to wikipedia, are venomous, it's one of their features. The vast majority are non lethal of course, but just wanted to correct.
>>
>>2428927
Yes, but they mostly have no interest in using that venom on humans
>>
>>2428933
Even if they do it doesn't matter, most are probably weaker than bee's venom.

1. My fingers are long, thin, and bony.
2. I live in Australia, I don't give a fuck about big spiders.
>>
I'm not scared of spiders, but it's a learned behavior. It's the general "fuck there's a bug ahhh!" instinct that kicks in when I feel something crawling on me or flying into my face. I feel really sad if I kill a spider by accident in a flailing fury.

Picture related.

And another. These were my favorite. Tan jumping spiders. Always got a lot of them when I lived in a more rural setting with lots of trees. Never seen another since I moved to the suburbs.
