Does this sound like rabies to you? Seems like the onset is kind of fast but rabies but not sure what to expect the vet to say.

Bf's cat came in tonight with mouth hanging open, tongue sticking out a bit, blood tinged drool around mouth and chest, putting idly. He tries to paw at his mouth sometimes. It sounds like hes actually clawing his mouth.

Acts like he's hungry but won't eat the food in his bowl. Haven't seen him try to drink so I'm not sure if he can swallow. He was eating and drinking normally as late as this morning.

Yes, he's on his way to the emergency vet now.

Yes, I know this is what happens with outdoor cats. I'm not acting surprised or anything so no preaching please. It's a cat that was feral as an adult for years and has no idea how to cope with being in a house 24/7.

Sounds like a hit by car/potential broken jaw.
>>
First thing I thought was broken jaw. Keep us updated, but yknow yadda yadda outdoor cats

Anyway, regardless of whether your cat is indoor or outdoor, it should be rabies vaccinated. $30/year to protect your animal isn't asking much.

OK thanks for the info. Yeah I've seen wild animals with rabies and noted the lack of muscle control. The cat is just sitting still right now, and he hasn't been aggressive today or before that. I wasn't sure if the slack jaw/inability to swallow can appear before the other symptoms though.
>>
So it looks like everyone was right his jaw is messed up. We will be feeding him with a syringe and giving painkillers over the weekend then see what a dental/orthodontic vet can do for him. Thanks guys

Definitely sounds like the cat got hit by a car or something. Please let us know how he is and update us about his recovery.

And please reconsider allowing him outside unsupervised. It isn't safe. Even if he can't be kept inside all the time, you can take him outside supervised on walks just like you would a dog.

Also, he should be vaccinated against rabies. ESPECIALLY if he's allowed outside on his own, but even if he's kept indoors.

Thanks for your concern. Believe me, we tried for months. It's just not happening. He goes crazy. We are going to look into setting up an electric fence of some kind though, not sure how well that works for cats. And yes we will get his shots current.

Try a fence that is angled inward at the top. Google "cat fencing" to get an idea.
