I have a cute orange cat with megacolon. Over the past year, she's had to get three enemas and takes twice daily doses of cisapride to manage her condition (she can't poop without it). Every few months, she STILL can't poop, and we have to get (another) enema. Which sucks.
Unfortunately, we cannot afford surgery and the risk of failure is too high.
She's stopped defecating again and we don't want to give her yet another enema. Euthanasia is the last thing we want for her, but it's getting hard. I don't know what else we can do?
We're taking her to the vet tomorrow to see if there are any other options.

Do you guys have any suggestions?
>>
>>2421981
How old is kot?

Have you also tried lactulose and laxatone? The veterinary hospital I used to work at gave all three to our clinic cat, who also had megacolon. She also periodically received subcutaneous fluids as needed since dehydration exacerbates constipation.

She's on a wet diet, yes?

"Kot" is 3 years old.
She's been on cisapride, as well as an over the counter stool softener. I haven't tried the l-words, but we also give her prune juice, to help with fluids, too. She has a wet food diet, but also a choice of dry food (we have two cats).
The past week, she's been lethargic, and I think she's stopped eating. Her anus is an inflamed mess, and I feel so bad for her.

Thank you for the advice.
>>
Anon I think your best course of action is euthanasia. It seems like the animal is in a constant state of suffering to some degree. She is a beautiful cat, I'm so very sorry anon.

So young! Poor thing.

I would at least ask about lactulose/laxatone... had a friend with a cat that had chronic constipation, and being on the combo helped her along when the friend was also on the cusp of euthanasia as well. Lactulose is a laxative, and laxatone is a lubricant more commonly used to help with hairballs (but also helps with constipation) - quite palatable, some cats will lick it right off your fingers. Both are much less expensive than cisapride, and laxatone is OTC, available at most pet stores.

I can see you're really trying for your cat. Whatever you decide, know that you've already done more for your cat than a lot of other people would. Hope everything turns out for the best.

Oh no my heart.

During one summer when I was really young and visiting my dad he sat me down outside for a talk. It was really uncomfortable because I was young and dumb and he was acting weird. He told me that my cat was sick, and had to be put down. That really hurt, wouldn't stop crying. My dad bought me another plane ticket so I could see her one more time before she went away.

Also, I have to say, I'm losing sleep over this. Why did we have to kill her? When we took her to the vet, I genuinely expected to bring her home. What if we didn't try enough?
I've read all the messages, saying it was the right thing to do, but why can't I sleep?

Anon, she is such a sweetie and even though I do not know her, I feel a lot of love for her. As someone who suffers from severe IBD without medication, let me tell you when you have gastro-troubles it is agonizingly painful. I have passed out from the pain. Your lovely kitty was going to go through its entire life in similar pain and without any of the comforts us humans have AND without any understanding of why this is happening to her.

There is no good way to euthanize, because that poor thing deserved a long, happy life filled with love and cuddles. But you did your absolute best to give her that and stopped the pain before it could consume her further. Not every life can have a happy ending, but you were able to stop her pain and let her know in her final moments that she was loved so, so much. <3
>>
>>2423099

You're good people, OP. Some would just choose to let her continue suffering for their own selfishness, so as not to lose her, but you didn't hesitate to do what's right for the cat. She would have many, many years of pain ahead of her if yo hadn't.

Had to put my boy of 11 years down the first Wednesday of January this year. Aggressive lung cancer due to second-hand smoke from my moms shitty cigs. He used to run like a little maniac in our back yard, wore a very visible track in the dirt and grass. With him gone and summer in full swing, his little track is almost gone and I feel like crying sometimes still when mowing my back lawn. The pain gets better OP, but it leaves slowly. Sounds like you really loved that little cutie, I'm sory for your loss.
Pic related, my last picture of my boy the day I had to let him have peace.

It never goes away. Eventually you'll come to terms with it and even though you'll always be a little sad thinking about them, the happy memories will be what you remember the most.
You'll remember the sadness sometimes. But, for me at least, the sadness always helps me remember to value the time we have with the ones we love.
Pic related is my cat that died in mid 2012. I can remember the day we lost her so clearly and remembering it is still enough to make me cry if I let it. I'm sorry for your loss, anon. But it gets better.

The smallest things have been setting me off. I saw her rabies vaccination and wanted to cry today.

Maybe I'm stressed from external events right now, too, but I'm finding it hard to see any happiness in the world right now. Hard to see how I can ever be happy, knowing I had to kill my baby.

I was in pretty much the same position. Prolong her life in pain, or let her go gently. I know it doesn't feel like it now, but you did the right thing anon.
Shortly before she got sick, we rescued this little guy orange and white guy as a two month old kitten from a cardboard box on the side of a country road. It was a good thing that happened because , for me at least, having the other cat to take care of made it easier. Pic is from just about a month before she got sick.
