Which extinct species would you like to see brought back? (via cloning)
I reckon we owe it to the Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) to bring it back after we (humans) drove it to extinction. Even the last known individual died due to neglect in 1936.
My most reasonable candidate for de extinction is the dodo. They seem like cool fellas.
Dream animals would be that marine gharial from New Guinea, those terrestrial crocs from Fiji, and the meiolaniane turtles. Throw in megalania while you're at it, it's never happening anyway.
>>2421916
Another candidate is the Moa. It only became extinct in the 1400s and there are lots of surviving remnants (eggs, tissues etc.) . There's probably a more realistic chance of cloning them as opposed to mammoths
>>2421916
yeh dodos sound nice. They sound like animals that humans normally love, it weird that we wiped them out

Since we've had Megatherium already how about Tyto pollens aka The Chickcharney. It was an extremely large flightless barn owl that liked to pop out and spook you.
>>2422599
Dodo's were opposed to many other animals not very smart. Whilst pigeons and any other kind of bird would fly away when a human came close, the Dodo would curiously come towards humans. Thus they were driven to extinction on the spit.
Dinosaurs

So, another vote for dodos

Mammoths ofc. My ancestors came here for the sole purpose of hunting them, I feel I'm warranted to eat at least one mammoth in my life.

You can't really blame them. Dodos didn't have any predators. They had literally no reason to be afraid.
>>2423314
How could something so plump not have predators?

We hunted a bird that wasn't afraid of us but rather attracted to us. Could have been a pet too. FeelsBadMan

islands, my man. There was a native constrictor who sometimes ate hatchlings, but I think that went extinct, too.
Would domestication save animals?
It's so weird to think after thousands of years of working with elephants and cheetahs that they have never been domesticated. It seems like such a waste.
Although there have been domesticated species that have gone extinct.
>>2422820
Sounds sort of like the Striated Caracara. They are a bird from the Falklands. Apparently one of, if not the smartest of the birds of prey, but are known to be almost fearless of humans and can be caught by a net.

Neanderthal compared to an early sapiens sapiens.
I do believe that the collective memory of Neanderthals found its way into various legends and myths, for example as the dwarves in various Nordic sagas.

If it's more than one year, it messes up your crop cycles. Horses can go around that because they can eat stored hay, which elephants dislike.

>>2425498
I agree with you that memory of Neanderthals probably made its way into our legends, but like these anons >>2425567 >>2425579 said, its probably not Norse legends.
Any old story about man-shaped cave-dwelling monsters could have its base in Neanderthals. We'll probably never know how the interactions between our two species actually played out, but it seems pretty likely that it was a millennia-long conflict in Europe as we outcompeted them and pushed them to the fringes of the continent.

the elephant bird and the moa were close to our modern paleognathae, phorusrhacos' nearest living relative is the seriema and the dodo's is the nicobar pigeon. diatryma was related to waterfowl.

Might as well just raise chickens, pragmatically speaking. Except we didn't bring chickens this time, or we want to save them for a while, and these big stupid birds are rubbing up on us, might as well eat them and save the chickens for later.
The sea is vast, there are sure to be more of these fowl somewhere.
