I recently repotted my ricinus. The thing is, it was severely root bound so I made some cuts into the root ball in the process. That was about a week ago and now the edges of the leaves are turning brown. I'm assuming it is a sign of stress or damaged roots. Is this normal and is it likely that my plant will recover? I was told making cuts into the root ball of a root bound plant won't affect it all that much, was I lied to?

Yes, you were lied to. Any root damage can kill plants. Even spreading roots with your hands before transplants usually kills the plant.

The best way to do it is to soak it, extract it and put it in the new pot with no root movement and let it figure out where the new dirt is.

But several websites told me making cuts in the root ball is a good way of handling a rootbound plant. Why would they bullshit like that?

Edges of the leaves turning brown would suggest wind scorch, i.e. a sudden reduction in humidity or a retarded rate of transpiration, Did you move it to a different location after repotting, did you forget to water it in after transplanting? I'd give it a soak and maybe put it in a clear plastic bag to increase humidity.

>Even spreading roots with your hands before transplants usually kills the plant.

Usually? That's a big exaggeration. Whether root damage kills a plant or not comes down to 1. whether the plant has enough food and water stores to recover from the damage and 2. ensuring that the damaged area is in an open textured media to allow good air flow so that the wound can callus without further infection or rotting.

I put it in the exact same place were it stood before repotting. It grew really well there, too. I didn't forget to water it and the humidity has been 50%-70% the last few days, I recon that's sufficient for a ricinus communis. Also I'd like to note that the leaf you see on the picture is the most 'damaged' one, the others aren't quite as bad, but their tips are beginning to turn brown.

Can you talk more about helping plants recover from root damage? I'm almost certain that is the case here as nothing changed in the care of the plant besides me repotting it.

Just give it time mate, the damage isn't severe, just a symptom of stress. Try using a seaweed based fertiliser, a specialised one like rhizotonic is ideal but all are good for root stimulation.

There is very, very little good information about plants at the top of google. I think they're in league with monsanto and want to reduce food production, seeding and bump bad info to kill people's plants.
You'd be fucking shocked at how many people actually spray dish soap at plants to kill aphids because they googled it.

>>2418545
Still the absolute best way to repot is to not move the roots at all.

why do ((((((((they)))))))) have to ruin everything
