There was this one time when only a small portion of wolves wanted to hang out with humans instead of 100% of all wolves what meant that they just agreed to the sure fire extinction of 99.99% of all wolves (the 0.01% being the ones chilling out with homo sapiens).
It's either get the fuvk with us or get the fuck out. And most wolves chose to get the fuck out all those millennia ago.

They are really shitty predators. I imagine they only thrived so well into modern times because they don't have a lot of competition.

Can someone explain why wolves will sneak into enclosures and just fucking wreck 50 sheep for no reason? It obviously can't eat them all, is their brain just dead set on "see prey, kill prey" and they get overwhelmed and fail to realize their behavior is trivial? Newfoundlands, Kangal dogs, Great Danes, Caucasian Shepherds, Tibetan Mastiffs, St Bernards, English Mastiffs, Leonbergers, Bull Mastiffs, Neopolitan Mastiffs, Great Pyrenees, Bully Kutta, Anatolian Shepherds, Boerboel, Akbash dogs, Spanish Mastiffs, Greater Swiss Mountain dogs and Pyrenean Mastiffs all dwarf natural wolves. Very commonly by 30-40 lbs and not even rare for them to be 70+ lbs heavier than a full male grey wolf.

The truly pathetic thing is that even our joke breeds can weigh more.
An American Bulldog can weigh 119-130 pounds on the heavy side as a steroid-freak looking thing.

Even a Giant Schnauzer, the biggest version of those little tiny yappy bastards, can weigh 10 pounds more than a wolf.

The actual huge dogs I mentioned earlier, some of them even bred specifically to kill wolves+bears+leopards and things are far more deadly to a wolf than the wolf is to them.
They can have stronger mouths than wolves while also having far stronger arms and bodies for slamming and pinning, plus we equipped them with gimmicks like thick folds of hair/tough skin that the wolf bites into and it only pisses the dog off, then the dog chews the wolf's neck and gets an artery instead.
A komondor looks like a big white mop and can blend into a sheep herd it's guarding, but if you locked it into a sheep pen with five wolves, it would be the wolves that were the unlucky ones trying desperately to escape.

It's true. This is why most ventures to create 'super-tough primal wolf-dogs' for fighting and guarding have failed, because the flight instinct from the wolf's side is just too strong.

Most present-day wolfdogs are either less than 10% wolf (Czechoslovakian) or naturally timid and cautious (Saarloos)
