On the other hand, it's kinda neat seeing them sprout and grow.

Btw, has anyone grown catnip? Pic related is mine, but it has no flowers yet, and my cat totally ignores it. Is it really catnip or some random herb?

Well, these are not from seeds, but very small divisions I bought online or got from my plants.

Anyway I got seeds from online stores, never buy from chinks.

Your plants aren't happy, buy magnesium sulfate USP, no additives, pure Epsom salt and find instructions on spraying online.

>>2408582
The poster was slacking so I made a substitute sarcastic thread. I have problems. Sorry.

>>2408589
Add Epsom, dried powdered clay, ashes like cigarette ashes or wood ashes, not barbecue ashes, and calcium carbonate or bone meal, that's Tums, be sparing. Treat the soil. The only thing you want directly on the leaves is Epsom/magnesium sulfate dissolved in water.

Yellow spots is magnesium deficiency, so get off brand, no additive pure Epsom salts at the dollar store and hit Google up. I use 2 teaspoons in 30oz of water, mix into purified spring water and spray all my leaves once a month, tomatoes can take an extra spraying as soon as the first flower opens even if it's off schedule.
Reminder: If you use potting soil, check ALL the ingredients because it might have magnesium/sulfur in it already, but if the leaves are yellowing you need to treat the plant. Magnesium/sulfur is what Epsom salts are, but you need calcium too, and drying/grinding bones is not for me so I surprisingly enough use the tums. I only did it with tomatoes, half a tablet of ultra strength off brans calcium carbonate into 16oz water and applied it to those two tomatoes you see, it induced flowering extremely fast, and the plants were lagging on the production. That's good though, we have very tall, strong stems before flowers and fruit set.
They are from Feb 20, in sterile organic soil and treated as they go, it's actually really easy to feed them like this, all your instructions are in this post.

>>2408725
I'm autistic. No one cares.
>>
>>2408591
That catnip looks like mine. My cat loves it. There are cats out there who don't care about catnip though. Or take a while to figure out they can eat it instead of the spiderplant. How did you even get up there, cat, get down from there and leave spidy alone!
>>
>>2408771
>substitute sarcastic thread.
Pretty sure it's the real deal now.
I don't think anybody has the right to complain, it's not like they put any effort in to starting a new general, myself included.
>>
>>2408772
Well the catnip has to flower to produce the odorous compounds that affect cats, and some cats aren't even affected. Why is he trying to drug his animal? You can collect wild catnip very, very easily in some places.

Thank fuck the site is back online. Everything is boring without plant threads.
>>
>>2408775
That effort is reserved for later, I will go screenshot the old thread and maintain it until op comes the fuck back. Must be camping honestly. 40 Hours of autosage and I was so bored I had to get a new thread.
>>
>>2408776
>the catnip has to flower to produce the odorous compounds
That's odd. That's never been the case with any of the catnip at work (plant store with feral cats, we have to crate the nip when it comes in) or mine at home.
>>
>>2408782
At least I think so, leaves are usable but I'm half sure they should be flowering before the plant has any bioavailable compounds. Who knows. It was a shot in the dark.
Maybe his cat just doesn't react to it. I would go hunt more info but if he doesn't have $2 for catnip, I'd say stop wasting time trying to get your cat high. Typical millennial teenager shit, blowing used pot smoke into your cat's face and expecting it to inhale the THC that your lungs didn't take. Which is zero.

Just leave the cat be or buy the catnip, but keep your plant, they're not that ugly. Put an apple slice in the pot and treat with bone meal, if you care, flowering with start in three days after this treatment.
>>
>>2408789
You can make catnip tea, supposed to have a calming effect, but I've never noticed anything.

How a cat reacts to nip seems to vary a lot. I've heard of just laying around but mine likes to run around the house and play with toys he normally ignores. The ones at work destroy nip in the night so I don't much see the effects. Eh, it gives the cat a bit more variety in life.

The flowers are cute.
>>
>>2408800
It's supposed to work like an amphetamine on the cat. Yes, the flowers are pretty nice.

Anything you can deny your cat, deny it. That cat will go from loving you to fucking hating you in seconds. It's shocking and disturbing. You can't spoil them or even try to enrich them. They just turn on you. I woildn't add a drug to this problem.

I've had this cat for years and nothing you say will tear us apart.

Anyways, he, like many cats, knows his limit on the nip. No matter how much he is given, he will stop eating after a little while. Generally nip plants will be destroyed if you have the rare glutton or, most often, if there are multiple cats (like at my work.)
>>
>>2408591
If your cat does not like catnip, there are more herbs that are attractive to cats:
Polemonium reptans
Valeriana officinalis
Teucrium marum
Nepeta faassenii
Nepeta cataria
>>
>>2408817
I just have experience with strays. If you don't let it out, it doesn't turn into a bitch. Male cats don't even do this, unless of course they're let outside. Something about the outdoors changes them.
>>
>>2408818
I might look into these, but plont has pretty much ruined me from ever taking plant suggestions for cats on this board.

I'm reposting my newbie question from the previous thread
How should I go about watering my (potted) plants? google says I should wait for the top inch of soil to get dry, and that I should water until some water drains to the bottom of the pot. Should I follow that guideline?

Reason I'm asking is because my first pot (a mint and a lavender plant, same pot) took almost half a gallon of water right away before I stopped, and even then no water drained at the bottom. Did they really need more?
>>
>>2409009
Looks like a match to me.
>>
>>2409016
>Should I follow that guideline?
Typically yes that's pretty standard advice. Some pots drain off real fast, and this could be a problem for certain plants.
A good rule of thumb is most things in a 10"+ pot should take a full 16oz before they drain out the bottom, if you are pouring in to dry soil.

Question: I have been reading about this drip irrigation systems. I was wondering, how's that most people suggest to water the pots only when the soil is dry at the top, while this plastic bottle system suggests to always have some water?

I tried it, and even with the smaller hole, either the holes got clogged and I had to clean to get water running, or the holes were too big and the bottle got depleted within the hour.

Honestly, I'm not the best person to ask.
Autistic tomato anon could probably help.
TBQH all I do is fill containers with dirt and a plant, and hope for the best. Of course there is much more too it than that, and I do try to figure out what would be best for each situation, but I really don't try that fucking hard because then it would feel like work.
At the moment I'm enjoying my garden, a cold beer, and a shit load of freshly hatched praying mantis.
For what you are growing just keep the soil moist, with lots of eastern sun. Water morning and night as long as it's hot/humid. I understand this doesn't answer your question exactly, but it's the best I can do ATM
>>
>>2409016
It's intuition with no experience required. Keep the top moist but not much more. A 4 gallon pot can take a half gallon to a gallon a day at full size, if they're tomatoes or what not, it depends on the height of the plant. I'd say two cups per foot of plant every morning, if you have drainage, for vegetables. For herbs, one cup a day regardless. I just spray the top of the soil and keep it wet down half an inch for most plants.

>>2408992
They'll take it back out soon I'm sure because it's ugly, or else use it as a support for more bedding.

>>2409078
>holes clogged
Use a toothpick. I wanted to try this with Styrofoam cups but haven't yet. Not sure how it works. Just get a 5g of rainwater. I don't think it's that great a system if you have access to water. Seen some dudes using 5g buckets with holes drilled and burying them 4 inches deep, but honestly just water your plants, this is a vacation tool, not a daily tool.

Stop calling me an autistic tomato, damnit. I only have 280 tomato stalks now.

Im growing a mint plant on my windowcill. Is growing well and I keep it moist and well drained. My worry ia that the tips of the leaves have browned and died. Anyone know the cause of this?
>>

Magnesium deficiency. Use Epsom, 2 teaspoons per spray bottle, and spray it. Could be many things, unless you get a picture I might not accurately diagnose it, but the standard answer to yellowing and browning is magnesium/sulfur.

This is a picture of the leaves. It's around the mid section of the plant. Got it around 2 months ago and it was very small and has grown great but last week this was going on. I moved it from the windowcill into a less intense light about 4 days ago out of worries it was sun burn but the plant has basically turned horizontal and just stretched back for the window. Im not particularly experienced with growing indoor plants at all.

The thing really does smell great though. Really want to make a success of this plant as it's so aromatic. >>2409196

Okay honest answer: depending on climate, instead of cacti can you plant big old berry bushes? Some of them have nasty thorns that could prevent people going near them. Not in a pot that can be moved, but in a contained manner so they don't take over and turn your house into sleeping beauty's castle 2.0. It wouldn't stop someone determined and prepared but like bars on the windows it adds a bit of "hey go away and find somewhere easier."

>>2409346

Tomato autist needs to clam down and people should probably just ignore him until then.

It always amazes me to see how much total nonsense is taken for granted in gardening communities, with no one ever bothering to think "but why". Can't repot anything during its growing season because you'll "disturb the roots" (even though a plant doesn't give a single shit as long as its roots aren't broken)! Can't use any organic medium because it will break down (even though that's the whole point)! Can't water from the top/bottom because whatever! Must use heating pads and terraria and misting systems and the most expensive growing lights you can find! Don't forget to buy twenty different fertilisers!

With just windowsill light, water and a bit of extra food once in a while, you can keep any plant happy.

I don't know anything about hemp in particular, but the oldest leaves dying is nothing to worry about. Most of the times it's just because its roots have filled up the pot (root bound) and the plant can't get any bigger from then on, which means it needs to get rid of older growth to make room for new growth. Your plant looks healthy to me anyway. You could take it out and put some more soil on the bottom of the pot to make more space for roots (considering you planted it pretty deep inside the pot from the looks of it).

Thank you fellas, I watered my plants with that in mind today and it turns out I wasn't very off after all - my herbs took an extra cup of water or so than usual before draining water at the bottom.

Aside from that, and continuing from the previous thread, I followed an online guide to get rid of aphids from my fuchsia plant, made a mix of dishwashing liquid and water and sprayed my plant thoroughly. While it seems to have taken care of the aphid problem for now, it also turned out to be bad for my plant - most of the flowers that I sprayed lost their color after some hours. I guess the dishwashing liquid is toxic for them (and I didn't even put in the 2tbsps the guide suggested!)
Is my fuchsia ruined? I rinsed the plant with plain water a bunch of times since then and I don't think there's any soap left on the plant, but the discolorization remains. Is there anything I can do now to save the existing flowers or at least not ruin my plant? Did I poison it?
>>
>>2409930
Yes, perfume is poison, when you apply it to living things, they die. Glycerin clogs the leaves and blocks sunlight, but the real master at play here is the (ingredients undisclosed, by law) scented whore spray.
>>
>>2409933
goddammit. so how much did I mess my plant up? Anything I can do about it or is it doomed to wilt and die now? And why the heck would someone suggest specifically dishwashing liquid if it kills the plants? I read it in multiple sites too, one said mix 1lt of water with 2tbsp dishwashing liquid, another said 1lt of water with 1tbsp of liquid and 1tsp of cayenne pepper or something along those lines.
>>
>>2409933
Not him but just out of curiosity would homemade castile soap (I don't know if prepared ones have additional ingredients) have the same pesticidal properties while being less toxic to the plant?
>>
>>2409937
>>2409930
Dish soap is a detergent and it dissolve cell walls of things. It kills pests but if you don't wash it off it starts to dissolve your plant!

Make sure to wash off the plant. Dish soap is safe and the scents will not harm your plants.
>>
>>2409937
>>2409963
oh god don't fall for this tinfoil hat wearing, uneducated idiot

soap isn't good for the plant because it is a surfactant, lowering the surface tension of water and enabling the mixing of water and fat/oils, if this gets inside the plant (over the stomata on the underside of leaves) it fucks the plant up

this has nothing to do with any additional ingredients in the soap but the soap itself
>>
>>2409963
Maybe if it killed pests, but lye goes in the soil, not the leaves, I don't know enough about this because I manually pick every insect off hundreds of plants. You have fingers right? Throw away infected plants and start over if you have to.

My next trick is going to be acquiring high grit sand and mulching with it to stop slugs. Hopefully. Will look cool anyways.
>>
>>2409937
>2bsp

Jesus dude. Get a non chemical insecticide if you're not planning on eating your mite covered fuschia. I don't get aphids on anything here.
>>
>>2409963
Castile soap is actually soap, it smothers bugs and if left on smothers plants.

Just wash it off after you use it. No need to worry about toxicity.
>>
>>2409976
and dish soap does not dissolve cell walls

plant cell walls are made of polymeric carbohydrates, which are completely unaffected by dish soap or any other kind of soap
>>
>>2409976
Fragrance: (Ingredients undisclosed, protected by law, unchecked by a lab)

"This can not hurt me, my plants or my family."

What did he mean by this? We're in the US where confusion, seizures and organ damage and are programmed like this.
I don't get it. I'm not a hippy, I'm telling you what the law is.
>>
don't respond and feed this idiot with (you)s
>>
>>2409985
Sure if dish soap was soap and not detergent.

Plant walls are made of lipids and lipids are organized oil molecules. Detergent dissolves oils.
>>
>>2409993
US law states that you do not have to label perfume or flavorings ingredients that would be kept secret by corporations.

The law says that companies do not have to have a product tested before it is put on the shelves.

Procter and Gamble, the originalfags that first fluoridated toothpaste, which we now know is bad, control over 50% of the chemicals and beauty products in your home.
Unilever controls the rest.

So they don't have to tell you what's in it, they produce many tons of waste chemicals per year, and they have to get rid of it.

The government best kept secret is how they actually dispose of harmful waste chemicals. You're eating them and dispersing them.

I'm sick of stupid people and fda shills wandering the board.
>>
>>2409999
no, you're thinking of cell membranes, those are made of lipids

cell walls are not
>>
Thanks for the help guys

>>2409976
I hear ya, I've sprayed plenty of plain water on my plant trying to get rid of the soap and I'm pretty sure I've removed most of it. I'll give it a rest and see how it is tomorrow morning, I'd keep washing it until I was absolutely sure but I don't wanna drown it in water.
What should I do with the discolored flowers & leaves? Should I pinch them off, are they completely dead? Most of the leaves of the plant look healthy, but I'm afraid the vast majority of the flowers have at least some discoloring.

>>2409982
Yeah, I messed up. As I said, this is my first plant and I have zero experience, so spraying a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid on my plant sounded like a good idea.
>>
>>2409570

>>
>>2410041
glyphosate was used for a very long time before some genius decided to make magic seeds that are resilient to it. making it so you really dont know how close to harvest it was sprayed on the crop. Not only is everyone eating a genetically identical crop but one that was sprayed with a pesticide designed to kill everything it touches.

Most pesticides are studied for years and years and their is a study for every new crop they are tried on. I know your fully organic but I think most people are slightly misinformed about that particular situation.
>>
>>2410103
Oh, Sevin. For a second I had no idea tf you were on about.
>>
>>2410115
Good points, I just do everything naturally because I sell the plants and am NOT into hurting people in any way. I'm selling stuff to restaraunts this year, and shit, if I hurt someone in those two restaraunts that exist in 50 miles, my sales are gone.

The main problem here is the sacks of miracle gro. We have our own personal momscientists that defend this, but I have experience using it and it makes shit extremely bitter and disgusting, inedible raw, and increases disease rates by stunting growth.

But they will tell you it doesn't and call you a fucking faggot for attacking their corporation. Any single dude can monitor the entire board all day, I do, and doubting shilling is fucking foolish.
>>
>>2410145
One benefit of miracle gro, it keeps slugs off your plants because they won't crawl across the poisonous dirt.

Pretty damn bad when a slug is disgusted by your nutrients that it was there to collect anyways. Organic dirt is FAR cheaper to produce, $8 for 50lbs, but that chemical laden shit is $13/50lbs.
Why make the wrong choice? Just spend a little time researching what you need to add, and baked clay cakes are really a cureall. Get a lump, rinse it until the dirt is off, press them, bake them and powder them to dust and throw into soil. You can even dissolve it into water and squirt it into the roots. It works. Growth rates double with clay and ash.

My tobacco plants outside are being destroyed by pests I can't identify. I think a chipmunk snapped a stem off, now some bugs are eating away at the leaves when I'm not there.

At least my indoor plants are okay.

>>
only 20$ lads; what a fucking steal
>>
>>2410207
Dilute bleach into water and add some dishsoap and spray it once a day.

Also, cow shit and dog shit is easy to collect and gives your plants nitrogen.

Lysol also has healthy lemon compounds that have ethylene, which when sprayed once a week help your plant accelerate growth.

Also trashcans are the best place to keep them, leave it in the bottom of a trashcan for 7 full days at the side of the street and it's growth will explode. Has to be black, for heat absorption and greenhouse effects. Make sure it's on the front lawn next to your mailbox.
>>
>>2410193

>>

I'm the guy you responded to. I didn't know potato bugs ate tobacco, I'll keep an eye out for them, thanks!

Also I got my seeds from a German vendor (some backyard tobacco enthusiast) online over ebay. It's not hard if you buy online, and once you grow your first plant then you'll never need to buy seeds again. Tobacco plants produce thousands of them, they're really tiny, smaller than poppy seeds.

You'd want to take the flower off of most of your plants though as it wastes energy that could be used towards making bigger leaves.

I have a bunch of these with some pitcher plants around my green house, i thought they would protect my chili crops.

Besides probably attracting a majority of the small flying insects that go crazy for the grow lights, they absolutely murder everything. Roaches, small lizards even, beetles a few pests as well.

They definitely seem to attract more insects than they consume but its still awesome to wake up to a massacre from the night before.
>>
>>2410207
I bought 100 seeds and grew a large crop of these, ended up throwing a lot of them out they took up so much space. i should sell them for ridiculous prices...
>>
>>2410588
this bad boy looks like hes in good soil but is either getting too cold or not enough sun. The traps will die after capturing prey and sometimes if you trigger the traps for fun. Keep it between moist and wet (im sorry thats vague as fuck) when its in full sun and let it dry out to moist at night. keeping a cut off liter bottle (with some holes) over the pot to make a mini green house works a treat here and helps here to keep some of the traps alive if you know its well fed. you can fertilise once a month with some compost, but insects should provide enough nitrogen for this guy to flourish.

>build bird house because girlfriend loves owls
>she paints it bright colours despite this
>haul it up into one of our jacaranda trees with some nesting materials and cloth
>nothing seems to be living in there months later
>one night, she sees rats running in and out among the banches
>the oversized bird house is now a nest of rats
>consider taking it down
>later gets taken over by bees
>girlfriend is heartbroken but I think its a win.

Having a beehive has done wonders during flowering season, Ive basically stopped having to pollinate, although my crops are producing some strange hybrids. Only downside is flowering season the jacaranda makes the garden a purple 'floor is made of bees' death zone.

It's 25-30°C (77-86F) during the day at the moment, sun from 9am till 7pm, I'm keeping it moist-ish, I don't make it snap for giggles, and it's fed regularly. I know about the traps dying from bigger prey, that doesn't bother me, it just seems awfully small. and flat.
Let's just hope it's doing great and that's just the way it is.

i often by lily blooms late in season bc they are clearance. they may came up and die back if it gets too hot before it can establish itself but usually they come back the next spring. but they may come up and stay green and not bloom, many different possibilities. i would plant them where the pack says and if you have a scorching hot day put some shade on them. or put them in a basement and wait till next year. or if they say late summer blooming your fine. look for bulbs that say late blooming if your looking to buy bulbs now

Just started out a month or so ago, all seeds germinated and some are on to their third true leaf already so it's off to a good start at least. The dewdrops even on the tiny seedlings growing on a windowsill with low humidity are already the same size as the drops on my rotundifolia growing outside in ideal conditions and twice the size of other indoor dews. Doesn't seem like it's very hard to grow them though, they just need to eat more than others. I got an adelae as a back up plan either way as they look pretty similar.

Stunted plant growth
Weak stems
Plant needs covered over 5mph winds
Tastier to pests, except slugs
Attracts flies
Fruit grows too fast and splits, letting bugs in
Extremely shallow root system, even with 2 foot deep tilling
Susceptibility to disease increases tenfold
Nutrient demands are extremely high, requiring more miracle group treatment
Extremely common magnesium deficiencies
20 Day old plants producing fruit
Worm infestations
Root eating insect infestations
Fruit rotting on the plant
Extremely slow ripening
Bitter, soapy taste in produce, like chemicals
Plant can't support itself or it's fruit

Use organic dirt.
>>
>>2414212
cool thanks anon
>>
>>2414214
For potted shit, organic, 7.5gal pot:
Dig dirt from under a pine tree, including 15-20% dead needles so it doesn't turn to mud.
Finely chop it up, pick any bugs out you see and dry it in the sun for 5 days to destroy remaining moisture dependant bugs and evacuate any earwigs.
Dig up a pound or two of clay, put it on a piece of foil or something and bake it overnight. Powder it to dust and mix it in sparingly, 5% of the total dirt.
Next collect ashes, if you smoke this is easy. Do not use charcoal starter soaked ashes or unsoaked charcoal that you sprayed starter on. Wood ashes are fine, but way stronger than cigarette ash. Pulverize them until you have 1/4 cup wood ash or 1/4 cup cigarette/cigar ash. Add it.
Also add some fine gravel or round pebbles and mix it in because this shit can turn to mud and hold too much water.
Lastly, I didn't have to do this, but you can mix epsom salts into the soil. I just treat plants later with it. It's considered organic.

There are many ways to do this but it seems to work better if your soil isn't baked, and all bagged dirt is. I don't use feces, and used to use dead wintered leaves but the results are horrifying disease and insect wise.

Alternatively, get a trowel and dig a hole in the yard, put a pill bug shield up, put a deer cage up, and hope for the best.
>>
>>2414194
Put it outside, in full sun for at least 4 hours
Water with distilled or rain water, put a tray under the pot, let the substrate almost dry out before watering again, but don't let it go completely dry
Respect its dormancy periods
Use non calcified, non fertilized peat moss, dry sphagnum or live sphagnum as a substrate
Never never ever fertilize it

I'm fine with carnivorous plants, why wouldn't I be. It's just that people talking like that looks funny, especially on 4chan. I don't think they deserve a ban or anything.

It's not really too big. Only about 6 inches across which puts it firmly in the small category. The pic shows a few more medium sized plants, which are around 2 feet across or more. Big plants are the same diameter but several feet tall. Keeping them alive is pretty easy. They're divided into two groups, ones that need a cool night to live and those that need warm temperatures constantly. In most of the US the first kind is the easiest to keep as long as you stick to common species. The rest of the care is simple stuff; water on a schedule similar to orchids, use distilled water, provide lots of light, and feed often to speed up growth. I don't use a terrarium, just a wire rack to hold my lights. My humidity stays between 30-60% which is fine for most species.

Is that a Miranda I see? Nice, that's the one I've got. The main reason why I'm planning on building a terrarium is the humidity. I thought these plants needed 70%+ to thrive/pitcher. If your plants are pitchering at <60% I might not need a terrarium after all

Its a maxima actually, but they do have similar looking leaves. Terrariums are more trouble than they're worth in my experience. It opens you up to air circulation and mold issues. With some time to adjust most neps will be happy with household conditions.
