I take my hisser(s) out for walks sometimes. I think it's like enrichment for them. Usually I have them in a carrier, but sometimes if it's just 1 they'll hide in my clothes and poke their little head out sometimes to see what's going on. I don't do it often at all, maybe like once a month or so for fear of overstimulating them.
>>
>>2407396
I might try it in that case. I have a huge tub filled with them. Use them as feed for all my ant colonies. Was using Dubias and Porcelain roaches before hand.

The Porcelain, very beautiful to keep and look great in a set up tank full of dirt and moss with wood etc... People who would say they hated cockroaches always loved them. The down side with them is they're skinny, good climbers and can fly.

Dubia's were good but went out of stock and I had depleted mine. As a consolation was sent hissers instead and they do great for ants. They're much larger so 1 bull will quite easily feed a week meaning my stock stays pretty level.

From a buzzfeed article titled "how to teach your hamster to snuggle"
>>
>>2407926
People wonder why hamsters are so "evil" and "bitey" when they stuff them into something the size of a burrow.

They're protecting their burrow because they have no fucking space. They think the entire thing is their private den and you are coming into it like a predator, waking them up in the middle of the day when they're dead asleep, grabbing them with your hands that are as big as their bodies. Fucking hell this is common sense. I wish it were illegal to sell these meme "good animals for kids for little cost" with no info on a good enclosure and what they need but the animals are cheap and demand is high so of course that will never happen.

Yeah but they shouldn't even sell those cages in the first place. Same with shitty "betta tanks" that are just not suitable. There must be demand because the companies are paying for shelf space but WHO the fuck keeps buying this garbage? In this day and age, where google is accessible to everyone and all you have to do if you actually care about the animal is google "care for __",
>>
>>2407960
It doesn't even make sense because they cost more or cost the same as an actual nice fishtank. Where is the advantage in making & selling these things?
>>
>>2407965
It baffles me as a pet store employee. Shelf costs are high. Fortunately at my particular location we very rarely sell these shitty things, and are able to convince most people to get a real tank instead, but still? Why are they still on our shelves? Who's still buying this tacky crap?
>>
>>2407960
Truth, but sometimes the carriers are expected to be there because live mouse feeders and reptile owners have to have space to keep bugs and such. Which I don't support. I'm one of those guys that makes cardboard playgrounds for my mice with plastic bottle slides and tunnels and fun shit. It's extremely tedious, but enrichment is necessary or rodents will start fucking with their owners and being assholes and pissing on the bars, ruining your table. Oh and of course, throwing turds. Fuck wire cages sometimes.

What is fucked up is the pictures of rats, mice, gerbils and hamsters on the label. Same with food that they shouldn't eat, like alfalfa weighted mixes. Fucking dumb. Picking out alfalfa is SHIT.

That doesn't mean you should do it. The only thing they feel is their gills burning away from ammonia. No fish is good for people who don't want to totally commit. If you can't commit to any animal then don't get one. It's simple. These idiots think doing a weekly water change and adding a little bit of water conditioner is rocket science.
>>
>>2407666
Many frogs die from this process and the ones who do make it have weakened immune systems.
>>
>>2407983
Why don't people just buy distilled water and not put chemicals in it for these fish?

It's $1. No bully if I'm wrong here, but I don't think chemicals are needed unless a waterborne issue comes from tank inserts.
>>
>>2407987
Small tanks that would be fine or topping off. But when you get larger than 10 gallons I don't think it's worth it. Seachem prime is good though and disappears in 24 hours. I wouldn't do it but you could dump a whole bottle in a tank and nothing would go wrong.
>>
>>2407990
$10? Why can't people pay that and use a good filter, oxygen tubes and siphons? It would be like $1 per water change, too much for a swamp fish?
>>
>>2407993
Really depends on the ph of the distilled water. Prime also converts ammonia into ammonium which is much less toxic to fish.

see, you're smarter than /an/ already. You have nothing to learn here.

Prime reduces dissolved O2. Dosing the entire bottle to the tank can suffocate fish. It's otherwise nontoxic.

>>2408158

>>2408184

>>
>>2408164
It's 100% water with nothing in it to change the Ph.

>>2408170
>One test of walmarts distilled water reveals 5.5ph while Costco was 6.5ph.
Then it's improperly distilled. Water has a Ph of 7 and it only changes when things are dissolved into it.
>>
>>2408187
>So when I 10x dosed my fry tank in an emergency why didn't they all die?
probably because your fry consume very little oxygen, 10x wasn't sufficient to deplete the oxygen, the tank was otherwise aerated, or the tank volume was large enough to compensate.

>Also are you forgetting about tank aeration? Filters? Air pumps? Plants?
no. are you assuming I am?

I said the product depletes O2 and can cause suffocation. I didn't say you couldn't add more O2 to the tank. That's your business not mine.
>>
>>2408188
>Water has a Ph of 7 and it only changes when things are dissolved into it.
CO2 gets dissolved in it.

distilled water exposed to room air has a pH of about 5.8.

there is no variation though. Water distilled in vacuum is always 7 and water otherwise distilled is always 5.8.

>It's $1. No bully if I'm wrong here, but I don't think chemicals are needed unless a waterborne issue comes from tank inserts.
Wow. From this simple question I read at the end of work until I got home after going to the gym, /aq/ just blew the fuck up. 1000/10 masterful bait even if you didn't mean to.

Also, pre-bought water is always more expensive. I bought some conditioner off of Amazon for slightly less than $8 for 16 oz, and it will treat 9,600 gallons, and I don't have to fuck around with buying water every time I want to do a change.

This is for freshwater though. Things change for saltwater as not everyone wants to invest in an RO/DI unit (if that type of water quality is needed) and the water change amount is generally far lower.

But yeah, even beyond the whole distilled water debate, you can certainly buy water for fish. Petco/Petsmart sells it. Never looked into it if it's just distilled or tap that was treated or they actually put some effort into it and put trace elements in it for plants or whatever. Regardless of what they did, it's still unnecessarily more expensive and less convenient than a good old bottle of water conditioner.
>>
>>2408242
>pre-bought
Yeah I'm still tired as fuck. I mean pre-treated water.

It's most commonly found in the betta section of Petco/Petsmart. Some of the bigger stores may have the water in "bulk" of 5-10 gallons, which really is nothing as I would use it up in a single water change and that's annoying as fuck to buy and bring home every time.
>>
>>2408223
what do you want elaboration on?

the pH of pure water is 7. Not because of magic but because the pH scale is calibrated off of the pH of pure water. After exposure to air, pure water picks up gaseous pollutants including things like oxygen, ozone, carbon dioxide, methane, etc. These pollutants, primarily carbon dioxide, cause the water to become mildly acidic. Since no buffers are present to reduce acidity, it settles at a pH dictated by the ratios of gasses in the atmosphere. These ratios are almost perfectly constant so distilled water will have exactly the same pH anywhere.

Distilled water kills most organisms, not just because it lacks critical minerals and micronutrients for life, but because it can actually leach minerals out of the body. It's hungry for buffers, minerals.

I can't elaborate on Prime's consumption of oxygen except to say it uses the same process as every other brand of ammonia neutralizer and all of them consume oxygen in the transformation.

If I were to have let's say a 10gal tank for a betta, with a hypothetically optimal filter, how often would I need to change the water?

I rescued a betta off craigslist last weekend. I can tell he used to be pretty but he appears to have serious swim bladder disorder. However my bettas in the past that have gotten SBD have sank to the bottom or always floated, this guy goes up and down. Could it be something else? I don't think it is constipation because he is bloated up huge, the scales around the bloat look like in dropsy when they come apart from the body. But he doesn't have dropsy.

Should i bother with melafix or anything?
>>
>>2408255
The filter, if it is a traditional filter (sponge, HOB, etc), is not a factor in water changing in established (cycled) tanks.

The purpose of the water change is for the nitrate, which a regular biofilter does not do anything about.

There are certain kinds of filters that do deal with nitrate, but they also have downsides, usually maintenance or cost. Look up a scrubber filter if you are interested. They're pretty interesting but I don't want to deal with that shit.

A traditional biofilter gets rid of debris (mechanical filtration) and most importantly ammonia and nitrite (by turning ammonia in to nitrite, then nitrite into nitrate).

Plants will also help get rid of ammonia/nitrite/nitrate, so a heavily planted, low stocked aquarium could potentially not need water changes ever (although evaporation is still a thing, and you should probably check up on trace element buildup).

But anyway, in a traditional 10g aquarium with no live plants and just a single betta that is not overfed, water changes would likely go for well over a month inbetween. Hard to say but you could certainly test it.

>A traditional biofilter gets rid of debris (mechanical filtration) and most importantly ammonia and nitrite (by turning ammonia in to nitrite, then nitrite into nitrate).
Jesusfuck I am retarded at typing tonight.

A traditional filter gets rid of debris (mechanical), and most importantly ammonia/nitrite (bio).

Other parts of the traditional filter are not very important. Third most common component is carbon (chemical filter), which is pretty much a scam for filter companies to have regular ongoing business. Regular water changes and water conditioner is faster and more effective at practically everything a carbon filter does.

Wet/dry is another fairly common component that just helps with aeration. This is usually not a big deal, and can be supplemented with just a simple airstone + air pump anyway if you really needed (and it is obviously completely redundant with something like a sponge filter).

>In this day and age, where google is accessible to everyone and all you have to do if you actually care about the animal is google "care for __",

This is my exact rant, always. The answer I've come to after working at a pet store for over a year? People literally DO NOT give a FUCK.

People, normies specifically, are immature little babbies when it comes to animals, in waaay more ways then one. I could go on for hours about all that, though. In this situation, they just want a pretty fish because it's "cool" and "quirky". I mean, just look through the betta or pet fish hashtag on Instagram. You'll find numerous posts of le quirky college girls and young mothers posting pics of their betta in Mason jars and bowls, the caption usually being something along the lines of "I welcome Sir William Fishertard III to the family!!!1!1!!!one".

I swear to god they have a copypasta for this shit.

At any rate, it's a cultural convention that fish can live in bowls fine, and they take it at face value for 2 reasons: they simply do not care, and because they are so far removed from the true petkeeping hobby that it's beyond their mental capacity to think that anybody would take the time to write about the care for the animal. Even though the worldwide source of endless information is right at their fingertips, a mix of ignorance and frankly not giving a shit keeps them from accessing it.
>>
>>2408546
All the betta keepers I know treat them as disposable accessories to their containers. Which makes sense I guess. The fish costs about as much money as their husband makes per minute.

I sort of agree, I occasionally use them as feeder fish when I feel like irritating betta owners.

Distilled water doesn't have the minerals that most fish need to stay healthy. For fish adapted to very soft water it's fine, but others will develop anemic symptoms.
>>
>>2408574
succinct and entirely correct.

distilled water is fine for topping evaporation, but deadly for water changes or filling a tank.
>>
>>2408129
Also water with no alkalinity will swing in pH very easily, making it difficult to keep the parameters stable.

>>2408150
>>2408203
Thermal distillation alone won't produce 100% pure water 100% of the time, and ambient gases will dissolve into distilled water pretty easily. Besides, it's not like the distilled water you buy from a store is going to be made to super high lab standards, and there is little to no systematic regulation on any kind of bottled water.

>>2408170
Amquel is a dechlorinator that reduces O2 when used. The label reads the same as that on Prime, so people assume Prime works the same way. AFAIK there's no official statement from Seachem on whether or not this is true.

>>2408178
It says something like "up to 5 times the regular dosage amount can be used safely." It doesn't say anything about what happens if you use more than that.
>>
>>2408579
>AFAIK there's no official statement from Seachem on whether or not this is true
this is correct.

however Seachem HAS made statements regarding their ingredients that indicate the same process is used but with a slightly different (proprietary) formula.

based on the company's statements, the same reaction occurs as in Amquel+ and Excel, both of which warn of reduced oxygen.

>I always felt it was more like expecting someone who builds houses for a living to know how to build to suit the occupant.

Or at least build the home to be livable for more than just the walk-through. Their reputation is that it's their designs and equipment, not even the inexperience of the owners or the rushed over-stocking, that are actively dangerous to the animals. The gumball machine tank had to be dismantled pretty well immediately because its insufficient cooling system killed the inhabitants, for example, and the skateboard ramp's fish were all dead within 48 hours thanks to hazardous decorations.

And for guys who are supposedly trying to educate themselves and the audience about fish care, their massive death rate is largely due to them flagrantly ignoring basic requirements that could be found by a quick google search. Here they are putting a whole bunch of "fish that have shark names" into a tank made out of a TV. The bala sharks alone should grow to the length of what's clearly not there to just be a transition tank, but of course they won't survive that long.
https://youtu.be/qqgUcVZxZ9E?t=74

The show has nothing to do with education. It's just a cash grab that encourages the idea that fish are disposable decorations. Everyone involved with Tanked deserve every bit of the hate they get, including Animal Planet for giving this shit 11 seasons and counting.

Ignorance, plain and simple. Like the fact that most people aren't even aware that koi, goldfish, and wild carp are all so closely related to each other that they can interbreed. Not only that, but their offspring are genetically fertile. I shit you not, goldfish/koi hybrids exist. It's the fish equivalent of a pomeranian and a great dane successfully mating and producing a litter of pups.

Like 5 gallon minimum if you're going natural planted, maybe down to 2.5 for silk.

Smaller hygrophilia and anubias are good. Bettas like to rest on leaves, so you want ones that are about fish size at different heights.

There is no way you can look at a shitty little garbage tank or other such thing for small animals and possibly think it's comfortable or happy in there.

The only real benefit I could see to a vertical > horizontal space is maybe it would create more divided territory? Like the fish sitting at the bottom here is going to rarely at best interact with the fish on the opposite end. But even then, solutions would probably be just as readily created and probably more easily maintained in a strictly horizontal space.

All the other crap I can understand people getting away with it. The average person isn't going to know better and thus not report it for animal abuse.

But this shit? How? Just fucking how? Those are god damn TURTLES. Even a literal retard would know that this is sick twisted sadistic abuse.

It's a pacu, and yes it's real.
You can find them sold in fish stores when they're about the size of a tetra and then they grow huge as fuck.

One of those species of fish that shouldn't be sold in stores but dumbasses buy them because "look how cool/cute and small it is!" and ends up growing bigger than their face in a vert short amount of time. (Doesn't help that young pacus look like piranha and people think piranhas are cool, edgy, flesh eating fish that they must have)

Vertical tanks are great for communities with different species of fish occupying different levels of the tank i.e. stocking your tank with topwater fish like rainbows or something or corydoras on the bottom and whatever for mid water like tetras or something.

Every betta I've ever had has died, and I'm not a dumbass about pets. I've kept my caique healthy for 15 years and counting.

Face it, bettas are like like flowers. They exist to look pretty in a vase for a wedding reception and then handed out as party favors or disposed of.

Every living thing ever will die, no matter what.

Seriously though bettas are so fucking bottlenecked and inbred that you're pretty likely to just get one with shit genes. They're also shipped in bumpy-ass trucks in tiny containers and kept on store shelves fermenting in their own shit for god knows how long before you ever even have a chance to see them.
They're still live animals who deserve proper care, and are remarkably intelligent and interactive when they're healthy. You aren't edgy or cool for prioritizing certain animals, and you aren't good at anything just because you managed to not fuck up a parrot.

Only if the tank is also an appropriate size in terms of footprint and is stocked correctly. A 37 gallon is "TWICE AS BIG" as a 20 long, but it doesn't really give more usable swimming space.

Another big problem with tall tanks is that you have to take extra measures to ensure there's enough circulation near the bottom of the tank to keep the water well oxygenated and prevent bacterial and fungal blooms.

Another problem with tall tanks is that bottom dwelling species who like to come up to the surface to breathe air occasionally (cories, notably) have a much longer trip than they would in a shorter tank, which can be even more of a problem if they have to come up to the surface more frequently because you aren't providing extra circulation.

Have any links or resources so I can varify your facts? I've personally seen the gumb ball tank and all of the fish were alive and well. A place like that would have a special guy come to maintain the water quality and fish so I call bullshit on you.

/an/ is now a cesspool of autists and vegans who have insanely retarded standards on what animals should be kept in.
>>
>>2411231

How long ago did you see it? I can't find any pictures of the tank that didn't come from the TV show's reveal segment, and the restaurant itself has been closed for about 6 months so it couldn't have been too recently.

The anon you're responding to, I quoted three different posts. Out of all three, only one post had a human in the image. The other two had no humans in them at all, of any ethnicity. And the one that did has the human in the background, thus blurred to the point that any sane person doesn't even notice their ethnicity, only the sheer fucking horror of them imprisoning a living creature inside of a fucking ornament.

So no, you are wrong. There's nothing racist about being physically repulsed by animal abuse.
