They can be "violent" if you fuckup too much or specifically train them to be, but as soon as they get into trouble they'll run away instead of actually fighting.
I had a golden who had a lot of trouble with other dogs and would snap at anything that bothered her for too long if it was younger than her for some reason.
Other than that all other goldens I met or owned have been pure lovable creatures who like to play and wag their tails at anything that moves.
Some might bark at intruders when they see them but as soon as they are inside your property they will turn friendly.

My neighbours used to have a Golden Retriever. I used to walk it and their Labrador some weekdays, to prove to myself that I could keep up with the exercise required when you've got a large dog.

Both dogs were sweet old things, and I used to meander up the end of beach where dogs are allowed off leash. They never caused any trouble with other dogs -- with one exception.

The Golden Retriever hated German Shepherds with all his soul. I had to leash him up quick if I saw one coming because for all that he was 12 years old and a bit overweight and generally completely placid, he turned into a snarling, lunging rage machine if a GSD came too close.

He died aged 13.

It's weird, though, because since I got my GSD I've noticed that a large percentage of any altercation I have to pull him out of is started by a Golden Retriever.

Goldens are sweet dogs, but they fight dirty and vicious. I've seen a lot of dog fights, and if a golden was fighting, the golden started it.

I work at a kennel, and the dog named molly was an absolute shithead. she was semi aggressive to people but absolutely hated any and every other dog. we had to walk her in and out of the kennels because she would fence fight a lot

The devotion of a German Shepherd. I've never heard/seen a Golden put itself in danger to protect it's person. Pretty much the norm for shepherds.
