I think birds are cool but are there birds that don't sing in the middle of a night like my mom's friend's canary I was babysitting for two weeks once?
>>
>>2405214
They should be pretty quiet at night. Was the cage covered at night?
>>
Why do some birds walk around with their mouths open? Is that how they perspire?

That's actually it. They don't sweat and instead have to pant like dogs. The excessive heat could be caused just by the environment, excessive exercise, or by being too frightened (which is why it's also said that panting is a sign of stress).

Do we know the exact dino that was a direct descendant of all modern birds, like how chimps are our direct ancestors? There were actually some ancestors of modern chickens and ducks waddling around at the same time as rexes, and T. rex was one of the literal very last dinos when that asteroid hit, so they left no direct descendants.

Hey guys, my AC is out and I'm worried about my conure overheating while I'm at work since he's used to AC. I put out a fan on a rotate so it doesn't keep blowing in the same spot. Do you think that this distance is safe? Any advice is appreciated!

>>
>>2405934
It can over cool some animals, even you, be careful and get an ice pack to set on a plate (condensation catch) inside the cage.

This is not as hard to deal with as you think. Also put the fan on standstill and blow through one corner of the cage so he can get into and out of the air, works well and since he can leave he won't get frozen.

idk, I thought i was bc of their reflection, but my neighbors have the same type of windows and it doesnt happen there.
Also, been living here my whole life, but its only been happening for the last 3 or so years...

Thought it was hormones or something bcause of the poop they leave behind, so washed the windows, but its still happening.

I dont feed them either.
And they range from tiny 2 inch birbs, to huge hawks and parrots.
>>
Hello /birb/,
I live in a shitty apartment which has cute pigeons that like to visit and sit on my windowsill and watch me. I feed them oats sometimes, and it's almost always a mating pair (though sometimes two mating pairs will come and two birds - presumably the males? - will fight each other for the territory, and if I'm lucky an old mating pair will bring one of their offspring).

It's given me a really cool insight into pigeon behaviour. In fact, they're outside right now, and they keep having sex.
But before one mounts the other, they do this weird thing where they open their beaks and, it looks like, try to bite each other's tongues.

Why do they do this? They obviously like it. Is it just bird foreplay?

it's been 6 months. He can go outside of the cage, but only around his cage. He refuses to go anywhere else. The only time I took him out forcibly was when we went to the vet. The avian vet said he was healthy.

My issue is that he's afraid of new things. Anything, even the things he see in view, when I put it near his cage, he freaks out.

He steps on my hand, but if I touch him he pecks me lightly.
Also if I move my hand out of the cage, he immediately goes back inside the cage.

What should I do? I want to build an actual relationship with him.

What kind of birds are these?

I changed the seed in my feeder recently and now they show up all the time. I used to only get little yellow and green finches, but now these fellas are showing up constantly. I was worried they'd spook the little guys but I get a steady stream of both.

Are they some kind of dove?

Mourning doves. They make a weird coo that sounds like a higher pitched owl. Relatively peaceful birds but their numbers and size can sometimes spook smaller birds.

Hey Faggots,
My name is John, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are fat, retarded, no-lifes who spend every second of their day looking at stupid ass pictures. You are everything bad in the world. Honestly, have any of you ever gotten any bread? I mean, I guess it’s fun making fun of birds because of your own insecurities, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than jerking off to pictures on facebook.
Don’t be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I’m pretty much perfect. I was captain of the flock, and starter on roost. What sports do you play, other than “jack off to naked drawn mammals”? I also get straight A’s, and have a banging hot girlfriend (She just preened me; Shit was SO cash). You are all faggots who should just kill yourselves. Thanks for listening.

I do this and now have 20 cardinals and 40 finches around in 3 days, they have completely eradicated my slug problems in this time, very useful.

They get on the porch and toss cat food everywhere when they run out of crackers and seeds, really annoying, attracts ants.
>>
Do you continue feeding birds in winter? I was told not to add a bird feeder if I don't keep I going in the winter because the sudden drop in food during the hard months will kill a lot of birds
>>
>>2410552
>the sudden drop in food during the hard months will kill a lot of birds

Not true. Unless there's some sort of famine going on, your feeder isn't the sole food source for all the birds that come to it. They come to the feeder for a quick fill-up but spend most of their time looking for food elsewhere. It's like bird fast food--nice, but not necessary.

The reason to keep feeders up year-round is because it's nice having birds in your yard.
>>
>>2410642
I scatter feed, I have no desire to have 20 cardinals pecking 40 finches all day to get food from a tacky fucking red plastic hangup full of expensive seed with fillers.

Give them sunflower seeds, like David's, not black oil seeds. They don't give a shit about the salt, they can open the seeds. Do not feed pre-husked seeds or they will fuck with you more often because they eat them faster and don't have to work.

Pretty much throw unenriched crackers and plain seeds in the yard so you don't poison them with our "nutritious!" waste chemicals.

Just found this bugger in my back yard in the apple tree. Has to be someone's pet. Never seen a wild parrot here in South carolina. Flew up on my shoulder too so it's familiar with humans. Walked around the community for a bit to see if anybody lost it but nobody claimed it. Went to the local pet store and put up a thing on their lost pets bulletin board. Never had to care for a birb before. Only reason I brought it in is because there's a hawk that roams the sky out back. Got some food and am just letting it fly around the house for now till someone calls.
>>
>>2410664
You may need to get a bird cage or bring it somewhere, there's a good chance no one will claim it today. CHeck CL for lost birds too. If you can't keep it find a shelter or rescue that will take birds

It's a qt bird
>>
>>2410545
That's nice, my grandma used to have a cardinal when I was a kid, I have never seen them in the wild, though.

I leave a little tub with bird food on one of my windows (which I refill twice a day) and I get tons of house sparrows, and some doves. They're really cute.

Is it bad that I leave them water in a plastic container? It gets hit by the sun in the morning.
>>
I think somebody killed one of the doves that came to my house... ;-;

It was outside and it had blood on its beak.
>>
>>2410833
BPA free. The main cardinal actually just listened to me pointing to where I put the food, too windy to put cracker dust on the wood railing today and he frequently comes to ask where it is.

I think I fucked up because the finches whine and whine until they get food. The male cardinal just walks up and look at me until I give him the thumbs up meaning I am going to get it, he also took to the sign 0 meaning no food right now. This is pretty shocking. Only been four days, however I'm outside 15 hours a day. Surely he'll be a friend before two weeks are over. They interpret english through repetition extremely fast.
>>
>>2405696

Down the line we split from chimps but they pretty much stayed the same while we went through even more evolutionary steps and offshoots, who we prob killed at the end... cough
>>
>>2410849

Yeah, that's the plan. Haven't seen anything on Craigslist but I'm going to keep checking. Probably going to hang onto it for about a week, see if anybody calls. If not I'm going to try and find a shelter or rescue. I'd like to keep it but the dogs I have aren't the best with other animals. He's hanging out in the spare bedroom for now. It's a shame, I really like its colors. One of my friends told me the breed. Blue quaker parrot I think? I have no idea if it's a male or female though.
>>
Hey /an/, rarely post here.

I had a baby budgie a few years ago from a neighbor who didn't realize that she had gotten a female companion for her male budgie. I must've gotten incredibly lucky with him because he was as friendly as a loyal hound. He'd fly to me when I'd come home, he'd sit on my chest and nap when I'd watch a movie, he'd even fly into poker games and steal chips from me. You get the idea. Unfortunately due to an accident totally out of my control, he got killed while I was away. I didn't even get to say good morning or goodbye.

A couple years after that I decided to get another budgie. I got him from a breeder and he's just been...okay. He's finger tame, but not very sociable and incredibly skittish. He never leaves sight of his cage. He'd rather play with his bells or objects around the house than interact with anybody and when he does fly over to say hi it's either very brief or only to eat some of what you're eating. Then he's back off to doing whatever else.

It's really disheartening, /an/. He's 3 years old now and it's harder to break habits and train older budgies but I've got to do something. Is it just his nature and should I accept that?

Monk Parakeet. There are feral populations in the US, but that's a captive bird. Note the abnormal colouring. They usually look like the above. They're also called Quaker Parrots.

>>2411058
They can't be kept in cages, will steal/destroy your things, keep you up at night and require a shit ton of attention. If you want to be friends with them, put peanuts in your backyard/a park regularly and soon whatever eats them (crows or jays) will be comfortable around you and you can hand-feed them.

To start, I'll be leaving it outside in a shoebox (can't let it fall to ground level, my wiener dog would eat it) with the food, should the parents be around.

hello /birb/ today i found a jung bird(blackbird?) and i have read that the parents care for them.so i let it where it was, i just checket if it was bleeding (liftet it with gloves on) on a tree i also saw an adult blackbird watching me so i asumed it is its mother.
3h after that i looked and it was still sitting there.now i thought about feeding him a little bit, went online checking what i could feed i read about insects like flies, crickets or worms.
then i looked for the bird again and it was dead.
was it wrong what i have done, what should i do next time?

That's terrible to hear anon, fortunately mine ( >>2412473 ) is still well.

Bought some bird kibble for insectivorous birds btw, some live maggots too.

I've gotthe material, but I can't get it to eat. It sometimes opens up its mouth like it wants to be fed, but it just won't keep it open and let me feed it. It HAS eaten a couple times like "biting" the food out of my fingertip, maybe I should use toothpicks and make the food into little, smoshy balls or something?

I could also smash or shred the maggots and feed him through a syringe. I'm open for ideas really.

Fortunately the parents seem to still be around, I placed the shoebox-nest on a shady, elevated corner near where I found it, left it alone a few hours.

When I came back, there was fresh shit on the flaps of the box, indicating a bird had perched on the edge. It could not be the baby because its too tall a box for its size. Later I also found a small insect's leg (cricket, maybe roach) laying on the paper sheets, indicating there had been yet another visit with food. I've also spotted a blackbird/s(?) several times around the area, the last time it was carrying an insect on its beak.

So yeah, its going well, but I'm worried the parents may give up on it, and the area I left it at would be easy to reach by a daring enough cat. Hell, even I've got a cat. Thankfully he's old as shit so its not too bad.

I just hope he's fine in the morning, i thought of taking him in for the night but his parents may really give up on him if he was gone for the whole night, and I can't risk that. Not when it won't let me feed it.

I don't know wether to try and get it accostumed to me so I can nurture him safely for the 1 and a half month or so it'll still need to develop or try to be as hands-off as possible. Maybe a compromise is possible?

I'm definitely checking up on him tomorrow though. Hang on, lil' guy.

Hello birbfriends. There is a sparrow's nest right outside my house. It used to be well populated before. Yesterday while going outside I must've come too close, since they started screaming like mad and two of the sparrows (the parents, I guess) kinda "fake-attacked" me until I quickly went away. Since about 1 hour after that, the nest has been completely empty. C-could this be m-my fault?

Sadly no.
And convergent evolution is a thing so developement of birds may have started with multiple dino species.

What you should look into is the developement of feathers and fur.

Mamals are actually an older group compared to birds.

Why did they develop the fur and feathers?

Most probably a cold era in earths history.

So considering that T-Rex lived in North America that was switching of and on between British rainy weather and Syberian cold it's fairly probale that they had at least some down but that didn't cover their whole bodies.

Their legs and claws were probably still scaly.

A fluffy T-rex is even more terrifiyng.

Behavior and body language are really important. A happy bird will chatter and sing, hop around or preen themselves. A bird that trusts you will let you see them drink and fall asleep. Budgies, especially my boy Roger, loves to nibble fingers and toes. Not hard enough to hurt, but you know he's there.

Give him a bath, as far as I know cockatiels are more resistant than other birds to them
Try offering a tupperware of water or something for him to jump in and bathe himself with
If that doesn't work, try a mister (I found a great one at a Dollar General of all places, little water bottle you pump up to build pressure then can spray a light mist with)
If neither of those work, try putting a washcloth spread across the bottom of a sink, leave the tap on low, and see if he'll bathe in that
If none of those work just do like me and get a suction-cup perch for in the shower, put it out of the flow of water, and shower with your bird. Either splash water on them with your hands or let water run down your arm onto them

I'll bring him in the shower ever 2-3 days and while he isn't always too keen on baths he tolerates being in there with me. Usually once every 10-14 days he'll decide he's ok with having a bath, but just being in there with me will always get him a little damp so he'll preen afterwards
>>
>>2416948
She actaully loves to bathe, but i let her do it her way and she doesnt wet her upperbody much. The only way i see that dirt coming off was if i tried to cleant it myself, but she probably wont let me.

Getting a borb for the first time. I've narrowed down my choices, cockatiel or lovebird? Should I get a rescue, buy a bird from someone in my hometown or get one from a breeder?

I've got a Cokckatiel for a while now, and while we're all good i'd like some advice on two things mostly.
First off this piece of shit will not stop destroying my plants, and making a huge mess in the process. All my efforts to stop this behavior have failed so now i just spend my days chasing him out of them. Any tips, or am i shit out of luck?
Second, it's impossible to get him in his cage except at night. I let him out as often as i can. Always when i'm home. But then when i do want to put him in it he'll become impossible because as soon as he realizes my intentions he won't let me pick him up or grab him.

Post pic of cage and someone could probably tell you if there might be a problem with the cage itself.
On a somewhat related note, I got a little heater from the Dr. Foster's and Smith webstore (Gray plate attached to the cage). Basically plugs into the wall and stays warm to the touch and my cockatiel absolutely loves it and always gets right up to it when he sleeps

This is some sort of tapaculo in the Scytalopus genus. Even the super-good South American ornithologists have a hard time telling these guys apart. They seemed to believe birds have more sense of agency than any other pet, and that they are similar to children and to wanting to win their affection is seen as wanting to dominate it. Or something. That's how this one lady came off. Said I was too jealous and should just return the bird and get a dog. Funny thing is i've owned birds for 5 years so it's a bit late for that.

Well the smartest parrot was Alex the African Grey, now deceased, Alex was part of a 30 year avian intelligence experiment. By the time he died his researcher estimated his intelligence to match that of a 5 year old child, with the emotional complexity of a 2 year old. A quick Google takes you to his Wikipedia entry

Not really, probably the silliest thing my lorikeet says is "whassittlefing" which is a mash-up of the phrase "what is it, little thing?" because I used to call him "thing" and "ugly" when he was a baby and I tend to mush together the words I repeat to my pets over time. Okay, so some background, I've had a cockatoo for almost 10 years now.
His name is Popcorn and hes an asshole to everyone but me (and sometimes me) but I love him.
A couple of months ago I was at a reptile expo with my buddy who is a reptile breeder, and ended up getting a cute little white faced marble cockatiel from a breeder that was there. Her name is Cookie and she's literally the opposite of popcorn in every way. Super sweet and everyone loves her. Anyways I thought all my large bird skills would transfer over but the more I'm around her the more I realize that she's a bit different and I have some shit to learn about smol birbs.
Well you think that would be enough for me but I was at petsmart the other night, when my reptile friend and I go out for supplies we do a scales & feathers combo and bring our critters with us, kids and people that don't know much about exotics go nuts for it. Well I was hanging out by the parakeet aviary, and while all the others were doing the usual "must get away at all costs" bit, this one little lavender colored guy just couldn't stay away from me and (mostly) Cookie. Well I couldn't resist, and my dumb self bought him. His name is Milk, thus together they are Milk and Cookie. Pic related is them hanging out in Milk's cage together. I have them living in separate cages right next to each other, so they can still see each other and stuff but there's no risk of Cookie turning on him when I'm not supervising.
Anyways, I think I'm gonna let him be for a couple days to get used to his surroundings, he's okay with my hand being in the cage but if I try to pick him up he freaks out.
tl;dr, any tips for someone who's a n00b at smol birbs?
>>
>>2420749
A few fun facts about the situation:
>I have not witnessed Milk drink yet, but I have witnessed him eat so far
>He seems to like to eat at the same time as cookie, and since cookie is kind of a pig I think that bodes well for him
>he has started to chirp and make noise occasionally, not sure if that's a good sign or not
>he's been exploring his cage and figuring out how to jump from perches and walls
>>
>>2420751
House them separately, budgies can be some of the most persistently annoying birbs to larger borbs. He is drinking water but will only let you see him do so once he trusts you wholly. Chirping, noise, even screeching, and warbling are signs of a happy bird. Cage exploration and play means they're settling in and also happy

Reminder that birds are shitty pets and keeping them indoors is cruel.

Hello fellow birb enthusiasts, I was thinking about getting another bird, a small one, I wanted to get a Parrotlet but at the moment they're expensive and not available in my area (tamed). Now however, I'm thinking about getting a Parakeet since they're low matience and in my budget (cage, food, toys and bird of course). However I found my choices where to either tame one from the petstore or buy a male and female and just breed for a baby and hand feed it myself. I looked in my area (nyc) but no one breeds them tamed or has babies available. What do?

Update on Milk and Cookie:
Okay so it's been a few day. I've mostly been letting him be. They live in separate cages right next to each other. Today I went to get cookie out, and he leapt at the cage door and wanted to come out. I figured I would oblige, and opened the door. After a minute or two he hopped on out and is now running around the floor and exploring a bit while I sit with cookie on my knee. He seems afraid of my hands in particular, as he won't step up on them, but will climb on me other ways. He chases cookie around on the floor a little bit, for maybe 30 seconds to a minute at a time, and then leaves her alone once she pretty much tells him to fuck off in birb. He's a pretty active and exploitative little shit, and I'm already starting to love him. Here's a pic of hiim falling asleep on my knee for like a minute before he jumped off to go explore

Hey, /birb/. I don't actually browse /an/ that much but I do like birbs.

I recently moved into a new apartment in a fairly natural environment. Much to my pleasant surprise, some cute birbs have taken residence with a little nest nestled in some sort of structure in the side wall of my balcony. I took note of this, spent a little time clenching fists in reflex to how adorable this was and went on my merry way.

A few days later, I noticed that the birb droppings situated below the nest have grown into a literal, sizeable pile and while trying to make sense of how it could grow so rapidly, I noticed that the nest was now filled with 4 adorable freshly hatched birbs. They're basically just big feathered blobs with mouths. Super cute.

However, this does exasperate the cleaning situation. I'd normally wash it off/dump water and scrub away, but I'm on the third floor and I don't want to destroy or otherwise mess with the neighbors' balcony on the floor below. I want to be as discrete, too, in case there's some sort of unspoken rule or lease violation that occurs if they know wild birbs have taken residence on your balcony, because I do enjoy having them here. Flies are starting to gather there, so I need some sort of solution soon.

What's the best way to discretely clean up an inordinate amount of bird shit and subsequently maintain the cleanliness of my balcony?
>>
>>2422538
put some bucket under the nest or something
>>
>>2422541

My sister got a cockatiel. 80 days old. unkown sex. fairly big cage. alone, only bird we have.

the bird is getting more and more sticky and annoying every day, chirping and flapping a lot because he/she wants to get out, calling out to us everytime people leave the room, while we'd like to it to be quiet.
We decided to start to ignore it more so s/he won't get used to us answering too frequently, but i am not quite sure we are doing it consistently.
The bird cage is right beside my sister's bed and given it's summer and she is studying for exams in the room and her boyfriend lives there playing WoW and other bullshit a lot, the bird is almost always in company.

do you have any behavioural tip?how many hours should the bird spend outside of the cage? is there such a thing as them growing too attached to people to the point they can't really stay alone?

Hey guys i'm from a third world Country and i guess it's fair to say that the pet business here is really negligent towards animals.

With that out of the way, my father loves birds so my sister and i decided to gift him a couple of Cockatiels, we managed to come across a cute couple from a very...suspicious place to say the least they looked scared and uncomfortable so we decided to take them home.

Now the problem is i have no idea if the cage dimensions ore materials are proper to them, they look very scared, the shop owner took them out of their cage in the shop in a very brutish way and i'm afraid they've most likely experienced this kind of treatment before. To make matters worse one of them is making a noise as if it was having trouble to breathe.

I've been doing some research on their diet and enjoyment and i'm willing to spend as much money as necessary to get them imported toys or anything so i was just wondering if you guys could give me any advice.

Here is a picture of the current set up we have for them and i'm more than sure that it's not good at all.

Brooding is normal but I suggest taking her out and forcing her to move around and eat (grass). She can always go back to lay but it's good to discourage brooding if she's not setting because they eat less and move less. Not great for their health to do it constantly for months.

On Monday, I will be calling the federal government to schedule my falconry permit test. I am super nervous.

I spoke to a biologist working for the government and visited a master falconer. Everyone has been encouraging me and I am studying hard. Please wish me luck guys.

My goal is to return this fall to this thread with my permit and talk about manning my first hawk.

I currently work at a petco and we conures in pretty often. Now some of them are pretty nice, but of course there are the mean ones, like the one we have right now.
If the door is closed he'll rush you down to the glass and try to bite your fingers
when you open he wusses out until you try to pet him, then he bites you.

Recently I opened it and laid my hands flat on the cage floor and he came down and just like of licked and nibbled on them. But as soon as I lift my finger to try to get him to step on it, he'll put one foot on and then bite down hard.

What can I do to help correct his behavior? Is it as simple as a light bap on the nose and a firm no, or is something more complex needed?

Also curious, on my way home there was this birb just sitting in the middle of the street. Kinda small, anyway after passing over it in my car coming home I went out to look at it. I nudged it with my foot and it didn't react. I went inside to get a shoe box to put it in but when I tried grabbing it birb flew into a nearby bush. What's up with that?
>>
>>2419279
Oh well shit rip birb

Food training is pretty much the best method. Biting equals no food, good behavior equals food.

I only work with game birds, chickens and raptors and parrots are kind of another story.

Probably just shocked, it may have run into something such as a window and was resting in the road.

Nice. Just remember to come back. I need more people who will understand me if I want to bitch about NAFA's PC boner and "ethics" propaganda that is designed to make falconers feel bad for making human mistakes and generally not being perfect little angels and "threatening the existence of the sport" because PETA is literally magic and can unilaterally legislate it out of existence or some shit. Too many apprentices never wake up out of that koolaid induced trance and they become the next generation of falconers that fucking HELP USFWS enact the draconian totalitarian shit they pull.

Petco conure guy again, I've had a pretty big breakthrough after getting to spend some quality time with him today
It turns out hes just wants to play but has no sense of boundaries
after about 15 minutes with him he's starting to understand that OW means he went too far
hes not quite to the point of stepping onto my finger, but he'll climb around on my hands if I lay them down

How hard should I boil an egg if I want to feed it to either canaries or quakers?

Okay /birb/, story time...
>moved to Texas about 8 years ago
>wake up every morning to the sound of a LOUD, throaty bird call outside my window
>didn't even know it was a bird at the time
>didn't really think much of it either, until one night I had a nightmare about a creature hiding in the bushes, with huge glowing eyes, making that sound
>start to wonder just what animal it could possibly be
>think it's probably an owl, listen to some youtube clips of various owl calls, but to no avail (their hoots are much too soft)
>spend years googling various bird breeds that live in my state and listening to dozens of bird call compilations on youtube
>be today, with a stroke of luck I come across a video of a dove that KIND OF has the same call as the one I always hear
>manage to narrow down the search to "doves of central Texas," do some more googling, listen to some more clips
>turns out it's a white-winged dove
>literally every video of these fuckers on youtube has a small handful of comments saying "HOLY SHIT I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR YEARS"
>that feel when I'm not alone
>that feel when I'm one of a select few who has made this journey
>that feel when victory tastes so sweet
>that feel when at last I am finally free

Cage seems fine, its pretty big.
Just get your birds used to you, dont just walk up to the cage, but just do your daily routine.
Feed them and talk to them.

I've been trying to ID this for a fucking week. It's a Tanager from the Andes, but I'm too lazy to look through 200 species to find out which one this is. When I ID this, I'll make a thread about it. Good fucking job you faggot.
