A domestic cat is extremely easy to control.
Cats are just solitary predators while dogs are social hierarchical pack hunter/scavengers.

I always seem to put cats off. I don't really know how to interact with them in a way that they like, unlike dogs.

All I wanted when I was a kid was a kitten, but my mom and stepdad were both allergic.

In high school/college I had some friends/friends-of-friends who kept cats, and they never cleaned up after them. The feeling of not being able to go shoeless in someone's house because you knew you would step in tracked litter...it's disgusting. I'm not saying all cat owners are dirty, but it really put me off.

I don't hate cats. I hate shitty cat owners who let them outside and take no responsibility for them or even the steps to keep them safe (breakaway, reflective, belled collars, keeping them clawed, getting catios).

The biggest mistake I see dog people making over and over is trying to treat cats like dogs, then blaming the cat (it's "mean") when it doesn't respond well. With dogs you can go straight in for a pet, back-and-forth rub them, thump on their sides, they're fine with that shit. Cats want to come to you (not you to them), sniff you before you touch them, and initially restrict stroking to safe areas (cheeks, chin, ears/head). You can't manhandle and restrict them like a dog and expect them to react well.

Some cats are also prone to overstimulation. This is the "I was scratching the cat and suddenly it swatted me for NO REASON/with NO WARNING (there is almost always warning, but cats don't communicate like dogs so people don't read it)". Sometimes full-body pets can be too much for an individual cat to handle; this is why you stick to the safe areas mentioned above. In particular, the rump is the area most prone to overstimulation.

And never touch the belly. It's not a trap, but that's not why they're rolling over. Some cats do very much enjoy belly rubs (two of my three do) but unless you're savvy with reading cat body language, don't chance it.

I'm the same as you. I exclusively loved dogs until I was a teenager, when my younger sister got a cat and then started taking care of cats over the years instead of a dog. I didn't warm up to it still, but by the time she got a second kitten and I was more comfortable and tolerant of them, I started understanding how you have to earn their affection.

Many years later, I'm now preferential to cats over dogs. I find them to be just as affectionate, as the dogs I've owned and none have ran away despite repeatedly leaving doors and windows open.

Won't get a dog again unless I have a house and decent yardage.

I love cats, they're my favorite, MY cat is the most gigantic bitch cat on the planet, she loves me (I've been depressed and the less I pay attention to her the more aggressive she is when I do pet her, she pretends it doesnt bother her otherwise) but she doesn't "play scratch" she fucking tries to tear your arm off.

every other cat I had didn't attack so harshly, and she is always guarded. you have to pet her and back away from the back of her neck where she can't reach around and get you, a couple times she missed me and hissed at me for that.
