I realized I can easily register a guinea pig as an "emotional support animal" with no questions asked. This will allow me to keep one in my dorm.
Is this a good idea? Are they smelly? Easy to take care of?

No, I highly doubt you could appropriately house guinea pigs in a little dorm room
Also, a single one is shit. They are social animals that should be kept at least as two.

How much space could you offer for their pen?
>The following guidelines are useful to determine the space needed for guinea pigs. One guinea pig: 7.5 square feet cage (minimum), but more is better; generally 30" x 36" is a good size. Two guinea pigs: 7.5 square feet (minimum), but 10.5 square feet is preferred; generally 30" x 50" is a good size.

Do not keep only one unless you know it is already inclined towards asocial/introverted behavior (some male pigs are, but you can never tell until they've been with other pigs). Find a rescue and see if they have any non bonded guineas, check to see if they have a history of asocial behavior such as fighting with other pigs, more "happy" body language when alone, stress when encountering other pigs, ect.
Even if you do find one that's fine on it's own, you'll need to socialize with it every day. They can still get depressed if they don't have some sort of interaction.

I figured I could put them on the counter top. It's a 4ft by 3ft space I imagine
If anyone can recommend an easier animal to take care of, I would do that too
