I feel like a horrible piece of shit when I have to leave my doggo by himself at home when I work but I have next to no choice sometimes. I can tell he's lonely and he howls for me when I leave. I'm going to get a second dog at some point when I have a little more time but is there anything /an/ recommend I do int he mean time to keep him entertained and engaged so he doesn't just mope around and sleep all day? I don't want him to be miserable, it breaks my heart.
I've been screening for a good dog walker or otherwise who can come over during the day and play with him but so far no luck in my area.

if it's the former that's the best you can hope for. if he's howling you need to train him to be calm and sleep while you're away

I guess that makes sense if theres no other options. I think im also wondering if theres any thing in the way of puzzles or toys i can get him that would at least give him something to do that are /an/ approved

If you can't find anyone then maybe consider a doggy daycare? It'll be expensive but at least he'd be happy.

Dogs don't really get lonely like people, moreso bored and unstimulated. Give him a long with treats or something. They can be solemn animals and another dog, if that's the only reason you want another one, will be just as bored and won't really mitigate the first dogs boredom

Gets easier when they get older. Had an old beagle mutt who eventually wouldn't even see me off if he was to comfy. Once I got home he would demand his daily treat for existing and then lounge around with me.. just give it time
