Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

/aq/, please help. I have gone through 5 fucking heaters in the past month. I just took my 300w topfin back after it got water inside of it, and the cashier was very surprised and said that they never get returns on them. I got an aqueon heater anyway after hearing good things about it. So, I just turned on my aqueon heater and it's been about 5 minutes. It ALREADY has water inside of it. I didn't even have the top of it submerged. The water only just barely touched the minimum water line. How the fuck did this happen? The same thing happened to the topfin heater. And the heater before that.

And I was having a problem where the 3 sparkling gouramis had each picked a cave (left side, middle, and right side of aquarium) and we're being super territorial towards the Scarlett badi. Poor little guy was being chased by the 3 gouramis from one end of the aquarium to the other nonstop, so I rearranged the hardscape and made a bunch of caves. Hopefully it's enough for the 3 sparklings, the badi, and the peacock gudgeon. If not I'll take two of those gouramis back and get females like i asked for originally.

Excuse the murky water, had to move a lot of sand and it kind of made a mess. Vacuumed up what I could, now waiting for things to settle so I can vacuum it again.

BTW, what is a good affordable light fixture that has a day/night cycle feature? Something with more than just white lights, but won't break the bank. I let it sit in the tank for a half hour, just like the instructions told me to. Even if I DID fuck it up though, I don't understand how the hell there's water in it if I haven't even submerged it. The glass isn't broken and it's submerged just barely to the line.

>>
>>2399742
the water is in there from moisture in the air. It's extremely common.

the reason the store hasn't gotten any returns before is because we've all seen it so many times we don't care. Yes, your $23 heater has condensation in it. Yes, that means the seal was bad at some point. Yes, that means it'll break some months or years from now and we'll have to buy another $23 heater. It's not a big deal.

it's 23 fucking dollars, barely even worth driving to the store to exchange.
>>

The finnex 24/7 is a decent one. Cycles through morning and night. Doesn't even go completely off though. Darkest it gets is a very very dim blue. Like really dim. I've heard the 24/7 SE is better. There's also a Chinese rip off version on eBay that does the same thing and it's like $50 for 48 inch version.

>>
>>2399794
Not that guy but I've had good experiences with chinese knockoffs. However, blue lights ended up being not as cool as I thought it'd be. Looks like night to me, but it's practically daytime for unwanted algae.

I end up just dimming the whole thing instead of switching to a blue "nighttime" mode.
>>
>>2399799
any particular Chinese knock off model you'd recommend? My main thing is I want one with good day/night cycle colors and light distribution. I'm not too concerned about the blue night light. I've stopped using a nightlight, the fish seem to hate it.

>>
>>2399800
I've had pretty good experiences with Green Element, especially the 3W LED versions for high light plant requirements, but with all the bells and whistles you're looking for they can get pretty expensive too. Certain models have an external plug-in with the stuff you're looking for but it's an extra $15+ on top of what you're already paying.

I've never found a heater that's worth paying extra for. So I buy 2 cheap heaters and run them both at the same time. That way I've got a backup if one dies.

I don't trust bimetallic thermostats though. So I spent all of $12 on a digital temperature controller.
>>
>>2399807

>>
>>2399808
>running to the store every time you want to test absolutely anything just to save $30 for a kit that will last years
Holy shit are you that poor? You might want to reconsider owning any pets at all.

It would also cost more in gasoline or public transit in the long run anyway. The nitrate test is good for 90 tests. Have fun with the 90 trips to the LFS.
>>
>>2399809
>I've never found a heater that's worth paying extra for. So I buy 2 cheap heaters and run them both at the same time. That way I've got a backup if one dies.
>I don't trust bimetallic thermostats though. So I spent all of $12 on a digital temperature controller.
The big problem I've seen is that when they break, they don't simply not heat your tank, which would be totally fine unless you don't heat your house, but that they have a good chance of overheating your tank. Broken thermostat = never ending heat cycle = fish dead by the time you get home from work. If it were always the case that it just shorts out and doesn't do anything, the fish could survive in slightly chillier waters for days.
>>
>>2399808
If I'm already going o the LFS I might take a sample with me, but definitely invest in a API master kit. It's 100% worth it. You can test any time, retest if you think you fucked it up, and react quicker.

>>2399809
I can understand your point of view, but I disagree on going cheap, because as most things, you get what you pay for. Aqueon Pros have been godsends for me though. If you have a tank over 50g though, you should be running 2 heaters on opposite ends anyway.
>>
>>2399818
>they have a good chance of overheating your tank.
that's what the controller is for. It shuts them off at a programmed temp. So I don't care if they get stuck on, that's how I run them.

1) Only if your time is worth nothing. The time it takes you to get to your car and start it up, I'm already waiting for test results.
2) Even if you got 40 miles/gallon and gasoline was $3/gal, at 4 miles/trip you're looking at 10 trips a gallon, or 9 gallons for 90 trips, or $27 for 90 tests, which only covers the worst case scenario of nitrate tests (pH goes for 250, nitrite for 180). And good luck getting 40 miles/gallon on short range trips unless you've got an electric or hybrid car.

So no, again, short term thinking. You're still not "saving." At best you're breaking even while losing time.

So I have a DIY C02 system on my 40g. I'm not really sure I'm getting any results yet. How long should I wait to see if it's worth my time to make mash and let it pump into my tank?
>>
>>2399929
I could point out that unless your fish cost more than a test kit it's cheaper to replace the fish every now and then rather than test water.

I think water testing is a good habit to get into though. Eventually /aq/ might buy fish that cost more than test strips. Not from what I've seen, but you never know.
>>
>>2399944
Cost of the fish shouldn't really matter in the end. Sure, throwing away a dead platy because I didn't control ammonia levels is cheaper then a $30 investment. However learning to perform a water test with that kit, and doing it on my cheap fish is what builds the skill and expertise to keep those expensive fish.

It should be about building experience and talent to keeping complex fish. It's the reason I perform bi-weekly water tests. I want to own something big in a year or so down the road.
>>
>>2399952
>It should be about building experience and talent to keeping complex fish.
I agree to some extent. It's probably cheaper and better in the long run to be able to gauge water quality based on fish behavior and algae growth and such. And really everyone should be in the habit of changing water regularly anyways, which makes testing anything but ammonia mostly unnecessary.

What do you want to keep?
>>
>>2399944
>I could point out that unless your fish cost more than a test kit it's cheaper to replace the fish every now and then rather than test water.
That's still also short term thinking. Replacing ONE platy is cheaper than a test kit. Replacing many cheap fish is not.

Doesn't matter how you cut it. Investing in a test kit always wins economically, in addition to other (totally valid) reasons.

And like I mentioned with heaters, if you're so poor that you're trying to penny pinch on a ~$25 kit, you should rethink having any pets at all.

In the world of pet keeping, one item that lasts at least a year, likely two or more, for a mere $25 is a fucking steal.
>>
>>2399959
>which makes testing anything but ammonia mostly unnecessary.
If by ammonia you mean nitrate.

Your bio filter should be mature enough after some months that you don't worry about it and it should be able to cope with any reasonable variations.
>>
>>2399929
>/aq/ : Where good advice goes to die.
That's okay. That idiot is wasting both time and money while thinking he's saving money. lol
>>
>>2399965
>ONE platy is cheaper than a test kit. Replacing many cheap fish is not.
test kits are an ongoing expense, and over time they don't save you money unless you're killing off an entire tank every month or two.
>if you're so poor that you're trying to penny pinch on a ~$25 kit, you should rethink having any pets at all.
I agree but /aq/ gets pissed when I say it.
>>2399969
>If by ammonia you mean nitrate.
that's what water changes are for. If you're changing water and there's no nitrate in your replacement water there's no real reason to test it.

testing ammonia is useful because even mature biofilters can die, and ammonia is far more toxic than nitrate. I don't test for it personally, but only because in saltwater you'll know immediately if you've got ammonia. Everything dies.

Pretty much anywhere you can find angelfish, there will be cory and tetra species in that body of water. Cories are in almost every body of water east of the Andes, and there are so many species of tetra that their distribution would be similar to the cories. The distribution of Angelfish is a little more limited, but is contained within the ranges of cory and tetra species.

The Orinoco river contains altum angels, habrosus and concolor cories, and rummynose and cardinal tetras, for example.
>>

Do they live in the same parts of the river? I feel like this would make a great tank. I found out lemon tetras and angels live in rio tapajos together, but i couldnt find any cories there. only expensive plecos.

Hey /aqg/, some time within the last few days my Mystery snail escaped the tank. It has been out of the tank for approximately 2-3 days. I only found it today behind my tank. Sneaky bastard. Anyways, after retrieving it I took a quick sniff of the snail to see if it was dead. Nothing. Not sure if it is dead. Any other ways I could check to see if the snail is indeed dead?

I should also mention the nerite had been missing for weeks. I bought it at petsmart because it was notorious for crawling on top of all the tanks and appearing in different tanks every day. I found it in the bottom of my dog's toy basket. RIP.

Plecos can grow about an inch a month. But remember that once they max out their size in a tank they might stunt. When they stunt, they stop growing outside, but their organs keep growing, which will shorten their lifespan.

>not enjoying the taste of ammonia, nitrate, and nitrate

If your tank smells strongly swampy with a bit of plant rot then it's not fully cycled yet. It goes fresh, then strongly swampy, then very, very mild. Like when my tanks get mature, I have to put my nose right up to the tank to smell anything. When it's still in the middle of cycling that swampy smell will fill the fucking room.

>have a marmorkreb that's over two years old
>third batch of children
>first batch stayed in the tank and are now mothers themselves
>second batch did not make it but looked like it had double the amount of eggs than the first batch

here's the scoop:
>the third batch of babby successfully were born, and right as they were released they stood near the mom, some of them roamed free
>shut off the tank lights for some shuteye
>next day
>all of the children are missing except for the lone wolves
>assume that they got eaten or were hiding really well
>11:30 AM EST
>tank lights on, crayfish kids are back
>mom still has some of her kids on her swimmerets
>shut off the tank lights
>realized that i could come back and see what would happen to the remaining kids
>mother crayfish is out
>turn on tank lights
>turns out that they come back to the mom's swimmerets after detaching themselves from her

I maintained multiple fish tanks over the course of four years with tens of guppies. They attacked everything, including each other and the placo. It could just be general shock and difficulty adjusting to new life. It could have been sick when you bought it. I wouldn't consider it anything you did wrong unless you had them for a few weeks or so.

Example: I had bought 4 peppered corys when I originally started one of my tanks. They were doing alright, buy on day 5, one of them was floating around, couldn't right itself and all that. Turns out it had swim bladder disease when I bought it.

The betta generally swims away but sometimes turns around and chases the little shit off. Am I wrong for kind of wanting the betta to attack the crap out of this little asshole tetra? The betta could swallow him whole if he gets mad enough. I almost want him to do it.

I bought of these little 5 gallon hexagon aquariums from a garage sale. I didn't bother taking the hood off at the time, but when I got it home, I did and noticed chips missing from the top of the aquarium. No cracks or leaks, but can I trust it to hold water? Picture related, but no mine. I've highlighted the areas where the chips are.
>>
>>2402940
put water in them and see for yourself? Why are you even asking something so obvious when you have to check them for water tightness anyway?
>>
>>2399942
We have this local put supply/fish store called Kaya's. And they have an aquarium on the front counter, a little 10 gallon with some shrimp and live plants. They looked really healthy, and I asked what they did to keep them that way. They said all they used was organic soil, and the strip light LED's in the hood. They told me that C02 systems were not necessary for healthy plan growth, and the only people who used them were purists who wanted to feel entitled for doing things "by the book".

Is this true? I mean that aquarium is beautiful, and so lively.
>>
>>2402942
When I say no leaks, I figured it was implied that I tested for leaks. I'm not worried about that though. I'm more worried about the kind of stress that chips in the acrylic could potentially receive over time, and it would eventually lead to cracks and leaks.
>>
>>2402417
>>2402427
These are excellent. However if your fish are used to flakes, they may not like them at first. They are quite hard and do not soften that quickly.

NLS also makes excellent flakes so I tend to feed a mix of both as the staple.
>>
>>2402944
you seem to be overthinking it. For 5 gallons of water, I wouldn't be concerned about pressure

But again, it's not something anyone here can tell you. Only thing you can do is what you'd have to do anyway which is cycle the tank and see it there are any issues in the few weeks before you add fish. If it's fine at the end then I wouldn't worry

If you're worried anyway then DIY some supports

Alright guys I'm ready. What's a good, cheap set up for co2? None of that yeast in a 2 liter crap. I want something I can sit off at night without great of explosion.
>>
>>2402943
Depends on the type of plants you put in your tank. Some will want more C02 then others, and a lack of it will lower the rate of growth. For the most part though, yeah, CO2 isn't required.I can say when I was running it my plants grew about twice as fast, but it was densely plants with a lot of fish to help produce CO2 as well. All in all it's really up to you on if you want plants to grow quickly, or if you decided ot pick a plant that likes a lot more CO2 then most.
>>
>>2403066
CO2 IS BAD.
CARBON EMISSIONS.
GLOBAL WARMING.
ICE CAPS.
POLAR BEARS.

>>
>>2403066
Co2 is needed for some plants. Some. Without it they grow weird. Then there's the fact if you have too much PAR then the plants will try to grow quickly but then you have to balance ferts to give them enough to grow and not grow algae every where. But for the most part co2 isn't needed and a well planted and balanced tank can fight off algae.

Well, my planted tanks are officially cleaning themselves. Did water tests over the last week, and not even a Nitrate to be found.

I guess that means I'm going to be saving a few bucks on prime.
>>
>>2403151
Prime is also to removed chlorine. Unless you're on a well or don't have live stock you'll need to keep them healthy and the beneficial bacteria.
>>
>>2403078
They're turning the freakin frogs gay!
>>
>>2403153
I'm implying I don't have to do a large amount of water changes.
Which means using less prime.
>>
>>2403170
If you do a 5 gallon water change on a 100 gallon tank and add water directly you have to treat the entire tank unless you treat the water first.
>>
>>2403219
Or you treat 5 gallons... which means you treat less water...
Are you autistic? Do you have Asperger or something? Are implications something you don't grasp?
>>
>>2402729
They're fine either way. I kept them at 65 in the winter without issue and there was a guy on a forum who kept them outdoors in a wine barrel and they kept breeding throughout the 90+ degree summers.

>>2402954
Vinegar and muriatic acid are both supposedly safe with acrylic. Cheap acrylic scratches really easily, so no razor blades or scrubbers. Use a credit card if you need to scrape something. Even a magic eraser is going to fog it.
>>
>>2403219
you can skip it on a 5% water change.

you treat for chlorine, which is deadly to bacteria at the concentrations in your tap water. It doesn't do anything at 5% that concentration though. It probably wouldn't do anything at 50% concentration either, but we treat it just in case.

tl;dr: treating water for small water changes isn't critical.
>>
>>2403232
Maybe you're the actual retard here. If you replace 5 gallons worth of water directly into the tank you treat the ENTIRE tank. This is very common knowledge in the community.
>>2403267
A %50 is big enough to warrant the use as I've experienced an ammonia spike forgetting to dose in the begging of the hobby.
>>
>>2403284
>I've experienced an ammonia spike forgetting to dose
yeah, it depends on how strong the chlorine is in your local water, if they use chloramine, and where you pour the water in the tank.

50% certainly can cause problems. It probably won't for most people though. Water companies use as little chlorine as possible to do the job.

if you've got chloramine you have to treat no matter the amount.
>>
>>2403232
You're not the brightest guy are you? You probably shouldn't be keeping fish. But I'm just going to brush it off as bait since I don't think anyone can be this stupid.
>>
>>2403293
he's saying you don't have to treat the whole tank, you just treat the new water.

he's right. Nobody dumps untreated water into their tank and then treats the whole thing. That would be absurd and probably pointless since chlorine kills instantly.
>>
>>2403288
Depends. Water treatment plants will chlorine the fuck out of water to keep it clean. Especially to not get in trouble. You may notice it more around with lots and lots of rain, flooded rivers, or changing of seasons especially winter into spring.
>>
>>2403294
You have never used a python water changer have you? Have you even done a water change? As a matter of fact do you even own a tank? These are serious questions. I use a python. I do bi weekly water changes of 50 percent. Water goes directly into the tanks along with prime (I double dose because I can smell the chlorine in my water). This tank has been running for years without a problem. You don't treat what you add. When you add it directly into the tank you treat your entire tank according to the directions for your tanks volume. Come on guys seriously? None of you know this?
>>
>>2403298
>None of you know this?
I have saltwater tanks so I don't use tapwater and can't use a python.

I see what you mean though. I just forget these things exist because pouring untreated tapwater into a tank while the filter's running is a terrible idea. Easier than hauling buckets though.
>>
>>2403301
But it isn't. Freshwater people do this all the time. Chlorine doesn't kill the bacteria right away. When you add prime it acts right away. I hate feeling like I'm talking down on people but this information can be found online. Sometimes I really hate this hobby due to the mass misinformation.
>>
>>2403284
If you put five gallons of water in a bucket and treat it in the bucket, you only have to treat it for five gallons.

I don't believe you're actually this stupid. I think you're faking it. But I'm bored.
>>
>>2403302
>Chlorine doesn't kill the bacteria right away.
not all of them anyways.
again there's a number of variables at work.

if it works for you then go for it. I personally wouldn't, but I don't keep freshwater anyways.
>>
>>2403303
Yes if you put it in the bucket you treat the bucket. If you add it DIRECTLY INTO THE AQUARIUM YOU TREAT THE ENTIRE AQUARIUM. Reading comprehension helps.
>>

Yeah, some reading comprehension could definitely have helped you from looking like a massive fucking retard.
>>
>>2403310
Maybe you don't use google or visit other forums or do any type of research at all. If you can't do that then give away your fish and tanks.
>>
>>2403311
maybe not.

there's still the question -
if you put 5g of chlorinated water into a 100g tank do you still need to dose 100g worth of prime?

I'm not sure but I'd guess no.
>>
>>2403311
No. Im saying you need it. I was very clear and concise from the beginning. You didn't even bother reading the entire post. Just made up whatever you saw. When I said you treat the entire tank when adding water directly to it I mean YOU TREAT THE ENTIRE TANK WHEN YOU ADD WATER DIRECTLY TO IT. I even capitalized it for you so you can read it better.
>>
>>2403314
Yes. You do. If you're going to dose your 100 gallon tank anyway after that change you treat the entire tank. This is not a hard concept. There's even directions on the bottle.
>>
>>2403316
>Yes. You do. If you're going to dose your 100 gallon tank anyway after that change you treat the entire tank
why?
chlorine is now diluted at 1/20th the rate prime is designed to treat, why add 20 times more than you need?
>There's even directions on the bottle.
well of course the manufacturer wants you to use 20 times more product than necessary.
>>
>>2403319
Because the prime will not work the way it's intended. If seachem wanted you to use their product up as quickly as possible they wouldn't make it so you use so little and make products like safe.
>>
You stupid fucking niggers. https://www.fishlore.com/aquariumfishforum/threads/adding-water-conditioner-before-during-or-after-water-change.151142/ The first link. The first fucking link. I see people adding it to buckets first, I see people treating the entire tank because they use a python, people letting the water sit, and people using bubblers overnight.

apparently neither of us knows how it works.

>>2403323

out of curiosity, how do you know the shit you read on other forums is true? Do you go by how many people believe it or is there some other secret? People are retarded, anon. Those people probably are too.
>>
>>2403327
I'm not the anon who you're arguing with. What you two idiots need to understand people are gonna do what works for them. Prime also isn't anything special. If you looked up the ingredients then you'd know how it works and I'm not going to explain to you idiots.
>>
>>2403330
>What you two idiots need to understand people are gonna do what works for them
if you read the thread you'd see I already said that.

My point is that anon is ignoring the prime directions by adding it after a change and it's working for him.

what's to say ignoring the directions about dosing tank volume won't work for him as well? Magic? Chemistry? I don't believe you know.

I kept freshwater for 16 years. I've kept planted tanks, I've kept African cichlids, I've kept RBP's, and I used to breed discus.
>I'm guessing you hopped directly into salt water just to brag about all the money you have to spend to keep your fish alive?
I'm a multimillionaire, if I want to impress you with money I probably won't start with my fish tank.

I got into saltwater because I prefer NATURAL beauty. Most freshwater has now been bred to appear unnatural. Salt water has not with the recent exception of clownfish. And salt water fish ARE beautiful. I think so anyways. I spend a lot of time traveling the world diving, and I like to come home to my little ocean.

cool. A seahorse isn't a bad choice. There's a lot you need to know- the easiest way to get started is going to be reading basics on marine tanks online or get books (marine aquariums for dummies or whatever).

you'll need a 40g tank or larger, filtration and skimmer, heater and perhaps chiller, lights (probably reef lighting). Look into their special dietary requirements- there's a few strategies to meet them. Some people grow seagrass and raise copepods and amphipods in the grass. Some raise the same inverts using live rock. Either way the diet will need to be supplemented with bought food, both live and frozen crustaceans are commonly used.

there used to be an anon here that kept seahorses, perhaps they're still around.
