While camping in middle TN last weekend I heard this remarkably loud bird that im trying to identify. The call would start up around sundown and persist until early morning. It was two seperate, clear, loud as shit whistles(i say whistle, but it wasnt something a human could reproduce) which would be answered by the same call from far away. It was quick, each "whistle" was maybe 0.5 sec long.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
-At one point the bird was right in our campsite. i was walking over to get a closer look and i guess i spooked it but hopped off its branch, clapped its wings(very loudly, like someone knocking two clubs wrapped in cloth together) and made this crazy fucking guttural/vibrating noise like nothing ive ever heard as it flew off.
-From my brief glimpse it looked a lot like pic related(nighthawk) but i cant find any videos or recordings that sound like the loud two-syllable call this one was making.
-This bird did not dive in order to make the loud vibrating/guttural sound
-this is not the call i heard: https://youtu.be/E-_CDXH9qhY
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to provide enough information for someone to be able to help.

It did sound similar to that, but it was only 2 syllables. And for what its worth the bird was kind big, like crow-sized
there's fucking fighter jet pilots on /k/ are there really no ornotholigists on /an/??
looks like a nighthawk

The call you're describing sounds like the common pauraque, you're just a 1000 miles away from where they're found.
They don't whistle, but it could be a black-crowned night heron. They sometimes do a double call.

it's a slow board.
The only other goatsucker east of the Mississippi is the Chuck-will's-widow. They're bigger than both nighthawks and whip-poor-wills, but they are absolutely not "crow-sized" and their night-song is even more distinctly tri-syllabic than a whip-poor-will's if you are close to it, at least to my ears.

whistle isnt the right word, maybe like "Doo-woop".
