Hello.

I recognize that bird.

This tiny yellow one got into my house and bite while I was lying on couch.

Why the fuck is it even here? How do I prevent this?

I used to work on a blueberry farm, and there were hundreds of hornets around all the fucking time. I ended up quitting after a dozen or so chased me half a mile across the property. I've never run that fast from anything in my life, and I used to do beer runs in a small town with bored cops.
Since then I've been scared to death of wasps. I can't help it, it's an immediate reaction to fucking run. Every spring I stock up on wasp killer and make the rounds every day around my house.

Paper wasps are normally bros unless you fuck with their nests or press them against you in some way like in a window curtain you are moving. They are pretty docile otherwise.

Bald Faced Hornets and Yellow Jackets can fuck right off though. Yellow Jackets are only a problem around their nest or if you have some scent that is attracting them or one went down your soda straw. Bald Faced Hornets are simply massive cunts. It is like they are constantly in rage mode. If you have some scent that is attracting them (food usually) they go apeshit on your ass simply because you suddenly violated their airspace.
>>
>>2397236

Well the problem with hornets is that when one stings you, you're basically fucked, because along with the poison in the sting, they inject a pheromone marker that basically says to the rest of their hive "hey everyone, sting this target until it's dead".

In the immortal words of the Heavy Weapons Guy:

I fear no man. But that... THING... It scares me.
>>
>>2397218

a more accurate description would be *you feel all encompassing, agonizing pain* (for 3 minutes)

can confirm, bald faced hornets are total dicks
sometimes they'll headbutt you as a warning but usually they start stinging immediately after that anyway

On the flipside I'm not allergic to poison ivy and can rub that shit all over my skin and nothing happens. People bitch I have poison ivy in my yard. It's for trespassing fucks, just like my thorn vines errywhere.

I work around paper wasps all the time. I pick up their nests and move them while I do something then move them back. They eat pests in the garden. The bricks they are under are labeled only to prevent sliding the brick and destroying the nest.

Sounds like Giant Hogweed, just not as bad. That shit is a nightmare. You have to bandage up the exposed area ASAP to keep it from all forms of light for like a week or two. If it gets exposed then you'll be dealing with blisters for a few YEARS.

bald faced hornets, wasps from the genus vespula, baldfaced hornets and Asian giant hornets are absolute cunts.

honeybees, bumblebees and regular hornets are total bro's tho
>>
>>2397637
When I don't have my bee suit on and I'm working around my hives I cover half my face so the bee's face recognition isn't as good. It works pretty well, but I'm not disturbing a bald faced hornet nest either.

When I'm opening the bee hives they will attack my face constantly. They will dive bomb the screen that's 2 inches from my eyes. They don't tend to hit anywhere else with as much frequency.

>>
>>2398305
Why are your hives so aggressive, do you live in an AHB area? I check on my bees without a veil all the time and don't have issues, even with the veil I rarely get head bumps. I've never gotten stung inspecting my own hives. Admittedly one hive has been pretty hot lately and I tend to close them up halfway through the bottom brood inspection since they get aggro, they're from Craigslist tho, my other hives are nice.
>>
>>2398473
Yes, true for all wasps and bees. You can grab drone bees and take them around to play with them and freak people out but they don't have stingers.

>>2397664
It has reverse tolerance, you may one day become allergic.

>>2397930
Get on my level. Took out a yellow jacket in my kitchen with one of these bad boys the other day. Shoots regular table salt, accurate sights with a decently tight spread. I got the Lawn & Garden edition as it shoots more salt per shot, need the penetration to take out yellow jackets and cockroaches.

Speaking of wasps nests, do they ever start building a nest and just stop without any kind of external influence? I had the start to a paper wasp nest with a few wasps tending to it on the fence directly opposite my chicken house recently, and I left it alone because I was planning on building a chicken run using that fence as one of the walls and I figured the chickens would have fun with the wasps. By the time I actually got around to building the run, however, the nest was completely abandoned and I haven't seen a wasp in that area for a while.

I know my chickens didn't do anything to it because I never let them outside until after the run was finished.

Colonies die in nature all the time. A beehive may cast several swarms in the spring and only a few will survive. Paper wasps and yellow jackets and many other wasps have virgin queens and drones mate in the fall. The colonies die out as it gets cold while the new fertile queen overwinter, hibernating alone somewhere safe (hence, if you find a bigass yellowjacket sleeping in winter, kill it and you save yourself from a whole colony later). In spring the queens emerge and find a nesting site, setting up enough nest to lay some brood. That brood hatches and begins expanding while the queen lays. Paper wasp colonies only get up to a few hundred iirc, yellow jackets and hornets go to a few thousand. Who knows why yours abandoned their nest. Felt it wasn't safe, had a bad storm kill most of them off and the survivors (if any) dipped, etc.

If there were a few wasps the queen already set up that site and started laying, but maybe they found a better one and decided to move. I am not sure if wasps do that, but they're smaller and their queens are more mobile.

Of note, when trying to look up if wasps move their colonies I found a guy in Hong Kong who moves wasp nests to protect them. Some neat stories.

They are all wild bees. No clue what strain they are. Only one hive is really pissy. The others are mostly fine. Most of the aggro was when I was brushing the queen off a tree when they were swarming. But, there's a decided difference in the temperament of each hive.
>>
>>2398671
I took out a yellow jacket. I hit near her thinking she was a cockroach and not taking time to aim, so she flew up into the air and started zig zagging towards me. Lined up the sights and stood my ground, waiting for her to cross my line of fire. The shot rang out with a roaring plastic click and she went spiraling downwards like a downed German fighter. She crashed on the stovetop and kept her wings buzzing, running across the stove like a runway, still intent on destroying me. Another clean shot sent her flying back against the coffee maker. She couldn't move well right now, though I double tapped her to make sure her wings were destroyed. I relocated her to a jar and watched her crawl around angrily for a while, her stinger hanging out with the tiniest drop of venom on it. you could see the entry holes on her thorax and abdomen.

The thrill of this experience cannot be matched- to have accidentally thrown yourself into combat with a dangerous foe and come out victorious. I keep her on my desk as a trophy.

The sights are pretty accurate, now I'm operating operationally in my house at all times.

>>2398675
...........................................
I desperately assume that's pic not related.

Aggro swarm is unusual too. If you're down near AHB area they may be partially africanized but they could just be mean bees, and since you're not getting wrecked just standing near them it's probably the latter. I have some pretty aggressive Italians, they get feisty with me and they rob the carni hives.

I don't think the camo version is the Lawn and Garden edition though, which is the 12ga to the 2.0's 20ga. I want to find a yellow jacket ground nest, set up a waspblind out of aggro range, get some camo and cheap domestic beer and sit there one afternoon popping yellowjackets like a true Murikan.
