Um... I'm not too sure where else to ask this but, could someone give me some advice about owning a Parakeet? Should I get a male or female, should I get two instead of one? I've never owned a bird before, so I'm a little clueless...
Been a while since I read up on budgies or birds in general, but I seem to recall that if you get one, it'll bond to you better, but will require more daily attention and interaction with you. Two birds will bond more closely to each other but will also keep each other entertained.
There should be plenty of budgie forums with stickied noob info around if /an/ isn't delivering.

Ahh, That's what I thought. I wouldn't want it to get lonely, so I'll try to look into getting two!
I also tried rummaging around with what google gave me, but I got different answers from different people.. (I.e. Sandpaper perches are good for birds, sandpaper perches are NOT good for them..)

No sandpaper perches! They will just scratch up the birds feet and hurt them.
Male and female you can't tell apart with 100% certainty unless you get them dna tested. Males seem to make more noise though. Females can become eggbound.

I kinda figured it might hurt them.. (I'll write that down for the shopping list)
And you can't? I read you could tell them apart from their noses.. Was that wrong too?

It's sort of true but again it's not 100% certain, and it doesn't work if the bird is too young.

Oh! I see... I guess I'll just have to ask when I go and look...?

You'll need a couple toys at least.
Decent sized cage
Minimum at 18x18x18 inches
Try to get 3 different kinds of perches in there. Natural wood is great, a rope perch is also good. I also give mine a "pedicure" perch, which is covered in a fine grit, fucker loves to grind his beak on it. Mine's about 11 years old now.
