Hey /an/, I'm a vet and bored.

Ask basic questions and I'll help guide. Can be general animal questions or specific animal questions.

*Cannot diagnose animals without appropriate exam and tests but can give you differentials of what could be wrong with your pet
>>
Would you operate on your own pet?
>>
>>2392867
I haven't needed to before but I would rather a colleague perform the surgery with myself assisting.
>>
How far in debt are you?
>>
>>2392877

Left vet school with ~233k in debt. I'm currently paying it off, but I graduated recently so I have barely made a dent in it.
>>
How do vets deal with people who want to euthanize their pet with a relatively easy curable problem? For instance, a minor U.T.I. or a cold.
>>
If an animal has obviously been abused by an owner, do you have the right to not give it back to them?
>>
>>2392930
>>2392932

These are tough situations with no easy answer.

>>2392930
For these people, you present the facts. If they want to euthanize their animal, you can offer alternatives (surrender to the hospital, shelter, rehoming, etc). As a veterinarian, I also reserve the right to NOT euthanize an animal but I also have to consider that the animal may live a worse fate if I don't-- ie owner tries to kill it themselves and do it wrong. It really is a case by case basis.

>>2392932
We can't really place a hold on their animal. The most I can do is document suspected abuse and report it to the authorities in hopes that the animal can be confiscated. Unfortunately, animals are still property.
>>
>>2392865
My friend has a cat that goes into heat every new and then. It's kinda creepy because she lurks about the house mewing loudly and striking "fuck me" poses. I guess she's calling out for a potential mate. Is there a solution for this?
>>
>>2392948
Nothing that doesn't involve unnecessary surgery. Be happy, it could be worse.
I had a cat that learned to open cupboards and she would intentionally go in and out, actually getting the doors to slam, while she was in heat. In the middle of the night. Paranoia was intense. She wanted to be let out to go fuck so she annoyed me and slammed cupboards 3 hours a night for weeks.
>>
>>2392865
>Hey /an/, I'm a vet and bored
Hi OP, I'm an astronaut.
>>
>>2392948
Spaying the cat.
>>
>>2392887
233k is a lot. Is it manageable? When do you think you will pay it off?
>>
>>2392865
Did you learn how to treat anything other than mammals in veterinary school? Did the offer classes on reptiles or other exotics?

There are vets on this board. Vet student here, in my last few years at Uni now, but fully intend to stick around once I graduate.

Know there's a chap who works at an abbittoir here too who is an EU vet.

>>2393331

We do almost every species. I'm in the middle of revision right now, and I've spent my entire day looking at bird feathers, reptiles shedding their skin, amphibians and fish. Needless to say one of my exams is on derm- but we've done everything from fish turtles to horses.
>>
>>2393225
It's manageable because I'm enrolled in those income based loan payments. I'll pay it off in approximately 17 years at this rate with this payment balance. There are multiple payment plans depending on loan:income ratio

>>2393331
At my old school it depends on your interests. We can pick any rotations we want- there is a base amount of each rotation you can choose and then you have a remaining X weeks and you can fill them with externships, alternative learning etc.
I filled mine with exotics, extra dermatology and ophthalmology, externships for internal medicine because you see all this in GP.
>>
>>2392865
How hard is it to be a vet? Is it true the US only allows 100 people to become a licensed vet each year? How impossible is it to have a hand in everything, like be an exotics, livestock, and cats/dogs?

I heard it's nigh impossible to be a vet so I gave up fairly early in life, but then when I went to college I met all these idiots who are going into vet school and I already know more than them without even trying. Now I'm reconsidering, seeing my competition.
>>
>>2393613
Hard? Extremely, not for the light hearted. A lot of people that go into the field have mental health issues or social issues for one so it's annoying to deal with. It's comparable to medical school or maybe a tad harder so if you want more money for the same effort and less debt--> do med school, I wish I did.
Every school has about 100-170 students graduating each year-- so no, no cap.
Well everyone has a strong suit, but we are all expected to know basics of every animal because our vet boards ask us about every main specie.

Yes, even in veterinary school there are tons of idiots as they accept them from lower universities due to grade inflation. there are also other kinds of idiots in veterinary school as I mentioned--> ie socially retarded, SJW, mental illness/depression, get stressed out easily and take it out on others, superficial clique bitches etc. It is also a female based profession. So about 5-10% will be males, of that 3/4s are gay.
Honest to god, I felt like I was the only well-adjusted individual.

No, it is not impossible. Any idiot can get in however not everyone can handle it or be a GOOD vet. I've met tons of horrible vets and veterinary students along the way. Sad, but true.
>>
>>2392865
I recently got my first hamster, he's very aggressive in the cage, but he's nice outside of the cage. I'm assuming a lack of space is the problem, am I correct?
>>
>>2393774
Aggressive as in attacks you?
The cage is more of a safe space for these animals so when they get rustled about in there they become very scared and can lash out--> aggression or self-harm (running into things).

I would suggest you train your hamster to come out of the cage on it's own by coaxing it with leafy greens. Once with you, feed it high reward greens (green lettuce, cilantro, parsley, some carrots).
You can also make a part of it's cage a safe zone you never enter.

If it is a Robo Hamster, they can be assholes all the time.
If space is something you think is an issue as you pointed it out, make more space for the little one.
>>
What did you do for undergrad?
>>
>>2393785

Anything works so long as you have the requirements of the school you want to go to.

I did Animal Sciences.
>>
>>2393794
That's what I'm in currently. What was your backup plan if vet school didn't work out?

>>2393778
Yeah, he'll actually chase my hand around the cage when I'm trying to change food/water/sand. I have a hatch on the cage and he'll leave if I leave it open. I think for space I'll make him a little play pen area as a new cage is not within my budget right now.
He's a campbell dwarf hamster. Looks just like pic
>>
>>2393796
Hmm, didn't have a real backup plan. I wanted to be a teacher. Still enjoy teaching volunteers too.

>>2393798
You could also put a fence up and keep him entertained with treats so he doesnt attakc you

Strange question here. I boarded my dog overnight and when he came back the skin on his testicles was shiny and looked burned. The skin peeled off and it was a bloody mess. It looked incredibly painful. My vet treated him with benedryl and antibiotics. (I had already given him aspirin so no steroids.)
We suspected it was from the no rinse disinfectant on the kennel floor. He's a young high strung Malinois and was probably pacing, barking and peeing the whole time too.
My dog had this same problem once before at a different kennel, but It wasn't as bad. (I had assumed it was from hot sand at the beach earlier that week.)
Do you think he would be ok if the kennel rinses the floor next time? I'm afraid to board him again.
I found this article and it looks like the same issue:
http://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/dogs-scrotums-burned-at-animal-shelter-by-cleaning-chemicals-former-employee-says-7836832
>>
>>2393823

I've seen this in dogs that have been hospitalized for a while.
it can be one of two things
1. Rinsing the run would help reduce contact irritation of your dogs testicles. Unfortunately, we don't know if they would do this.
2. Another possibility could be that your dog is licking it's testicles due to boredom. Malinois are very driven dogs as you may know. They can be driven to stereotypic behavior in new, non-stimulating environments.

You could provide diaper rash cream to help ease pain your Malinois is likely experiencing or if they allow you can leave some bedding there (towels, blankets, throws).

Ps- handsome dog.
>>
>>2393831
Thanks. They are quircky dogs. He eats bedding, although he did have a cot type bed in the kennel. Would diaper cream cause a problem if he licked it off?
>>
What do you suppose happened to my cat at the pound/his old home to make him the way he is?
He tries to put EVERYTHING that comes within 2 inches of his face in his mouth, usually pulling it in with his paw. this includes fingers. He has chew toys but I have to put it in front of him and hold it in my hand for him to use them. He's also a few pounds overweight. He's maybe 8 or 9 years old and had been at the pound (it's a cat sanctuary type thing but it's all indoors, cats are all allowed contact with each other except for FIV+, kittens, and ferals) for maybe 4 years. The workers there were unable to contact his previous owner for his medical history, and he had an infected tooth that needed to be pulled right before I got him, though before it was pulled he was still bitey.
>>
>>2393837
In hospital, we use desitin if you're looking for recommendation. Shouldn't be a big deal if they lick it off honestly.

>>2393842
sounds like your cat has PICA. These cats are typically cats weaned off too soon from their mothers, have non-stimulating environments, are high strung individuals and/or have a true OCD.
Treatment: Enrichment-- toys, vertical space, boxes. Address anxiety/stress-- another cat marking outside the house, tension within the house, too many animals in the household, no safe space for this cat, too few litter boxes.
Mild sedatives or anti-depressants help reduce anxiety and compulsive behaviors.
If it's not an issue (cat eating things and getting foreign bodies), I would say it's nothing to worry about.
>>
>>2393343
There are in fact. I'm also a vet student, just finished up my second year.
>>
>>2393771
Can you give a few examples of bad vets? Are they just dumb, or do they do morally questionable things? I'm currently going into microbiology because it's easy enough while sounding professional, but I'd love to do something with animals if I could. I admit all the vets I know are very smart but all these people in vet school are pants on head retarded and I feel like I could beat them, even if I'm not the best. My dream would be to work on military animals or the pets of military personnel

Also what is the difference between LVTs and vets? I know that a vet needs to be present to administer rabies (in my state a vet needs to be on the property but doesn't need to physically administrator it themselves, but the vet needs to sign off on it) but I've seen LVTs do neuter operations. Can LVTs operate if they don't make the initial incision? Or did that place just do some illegal shit? How much can an LVT help with an operation?
>>
>>2394026
Vets that claim heartworm doesn't exist. Vets that vaccinate cats on their lumbar muscles instead of designated leg areas (cats get vaccine reaction fibrosarcomas). Vets that misdiagnose the easiest diseases. Vets that refer for easily managed diseases.
I dont know if it's dumb, ignorance, or what. But some of these things are unbelievable.

Microbiology is a great major, it's not clinically applicable most of the time (unfortunately- unless you're doing cytology on ears/abscesses etc but yoou submit to a pathologist anyway)
in most schools you can try and get a military financed veterinary education---? theypay for everything if you serve with them for a couple of years, however it is highly competitive and your health record must be squeaky.

We call them RVT's here. RVT's are legally NOT allowed to perform anything that requires cutting tissue. Hence they CAN get cysto's on animals, they CAN catheterize things, they can vaccinate, they can puncture things but they cannot cut.
They should not be allowed to do procedures. They can help with very basic tasks but are LEGALLY NOT ALLOWED to surgically manipulate tissues at all.

What's a species a vet is likely to refuse to treat if brought to them? Insects and arachnids? Venomous snakes? An alligator? Is there some animal you'd nope away from?
>>
What's the ratio of small animal vets to large animal vets, and the demand for each.

Thanks for doing this, by the way!
>>
How to become vet? Ive always wanted to become one but due to stupid decisions i didnt take school seriously and just about finishing up my senior year (19 btw). Do i still have a chance?
>>
>>2392865
Is it true that dogs see in black and white? pls respond :3
>>
>>2392865
My half chihuhua/phalene is cool with most dogs but sometimes he is really aggressive to random dogs. I'd say for every 20 dogs he meets, he is a mad dick to one. Anything I can do about it? Also he is mean to bigger and nicer dogs, I dont like it.

Finally, I suck at googling and can't find any laws about owning a ram as a pet in Florida.
>>
>>2395020
Well it depends with what the veterinarian is comfortable with.
I would refuse fish and some reptiles as I don't know how to provide appropriate care for them and would refer you to a specialist.

>>2395071
About 70% small animal 15% large 5% equine 5% wildlife/exotics 5% pathology

>>2395214
Sure, go to community college or any college and do well. High school doesnt matter for vet shcool.

>>2395460
no. they see in shades of blue and yellow.

>>2395478
Not exactly. Some dogs don't like each other and that's that. For some reason corgi's hate my dachshund, but I can't do anything about it.
Just look to see any common denominator and avoid those dogs whether it be by look or temperament.
Lol I don't work in Florida. So no idea.
>>
Dogs have pack mentality, right? If so, am I the alpha? They all seem to respect me. Is there a beta? (I have 3 pits, 1 rotweiller, and one with no breed.)
>>
Kind of an odd question, but i dont know who else to ask. My cat started pooping on the floor a few months ago, after i bought my other cat special dietary food. They both eat it, but ive taken them off it for a time and she'll still shit on the carpet. I have multiple litterboxes, and she will only poop about a foot away from the litterbox. However, when i put tinfoil down she wont do it. Its really fucking annoying. pls ansr
>>
tell us about psychiatric disorders of animals
>>
I know this girl in community college right now who is planning on going to vet school. She is a huge advocate of feeding pets vegan diets, not just dogs but cats too. Do you think she will change her mind when she goes to vet school? Are there vets out there who seriously think feeding carnivores vegan is a good idea?
>>
Any idea how is it to be a vet technician or how are they?

I thought about being a vet once but realized I'm fairly retarded to go that far, but thought about training to be a vet tech instead.
>>
>>2396008
Depends if you act like an alpha or not. But since you're on a ching chong rune board asking us if your pets respect you, probably not.
>>
>>2396008
Not anymore than guinea pigs do. Maybe it's cause you're not a dick to them or you've met a lot of good doggos.

>>2396022
1. Move litter box to her new pooping location, should be solved.
2. any other changes in the household beyond food around the same time? (people, other animals, carpet cleanings etc etc)
3. hows her stool?
4. how is the other cat doing?

>>2396025
An example, border collies are highly likely to get stereotypic behaviors when understimulated (ie- eat rocks, chew shit they shouldn't) and they can do things like 'air biting' which is associated with incorrect wiring in their brains.
Cats that have FIC are typically highly stressed individuals- these cats should be given enrichment and in extreme cases, sedatives/SSRIs.

>>2396086
Depends on her school and her colleagues. My school berated individuals who feed grain free as animals are largely allergic to proteins, not carbohydrates. Only a small subset of a specific breed has true grain allergies. Cats should never be fed vegan diets as they develop DCM, she will be called an idiot (hopefully) if she even gets in (hopefully not).

>>2396236
It's tough labor for shit pay. Usually younger women with a high school mentality go into the field.

>>2396376
you're not well-versed in this, please stop.
>>
>>2396405
Ive tried moving it, she'll just poop in the area behind the litterbox. And no new h
changes, her stool is the same consistency, and my other cat will use the litterboxes like usual. My cats only 3, but i think she has some ''''mental issues'''' if that matters.
>>
>>2396442
I'd say take her to behaviorist.
She pees in the litterbox though?
>>
>>2396459
Correct, she just likes to poop, i guess. By behavioral problems i suspect she has 'twitchy cat syndrome,' shes also just very clingy and neurotic in general, and often rams her head into walls by accident.
She's a good cat, mostly.
>>

It sounds a little silly but here goes

Is it bad to boop my dog on the nose? I got a golden recently and it's just so goddamned cute that when it puts its head in my lap I just find it really fun to boop her little nose.

Obviously I'm not doing it hard at all and I always give her a good pet/scratch after but I want her to know it's affection not a telling off
>>
>>2396490

Nah if you don't do it hard and she's not startled/adversely reactive, you're fine.

I slap my dog's butt all the time and he doesn't care, I also grab my dogs by the muzzle and kiss them almost violently but they love it.
>>
How do I make friends with my new mouse? Little bitch is scared of me.
>>
>>2396896
Not a vet, maybe your best bet is to associate yourself with care. Feed the bugger by hand until it gets used to it. Then pet it as it feeds.
>>
How do you help a dog take a shit when it can barely use it's hind legs?
>>
>>2397229
For paraplegic animals, they typically have issues keeping feces inside. What you can do is ask a veterinarian for lactulose to help the animal defecate easily by increasing GI motility or feed the animal fiber (pumpkin) to help movement within the GI tract. As for manual manipulation, you would have to try to isolate the feces in the abdomen and try to milk it out without hurting the animal or provide an enema into the anus.
I suggest you go to a veterinarian so they can teach you how to do all of these things.

>>2396896
this anon, >>2397220, is correct. Whenever you handle them, offer high value treats and handle every day for at least 5-10 minutes.
>>
>>2397229
do not use over the counter enemas as they can hurt the animal.
We typically use warm water and sterile lube.
Cisapride is another usable drug (if your animal does not have megaesophagus, otherwise it is contraindicated).
>>
hi! i work at a pet store and i adopted a mouse from our sick room who's had what we believe essentially is a chronic ear infection.

i've had him for quite some time now, he just turned a year old. his ear infection is still present, sometimes worse sometimes better. i treat it with cleaning him daily, and antibiotic ointment. but lately he's been sitting on the edge of for example his food bowl, hunched over. i know this is a sign of a URI, but is there anything I can do? his only other symptom is that he's been less active lately, but is otherwise normal.

i just want to know if there's anything at home i can do for him for the possible URI, and if there's anything else for the ear infection.

his name is Pal.

My cat for the past few months has been licking the hair off his belly and legs.

The skin beneath is pink and healthy, and unlike animals with hair loss due to skin irritation, he doesn't make it bleed or itch.

I thought it is likely anxiety. But he doesn't act anxious, there are no other pets in the home to disturb him, and he is left alone at most 8 hours a day. I also have plenty of toys and kitty type puzzle treat things to entertain him.

He is alone though. But in the almost 8 years I've owned him the lack of companionship hasn't bothered him before.
>>
>>2397362
Take it to a vet. Animals don't typically get over URI, it will need oral antibiotics AND IT WILL DIE WITHOUT TREATMENT IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES.
Why do you think it has an ear infection.
In the future, he should have adequate ventilation (cage) with carefresh/paper bedding (avoid wood shavings).

>>2397368
Is it on flea prevention? If not, do this.
It is also possible that animals lick certain areas due to underlying pain or irritation.
I'd suggest to take it to your vet for bloodwork (cbc, chem at the least).
>>
>>2397364
he's a cutie anon, take to a vet pls.
>>
>>2397371
Okay. He needs a dental soon anyway, I'll ask yo do it then. Thanks for the prompt response.

No he is not on flea medications, but we don't really have fleas out here as much. Plus he is 100% indoors on the 3rd floor, and I know what fleas look like. But with an allergy all it takes is one flea bite, so I'll ask my vet about their opinion on flea population.

I am also allergic to topical flea meds like Frontline 2 and Advantix. Original Frontline doesn't make my face swell, however. I don't know what substance in it does that.

When I used to work for a vet, there was some supposed new medication like Capstar but monthly that was going to be released. But that was before I quit and went to uni. Are their decent flea controls that are oral instead of topical?

Again, appreciate the prompt response.
>>
>>2397377
Capstar is typically for a flea infestation to kill fleas fast, not typically used for flea prevention (it, in theory, doesn't last a month).

Revolution is fantastic for cats, but is also a topical unfortunately yet it is alcohol based and will dry within the day. Bravecto works, Cheristin, Vectra. Oral meds include comfortis.

I am not aware of any new monthly medications unless you mean Bravecto (newish)

Thanks for acknowledging the one flea bite thing. If you start seeing red welts on your cat or feel small bumps on it's skin-- those are very indicative of flea allergy.
>>
>>2397379
Comfortis, that was it. I think the vet was starting to get samples when I quit.

What is your opinion on it?

The vet I worked for thought Revolution (at least when it first came out early 2000s) was decent for fleas, but garbage for heartworm in dogs. Was she wrong, or has the med changed?

>red welts...bumps
That's the thing. I looked him up and down and even parted his fur, but didn't find raised skin or red irritation. It was just hairless. He does groom those spots a lot, and often I'll try to distract with play.

Should I ask for a skin scrape too? Could it be fungal?
>>
>>2394698
>Vets that claim heartworm doesn't exist.
lmao what the fuck
>>
>>2397384
>>2397384
I really am an advocate of revolution in cats as you don't have to pill them, it's great coverage and absorbs quickly. Dermatology professors at m school say it's the bees knees for cats and Fleas.

I've used it on my personal dogs and don't mind it but I now use oral flea meds (sentinel) because I don't have active flea infestations on them, it covers some intestinals, they arent allergic to fleas, and they love eating.
The likelihood of Revolution not working in dogs is probably due to user error- people bathe dogs after or let them go into bodies of water.

Most fungal infections on cats present on the face region. Mites are more common in younger animals than your older kitty. and if it hasnt gone outside or wasn't recently acquired from a shelter, I would say mites is out. But if you want to cover your bases, sure.

Yeah those are for severe flea allergic cats.

>>2397392
yeah hollistic vets and shit or they dont believe in heartworm protection
>>
What's a good dog flea treatment?
I'm a poorfag but I heard some can make your dog sick and even kill them, don't want that.
Hartz ultraguard for example, I hear is bad, so I should definitely not get that right?
>>
>>2397229
My old shepherd had degenerative myelopathy and fecal incontinance. Her back end slowly bacame paralyzed.
Here's what worked for me. Get a paper towel and wet it with cold water. Hold it on your dog's anus and after a few minutes they should poop. You can a towel as a sling under your dog's belly/hips to help keep them from falling.
>>
>>2397837
Not a vet, but the active ingredient in Frontline Original is Fipronil. Go to Target or Walmart and get a generic flea treatment with only Fipronil as the active ingredient.
If you're only worried about fleas, use once it every three months. If you're around ticks you must use it once a month. If you have multiple dogs, look up the mL dossage online, buy the extra large dog size, measure it with a needle-less syringe and you can treat multiple dogs from one tube.
It doesn't cover as many flea life stages as the Frontline Plus so it's a good idea to vacuum your house regulary and empty your vacuum in an outdoor trash.
>>

>berated individuals who feed grain free
I get this with dogs, but aren't cats obligate carnivores beyond whatever grass they chew up and throw up? I haven't seen any vet backlash against the grain free trend, I thought it was a good thing in general. Details?
>>
>>2398663
Because Science Diet and Purina teach vets companion animal nutrition.

Which is why you get strange logic about animals being allergic to protein, grain free being better for dogs than cats (what? Most vets, even those who went to school with this type of education state the opposite being true), and the endless pushing of the food products. Prescription formulas of those food encouragement is fine, but when another vet wants me to switch to the basic science diet or Purina One, I take my business elsewhere.

What is bizarre is that these veterinary schools have solid livestock animal nutrition courses.
>>
>>2397837
If the dog currently has fleas, capstar is pretty good at killing them asap.

>>2398663
Yes theyre obligate carnivores because of they need taurine. If the diet has taurine in it, they should be fine. Taurine comes from meat.

>>2398744
Not true, no one from those companies teaches us. We are taught by board certified nutritionists. Purina, Royal Canin, and Hill's are used as they make medical diets for animals with specific needs and are scientifically tested to help these animals (wow science actually works?).
Again, no. Grain free is not proven to be better for dogs.

"basic" diets are seen as better because the companies actually do research on their product to see if it has any negative effects (testing animals/actual research), they are sold at a wider scale and thus any issues will be caught faster (here's looking at Blue Buffalo for their mistake), and are typically inexpensive for the average pet owner. If you want your bougie botique brand dog food and swear it makes your dog a new animal, sure whatever i dont give a fuck. But if you recently switched to it and your animal gets sick, I will be suspicious and don't give me your grain free shit for wanting to switch your dog with a fucking kidney disease onto Hill's or Purinas KIDNEY DIETS scientifically proven to slow down the progression of kidney disease.
>>

to be more in depth, i don't think veterinarians care about it too much.
I personally dont give a fuck, but when people start using it like it's a fucking religion and how other dog foods are trash is when I get annoyed. Especially when the animal has a food allergy. Food allergies STATISTICALLY are due to proteins like chicken for dogs rather than things like corn or wheat. So that's how I knock it out first- novel protein diet (which typically has a novel carb source as well- ex potatoes) especially if owners do not want additional diagnostics. If you want to get fancy we can send out blood or do an intradermal skin test to ID allergens your animal is allergic to.
if your animal has a condition where a scientific diet is out there that can decrease signs or slow progression and you don't want to try it because it is not carb free, I will get annoyed and refer you to a nutritionist to make your own diet that will fit your dog and perceived views.

the reasoning that i have about why people care so much about their dog's food is because that's the only thing they can control in their animals lives and make it seem like theyre good pet owners.

I don't give my pets RC, Purina, Hill's, Alpo etc because they like fishy diets and Nulo makes a pungent one that they enjoy. That's my only reasoning.

And fuck all those owners that say "I don't know why my dog's fat, we ony feed it 1/2 cup once a day" and this thing looks like a damn LOAF OF BREAD. YOURE NOT FOOLING ANYONE

end rant, sorry.

Actually, most vets agree that carbs and proteins are equal causes for food allergies, except one source:
Tuft.

How about that?
"hundreds of thousands of dollars a year funding university research and nutrition courses at every one of the 27 US veterinary colleges. Once in practice, vets who sell Science Diet and other premium foods directly pocket profits of as much as 40%" (Parker-Pope, T. 1997. For You, My Pet. The Wall Street Journal. 3 November 1997. In Lonsdale, T. 2001. Raw Meaty Bones. p266).

Nice one, but I'm pretty sure things change over a course of 20 years

"The search for, and review and analysis of the best evidence available as of January 16, 2015 suggests that the most likely food allergens contributing to canine CAFRs are beef, dairy products, chicken, and wheat. The most common food allergens in cats are beef, fish and chicken."

I took in a pregnant stray cat and everything is going great. Today seems to be the day she is going to start labor, she's panting heavily and nesting, grooming excessively etc.

The only problem is that she is not very good at grooming herself at all, and at the moment there is a huge poop smear on her anus and vagina. I've tried to wipe it off, but she really hates that and I've barely gotten any of it off.

Would the poop negatively impact her birth? I think I might leave it, and just gently clean any feces off of the kittens.
>>
>>2399866
It really shouldnt unless for some unimaginable reason you decide to introduce something into her vagina that is poop smeared. Dogs and cats dont typically get uterine infections like horses and cows might.
>>
Do you have any tips on how to get vet hours as an undergraduate?
>>
Have you ever had someone come in with a pet that they tried to euthanize themselves? I hear horror stories about that sometimes.
>>
I have a friend that has a cat and two dogs (boggles) and when me and a couple friends came over all the animals were obviously more stimulated than they normally would be and the cat started chasing and biting its own tail. The owner thought it was a novel behavior. Was this most likely a stress or anxiety reaction? The dogs also bark super loudly like right next to the cat tower they have but I don't actually know how that effects cats. Cat also likes to play by biting unexpectedly. Doesn't seem to draw any blood though.

I've moved to a heavily-wooded area so I finally need to start using flea/tick prevention regularly. Before, the area I lived in had such a low chance of fleas that it wasn't worth it. My dog came to me with fleas and I got rid of them without any medications/chemicals/bombs because he was so young at the time I didn't want to hurt him accidentally.

I'm terrified of side-effects. Currently we have Advantix II, but we're on the last dose of that and it's time to buy more. My dog has been okay with it so far, but I know a side-effect can pop up at any time no matter how well the dog was doing on a medication previously. I read horror stories all the time about dogs that suddenly got seizures, burns, etc and it terrifies me.

I'm mostly concerned about ticks rather than fleas--what's the safest tick preventative out there? What has the smallest rate of side effects, and the least dangerous side effects?
>>
>>2392865
What sort of veterinary medicine do you specialize in?
>>
>>2401115
Ask your local veterinary clinic to be a veterinary assistant or volunteer.

>>2401125
No, luckily no.

>>2401215
Likely, yes. Beagles (i assumed thats the breed you meant) normally bark that often.
Play biting in cats is because they weren't taught not to bite hands or the owner plays with them with her hands.

>>2401225
Side effects are very minimal in most flea and tick medications if the animal is larger- more concern should be placed in toy breeds.
If your animal has sensitive skin, I would suggest an edible flea/tick med (nexgard, trifexis, sentinel, bravecto, simpatica). If they have GI upset regularly over little things, I suggest a topical (revolution- alcohol based). If Gi and skin issues, bravecto and nexgard are preferred.

60 pound dog cracked/broke her nail through the middle and I can see blood in the crack.

She doesn't limp, but will land on it wrong while playing fetch and she looks like she trips.

What's the best way to go about letting it heal? I was thinking no heavy excercise like fetch for a while, and maybe trying to trim that nail back as far as I can without getting near the quick.

I have 5/6 year old female chihuahua mixed breed. Since yesterday she's been acting a bit weird. She been acting a bit slower and weaker like she can't get up as fast as she usually does and when she sits still she looks like she's shaking a bit. It seems to fluctuate between getting better and getting worse. Sometimes she'll be acting almost completely normal moving around at her usual pace not acting weak but the shaking remains.

Hi.
Have 16 year old family dog (name; Varg) and we've decided to euthanize her tomorrow. Her health has deteriorated so much that we decided it'd be for the best.
She has trouble getting up, has some form of dementia that's become increasingly noticeable these last few days, pants a lot, sleeps a lot, is probably in pain, drinking a lot more water lately..
We simply don't want to let her deteriorate further into greater pain and dementia and let her pass onto the next life etc..

The thing I'm wondering, would it be unreasonable for me to ask the vet (coming home to us) if I could be the one to give her the needle Like, if the vet would insert it into the vein and I'd be the one to push the syringe contents into her)? Varg is very dear to me and I feel strongly inclined to do so.

Would this be a reasonable request?
>>
>>2401993
I wholly understand why you would want this, so in that sense it's not at all unreasonable.

But I think the vet would say no, just because it's a liability issue to let someone untrained handle a procedure like that with their equipment, etc. So I doubt they would agree to it, unfortunately.

Not OP, by the way.
>>
>>2401997
I suppose. I get that.
I will still ask though.

that's really good to know about bigger dogs/less concern. I'll keep that in mind.

>revolution
>do not apply if dog is already taking a heartworm medication

dang. my guy is already on heartgard. guess we'll stick with advantix II until the heartgard runs out at the end of the year. it looks like revolution would be more cost effective though since I wouldn't have to do a heartworm medication in addition to a flea medication. thanks!

>>
>>2401569
Your dog will probably be too painful to let you cut it. If anything, leave it alone and you can ask for pain medications from your vet however after about a couple of days- it's unnecessary.

>>2401636
Shaking/trembling in animals can be seen as pain- can be in the abdomen. You should take her to a veterinarian.

>>2401993
No, it really is not a reasonable request especially if the veterinarian does not know you well enough. Euthanasia solution is misused already (suicides) and only veterinarians can administer it. >>2401997
is right.

>>2402064
>>2402066
It has an interesting background...
So back when farmers dewormed their animals with ivermectin, collies (main hearding dogs) would like it up and come in with neuro toxicities. This lead the thought that collies are more sensitive to ivermectin/selamectin. But keep in mind that Ivermectin to horses/livestock is a lot more concentrated. It's been seen that collies are more sensitive to processing ivermectin. However overdoses of ivermectin are not seen when appropriate doses are given to collies. You can talk to your proper veterinarian (as they have to prescribe revolution to you because of HW) and what they suggest. But I doubt it would be an issue to your dog-- make sure not to overdose or you can give revolution every 5-6 weeks instead of 4 weeks (it is still effective if you're late for up to 2 weeks).

Here's what I tried writing on /b/.
hey!
how's it going?

fags over at /an/ aren't responsive so I thought that I'd try my luck with you lot.

My dog, (pic related, above) is sick. Dunno what's wrong with him but he has been vomiting since Thursday evening and now he is half unresponsive and foaming at the mouth. He hasn't eaten anything for the past two days but he has been drinking water. I suspect that he might have rabies, but I'm not sure because he hasn't been in contact with other dogs, but he is also not vaccinated, so...
I don't know wtf to do, ,it's 19:33 where I am, vets aren't available until Monday morning. I'm afraid that he isn't going to make it, rabies or not.
My other dog is vaccinated but dunno how long it's been, and I've been playing with the doggo previously mentioned, needless to say that I'm now worried for myself. Atm, I've just locked him up, it's eating my heart out, but you wouldn't understand unless you know the full story behind it.
Foaming is now barely visible, if at all. I now gave him metoclopramide and he seems alright he moves around a bit but he still doesn't eat.

>no vets are open :(((

this shit always gets me. you should have taken him to the vet on Friday at the latest if you knew all the vets in your area were magically closed on the weekends. you also should have vaccinated your damn dog.

>it's eating my heart out, but you wouldn't understand unless
no, I know the full story. you or your family got dogs and neglected them until it was too late. that's the full story.

>I gave him metoclopramide

why? do you know what vomiting is? vomiting is the body's defense against poisons and foreign objects (barring motion sickness which is clearly not the problem here).

get off of 4chan and take your dog to a vet that is open. there is such a thing as an emergency vet. go.
>>
>>2403666
>you should have taken him to the vet on Friday
Told my sister to take him, and also thought about it but it was fine until this morning, the only symptom it showed was loss of appetite
>all the vets in your area were magically closed on the weekends
Excuse me for not having the privilege of living in a developed country where dogs are a major part of life. I'm from Ethiopia m8, there are only two private veterinaries and a single gov' owned one, and all of them are closed until Monday morning. I know this because I gave them a call.
>you also should have vaccinated your damn dog
It's not mine, ever since my doggo died when I was 13/14, I purposely avoided dogs so as to not get hurt again. Both of them are my older sister's but she doesn't take care of them, like everything else about her, her love for them is superficial, I'm the one that feeds, washes and take care of them but I don't get too close. I was against the idea of saving these dogs, but she insisted on having them. Tbh, I forgot if it was vaccinated or not.
>no, I know the full story. you or your family got dogs and neglected them until it was too late. that's the full story.
fuck you
>why? do you know what vomiting is?
I do, but the vet I talked to is the one that recommended it.
I can't take it anywhere as of now, I'll have to wait until Monday morning. I'm preparing for the worse, have been ever since she brought it home. I'm a very fragile person, can't deal with loss, so I mostly avoid giving affection and purposely distance myself from it.You wouldn't understand.
>>
>>2403658
What i would say it could be that the animal has ingested something it shouldnt have and is now blocked.
He is very unlikely to have rabies unless he plays with raccoon, foxes/coyotes, or deer.

You really shouldnt have given him metoclopramide. If he has a foreign body, it will make it worse.

FYI- NEVER PREMEDICATE YOUR ANIMALS IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THEM
>>
>>2403684
If you take him in, I suggest a CBC/CHEM/spec CPL and xrays of the abdomen as a full work up
CBC- identifies any infection/inflammation
CHEM- checks on organ function
spec CPL- id's pancreatitis
Xrays- check for any foreign bodies or abnormal gut

My pug looks like she has irritated eyes. Her right eye is lazy and from certain angles there is a blueish color in her iris. Input would be nice thank you.
>>
>>2403848
the blue on the iris can be due to nuclear sclerosis (a harmless degeneration of the lens) or cataracts (caused by diabetes).

A veterinarian should perform a cbc, chem, ua to rule out diabetes or they can dilate the eyes and do a fundic exam- if they can see the fundus your dog has nuclear sclerosis, if not- cataracts.
Not sure what you mean by lazy or irritated eyes, a picture would help.

As a younger dog, it's unlikely to be nuclear sclerosis.
Get her checked out for glucose

As for the irritation in her eyes (I'm guessing vascularized sclera?) it could be normal for her, or if you have her on a collar+leash, I suggest putting her on a harness instead--> dogs eyes can get red from pulling a lot
Good luck!

I recently found glass shards of "new placentyne" that my sister threw out of the window. Might be that, but it might also be something that neighbors, my maids or someone else purposely gave to the dog. Neighbors often feed your dog rat poison to shut him up if he is very vocal, same goes for pedestrians who do the same if they intend on robbing your house. And as for my maids, they hate taking care of dogs, so...
There are no raccoons, nor are there any foxes or deers. Rabies is now out of the question since he rarely goes out despite it not being vaccinated.
I'm thinking that he mihjt have hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, or parvo. What should I be doing to treat him until we get it to the vet?

g'news you pseudovets.
i've taken the pup to the vet and he has parvovirus. vet gave him iv and two shots of cocktail, told me to come back tomorrow and the day after for further treatment. costs me $70.
he said that it would be fine but although doggo has since gained a little strength. i'm worried that the disease might be advanced.
here's hopping that it makes it.
this is it this morning. looks ghastly, i know. i feel somewhat partially responsible, but like i said before you lot wouldn't understand. moral of the story, doggos shouldn't be the victim of someone else's feud.

>>2404192
The brown in her eyes is called Melanosis and it's caused by pugs not being able to close their eyes fully. To prevent it from progressing (the melanin can blind them, ask your vet for sterile eye lubricant and apply them while she sleeps
>>
>>2404162

>>
>>2406373

Expect that animals you saw yesterday may not be there the next day because of euthanasia. Expect loud working conditions (Bring ear plugs). Expect some people to be incompetent at working with animals.
>>
>>2406373
Not OP, but I've worked at a shelter and frankly you're going to be miserable unless you REALLY like dogs. You will be cleaning extremely noisy-assed areas where multiple dogs have shat in their kennels overnight and finger-painted feces everywhere. They will jump all over you, mouth you, and otherwise be extremely fucking obnoxious because many of them have no manners (which is part of what gets them put in a shelter in the first place) and dogs start getting kennel crazy after a while. You will get poop all over your shoes and clothes and in your hair. You'll clean a kennel to spotless perfection, then put the dog back in and watch them immediately shit or piss all over it.

Good luck.
