My parents bought a Shiba in 2001 or 2002 maybe, long before The Meme happened and boy oh boy it was shitty after that.
Fucking children walking up and grabbing at my damn dog without a word.
Shibas are super jumpy around people they don't know. I've had 2 and fostered a couple more since then, and it hasn't gotten any better.

It's not that they're shitty so much as you really need to know what you're getting into. My sister talked my Mom into getting an Airedale Terrier a long time ago thinking that that they were just big Scottie dogs, and it went about as well as you might imagine (i.e., like a slow motion train wreck).

Now after years of living without a dog they're thinking of getting another one, but this time I fucking insisted that they do their research beforehand.

This. Shibas make american shitbulls look like good babysitters. They have a strong instinct to kill helpless animals like human babies and children, and will attack any other animal regardless of size, especially other shibas. Your average shiba owner loses at least a couple fingers or toes. Shibas are actually born white, the orange-red coloration is residual staining from their habit of rolling in the blood of their victims.

Oh my gosh. I was in this store (Petland) that sells puppy mill dogs with fake pedigrees to see how sick the puppies were firsthand. I overheard the sales associate talking to a man with a seven-year-old girl who was asking about the shiba puppies. He told her, "Oh yes, our shibas are great beginning dogs for children!" He quoted them $1500 for one. Couldn't believe what I was hearing. I got escorted out after I started taking pictures of one of the husky puppies with a bloated belly (I think it had worms) going for 2500.
