Are they interesting to keep or just pretty looking? I want a girl with personality.
I had a crayfish as a pet when I was a kid. I must have been, what, eight?
I had kept and bred crayfishes of uncertain species. I bought 10 young ones in Moscow as "Cuban blue crayfish", but these ones appeared dwarf ones of, maybe, Cambarellus genus. The body length had been about 50 mm at adult ones. They bred easily and digged holes under halves of clay pots. So, no individuality at them (not like dogs, cats or even cichlids). But theirbehaviour is rather interesting and "alien" compared to fishes. Of course, they exterminated almost all plants, except for Cryptocoryne lutea (another cryptocoryne species had been eaten). They also exterminated Compsopogon algae totally - great benefit.

They're very entertaining, definitely much more so than fish.
I saved a crayfish from a boil at my university. She ended up only living three days. I think they had her on ice so she'd be calmer and I couldn't get her home in water quick enough.
She was a very strong girl, she will be missed.

Still better than being boiled alive.
I saved this crayfish from a batch of feeder fish at a pet store. I don't know the exact species, I can only guess. I've had her for two months now, in her own 5-gallon tank. She's only about 2 inches long so she has plenty of room. She has molted twice now, about ready to have another I think.

Very interesting. They are typically skittish at first but once settled in their environment they are very bold. Mine often jumps at the glass and holds her claws up when she sees me near the tank. She explores every new thing added to her tank immediately, and she likes to climb and seems to play on the filter flow sometimes.
