Dogs are an obvious one as they have been bred and evolved specifically to be human companions but what are some other perhaps lesser known animals that are well suited as pets? What I mean by this is that they are comfortable and happy living in a home for, whether it be in a tank or other.

Rats, people view them as destructive pests because of wild rats, but they're incredibly social and adaptable.

Pretty much all of the long-domesticated species do well in captivity (being bred for the purpose helps) and range from relativity common to somewhat uncommon but not unheard of in the household. Cattle, horses and yaks are too big for most yards unless you have some spare acres for them to pasture at. Goats, sheep, pigs etc. have been kept at low density in small plots for many thousands of years (check your local ordinances though). Bees are a good choice if you like honey. Most of the domestic birds can readily take to a household setting provided you're willing to deal with the shit, even waterfowl (which do not require a backyard pond though they like it). The mink and the ferret are both kept with great success in captivity. The hedgehog, the fancy rodents, and the rabbit are all common in the household. There are small donkey breeds kept as backyard pets in acre or so plots.

No matter how much it triggers your typical dog/catfag that people just aren't buying dogs or cats as much these days, there are a lot of species that humans keep as pets in this era. So there's a lot of support floating out there if you want to branch out of the typical.

Ferrets are interesting case. Lots of people label them as "exotic pets" when they've been domesticated for a couple thousand years.

Roosters.
You can even teach them tricks like a dog and housetrain them. Absolutely need a bunch of hens though, otherwise they'll go crazy during adolescence.
