how bad is it for a dog to live with no eyes? not just blind but no eyes at all.

shes only 4 years old, still acts like a puppy so energetic, not like my older dogs that went mostly blind but could still see shapes and spent most of the day relaxing.

is it considered bad to put her down because of it? i feel so sad thinking of this lively energetic pup not able to see.

anyone have fully blind dog?

Dogs adapt really well to problems like that.

even without kids and trips? we live in the city, no vehicle, and her biggest issue is that even with her eyes she cannot have fun wtihout interaction. If I'm not home or not playing wtih her, she is simply laying down. i tried getting toys and puzzle toys and toys that move on their own but she doesn't know how to play unless im playing with her, and i worry that being blind will worsen this.

im just so scared and sad.

Her being blind doesn't mean you can't interact with her. She's still got your voice and smell and she can still pick things up or whatever. There's lots of online resources about blind dogs that you can look up, it might take a while to learn all the tricks and figure out what she prefers but once you do you'll be fine. The main challenge is making sure every corner of the house is either safe or inaccessible.

i know i can still interact with her, but whats the quality of life for a dog who is alone 8 or more hours a day and is blind?
>>
>>2379009
If you really think she's not living a quality life with you then try to find a rescue in your area for disabled dogs. Or some organization that takes in disabled dogs for education purposes.

If your dog is alone for 8+ hours a day every day then you need to get/ask/hire someone to check on it and walk it regardless of whether it's blind or not. If you haven't done that then consider this whole situation an incentive to start doing it. It'll help her a lot.

Eyesight isn't really important to dogs. If you leave on the TV while she's alone, she mostly enjoys it for the sounds.

Your OP kind of implied she's never had eyes- how can she miss what she's never had?

So long as she isn't forced into situations where she'd need vision, she isn't skittish and easily frightened, and you keep her eye sockets clean, I doubt her blindness is too much of an issue.

My dog usually doesn't want to play with toys unless I'm playing with him (or at least get him worked up about THE BALL and unleash him), so that doesn't sound unusual at all.

As long as her tail is wagging and she has puppy-like energy, she's almost certainly a happy girl. Does she get excited when you come home, when she hears/smells dog food? Then she's fine.

I do understand your worries though. I gotta hug my doggo for a minute here.

Honestly dogs can make both of their ears face forward. If you put 2 devices that emit a quiet clicking sound a couple times a second on each shoulder, both with a different pitch, it might be even better than sight

This.

>your OP implied she never had eyes

sorry, no, she has both eyes, one has a hole in it right now and its just leaking out all her eye fluids and the doc says it definitely needs to get removed. im taking her to a dog eye specialist at 3pm but the current vet believes that that one will recommend removing both eyes as that ones infected and getting a hole too and the antibiotics arent helping.

im worried about her trying to adjust to life after the fact cuz even the vet says that with her being 5 years old shed have a long life of blindness ahead of her and not like the old dogs hwo just sleep all day.

She might be disoriented for the first few days but she'll get used to it really fast as long as you accommodate her. It's not very different from dogs who have a leg or even multiple legs amputated.
>>
>>2379049

so she'll be fine just being home alone for her life?

My daughters fully blind dog.
It's really not a big deal, especially if you have another dog. Her dog went blind over the course of two years, so I'm sure it's not the same as being born blind.
