I didn't really want to make a whole thread just for this so I'll turn it into a general. Post your cats, post other people's cats, talk about cats, bitch about cats, blogpost, whatever.

I have two cats that I got from a shelter when they were 6 months old. They were fed solely Science Diet dry food since they were weaned (I know because I work at said shelter) and when I got them, they would only eat Science Diet dry. No wet food, no treats, no table scraps, nothing. Only that one particular brand of dry food. After a few months of putting up a hunger strike, 5 years later I got them to eat a bit of Blue Buffalo dry with their Science Diet, and after an even longer strike they will now eat Natural Balance canned food (but if I switch to any other flavor or brand they snuff it again, and the hunger strike starts all over).

My issue is, on the recommended feeding on the canned food, they seem to be getting super skinny. During their hunger strike I could feel their ribs, but after a few months of only eating canned food, I can visibly see curves on my cats. I tried giving them over the recommended feeding, but now I have to buy this food 2x a week because I'm actually emptying the stores of it (I guess it's not a common food) and can only get like 10 cans at a time. My question is, is there some better way to do this? I would like them to eat canned only if possible, but would feeding them dry half the day to cut down on cans really be that bad for them compared to canned only? I've also heard you could get monthly cat food deliveries - has anyone had experience with that? Is it reliable?

My cats eat Wellness and Taste of the Wild canned food. They prefer varieties that are like chunks in gravy over the Natural Balance brick of paté. I encourage the two girls to eat on demand by feeding them together from the same (wide) plate. This way they are pressured to eat or they know they'll go hungry.

Was the cat on your property?
Was the dog on their property?
Are you another example of a cat "owner" not taking care of their responsibilities?
Are you trying to blame someone else for the consequences of your actions?
Is this bait?

That sounds like a pretty bad idea honestly, feeding cats from the same plate in hopes that they will try to out compete each other.

How do cats get sick from lilies, specifically Jade Plants? Do they have to eat a leaf or is it the pollen?
>>
>>2375675
Pretty sure they need to consume the plant to get sick. And usually they need to eat quite a bit for most species

Have any of you dealt with a grieving cat before?
>2 adult cats, 2 toy dogs, german shepherd
I only own one cat, it tolerates but doesnt like the second cat, and avoids the toy dogs. It used to lay with the old shepherd a lot, but it also keeps to itself aswell.

The elder german shepherd had to be put down a couple days ago.

I guess I didnt realize just how much my cat loved the german shepherd, because she keeps going over to where his bed was, smelling the floor, rolling around and audibly moaning/sighing. Then going off and hiding...
I know she wouldnt give one shit if one of the other animals were gone.

Ive been giving her love, and she is still giving love back to me, but you can tell she is feeling sad.
I dont know what im supposed to do for her.

Recently moved to the big city with my two-year-old neutered male. He was an inside/outside cat in a suburban neighborhood with low traffic. Now we live on a busy avenue with constant traffic. The Lil's guy has adjusted well enough, and we have a wonderful back courtyard with big ol' trees and lots of ferns. I'm not worried about him running off since we've been here 9 days. I am worried about the stupid shit getting run over or bullied by neighborhood kids. He's scared shitless of the fast moving cars on the avenue, though, but I hate to think of him crossing that road. I take him outside when I smoke for a half hour or so, but he wants to go back to his old free roaming life style, and annoys me about it constantly. What should I do?
>>
>>2376215
>What should I do?
Let him outside. Just be a responsible owner and make sure he's supervised to where he can't be a danger to himself or other animals, and not a nuisance to your neighbors as well.

Bring him out on a leash. Look into leash training so you can have him out with you while you smoke. Or you can look into cat proofing the fence, or one of those cages to put outside. If your cat is bugging you to go outside, you need to set up a routine. Like the cat goes outside after dinner or something. That way he knows what to expect when. Cats fucking love routine.
>>
guys can someone help me with my cat?My mother brought a stray kitten from a woman in rural area near our town, it was born in a barn or something, now the thing is its already past 3 years at this point and this cat is nowhere to being domesticated.

He detests being touched, no head pats, back scratching, when picked up he literally pushes away with his paws and when my sister tries to kiss it on the head while holding him, he looks like a rape victim. Will he break one day and start to accept petting or should i just accept that he is completely different from cats i ve seen on YT and shit (which i do and leave him be)?

Also does anyone know best toys for cats you can buy or make?I have a 'fishing rod' stick i play with him but isnt there any toy he can play by himself? He definitely needs more move, tho is not overweight or anything, either stationary in one place or gets HYPERactive, running, scratching, biting, etc.

There's a ton of DIY toys you can make, but not too many you could make that is in itself interactive. There are these laser lights that you can get that go around by itself, and these weird ball things in pic related. You can look up DIY toys. As far as him being feral, there is not much you can do. Just try to keep him comfortable, don't force interaction, and get him on a routine so he can become a little more confident. Maybe try reading up on cat behavior and operant conditioning to try and get your cat to tolerate handling. I recommend Jackson Galaxy for cat behavior and training. I know he looks like a faggot but he knows what he is talking about.

>>
>>2377448
It's definitely not all the same. There are definitely tiers of cat food, ranging from shit to great. The best cat foods are always wet; there's no health benefit to be feeding dry food to cats. If you just want to feed a stray cat though, any cat food would do. Same with treats. If you want to go healthy, look into HavePaws. It's natural, no bi-product. The guy who runs it used to talk about making a cat food company on here before he did it.

Never heard of it but I took a look at it. Looks to be high in meat, no by product, no grains, contains sufficient taurine, no sugars. The only thing I could complain about is carrageenan (may cause cancer), but at this point it's pretty nit picky. I also don't understand why they feel the need to put shit in there like veggies and flowers, but it makes up less than 5% of the food. Usually you will see companies add non-meat shit (often grains and starches) as filler for food because it's much cheaper than meat. But if they are only using 5% then I'm sure they have it there for a good reason.

wat do
>>
>>2377789
Put them back and let her do it
>>
>>2377789
Make the place you want the kittens seem better than the place she is putting them. I have had great luck with using a medium sized dog crate with a sheet over it to keep it dark. Make sure the nesting box is away from drafts and in a dim area, with lots of towels for cushion. Also clean the area daily if the kittens shit or piss in there.

I'm fostering young kittens who should be using the litter box by their own now but they shit in random places. Torties are just a kind of calico which are both known to have the attitude. I have both a tortie and pastel calico and I can confirm they have a lot of attitude which I noticed before I even knew they were known for that. My tortie is pretty moody, she's independent and is quick to get annoyed and start huffing. She's not afraid to hiss. She's awesome to be around if she's in a good mood though, and she really is the most beautiful cat I've ever had. The attitude reputation could also come from almost all torties being females as well though. If you get one I just suggest that you make sure it has a lot of space so it won't be overcrowded and avoid rooming it with another female cat who is territorial

We were friends with an outside cat, very tame and nice - we think the original owners moved away or something so we let it take shelter in the garage when it felt like it. It never wanted to come inside, and upon being brought inside it would scurry to the door as quickly as possible. (Father was insanely allergic so we couldn't have kept him inside anyway.) The day we were gonna take it to a shelter we found it squashed into our driveway, repeatedly ran over by some sick fuck friend of a dude my dad put in prison. I'll never get a cat, always wanted one, but that shit is burned into my mind too harshly. Still haven't really processed it fully.
>>
>>2378508
Female torts are bitchy. They will avoid you for months over a switch from meal of steak trimmings one day to a spaghetti dinner the next. Really rude and quick to bite, though they temper their strikes so you won't get cut too much.

As a lifelong cat owner whose family allowed our cats to go outside because we lived in a quiet neighborhood with a wooded area, I understand why you would want your cat to be able to go outside and be happy. But you should have anticipated the possible dangers. We lived at the bottom of a street and didn't have any aggressive dogs living next door. We kept new cats inside for at least a month so they could understand what their home was and slowly let them go outside, while supervised until they got the hang of things. As a result, they all lived long happy cat lives where they got the best of both worlds.

Again, sucks your cat died that way. But let this be a lesson, man.

This is Erebus, about two minutes before fleeing in terror from the vacuum. Turns out he also has a major fear of mylar balloons. I thought he'd enjoy jumping at the bobbing string, but he bolted out of the room and didn't reappear for four hours, when he finally got hungry enough to peep around the corner and see it was gone.

But aside from that little tic he is happy and healthy, plus my hours got slashed so he gets plenty of playtime.

I've owned two torties and have befriended a very friendly tortie that lives down the street. They definitely have some of the strongest personalities I've seen in cats, which usually manifests in them being very friendly and confident or very standoffish. The first one I've had is still the most emotional cat I've known, he would go out of his way to show love for you but could also hold a mean grudge when you did something he didn't like. Would also get deep depressions and seemed to be able to ponder his own existence. I miss the little guy, he was put down a year ago because of cancer.

This our other tortie who's a lot younger than the first one. He basically taught her how to be cat when she was a kitten, especially when it came to fighting. She's super sweet with people and refuses to scratch or bite anyone which is weird, but she wouldn't hesitate to fight our other cat off when he would keep trying to play with her. Is very persistent in getting what she wants, she has my mom wrapped around her paw.

That's the correct statistic, very rare. He was a stray too. I think our Vet once surmised that him being male may have made him extra emotional since he was supposed to be female, which is hilarious in and of itself. He was also incapable of meowing, could only let out these petite little squeaks.

Dogfag with a catfag roommate that generally neglects his pet. Problem is that the cat never shuts up, we have a spare room downstairs that I'll pick him up and put him in when he starts howling around midnight at closed doors but he never seems to accept his lot in life and just fuck around in another part of the house. The thing is that he wasn't nearly as annoying last semester and I think it may have to do with our old roommate leaving and taking his cats with him, it's worth mentioning though that he kept both his cats in his room 24/7 so the only interaction the remaining cat had with them was through paw tag under the door.

So does anyone have solutions to getting an annoying cat to shut the fuck up and mind his own business without paying attention to him? It usually just ends up encouraging him to scream in the future anyway.
>>
>>2381910
Without paying attention to him? Nope. Good luck with school.
>>
>>2381913
What hope is there in full on ignoring? Usually I put him away because I don't feel like hearing him through my headphones, but I notice that half the time I pick him up and put him away he's purring for the 8 second ride. Would ignoring him for like a week straight set a new standard that no matter how big a tantrum he throws he won't get a response on demand?

Unfortunately your shit roommate has to pay attention to it, play with it and stuff. Otherwise it would constantly whine because he knows that at some point he will get attention from the owner, even if it's just him coming out to feed or something. He will definitely learn he won't get attention from you, but there's still other people in the house he may try to get attention from. You could still try it; maybe he will learn that at night he won't get any attention? Then again to a cat bored to death, there is no problem with howling all night. It has nothing better to do after all.
>>
>>2382156
Yeah I figured this might be the case, I just don't want to hear the answer even though I know it's the most realistic solution. It doesn't help that the cat is on the younger side at around 2 years old and hasn't been neutered. Assuming that the reason he's being such a shitlord is excess energy/lack of attention I guess I'm fucked, maybe I'll buy a laser pointer some day or be able to convince my roommate to turn him into an outdoor cat at some point. Are there really no ways to get an indoor cat to occupy/tire himself out?
>>
>>2382175
Don't turn him into an outdoor cat before he gets fixed. If you think one cat is annoying, try 6-8 wailing, high energy kittens hanging outside your house fighting and fucking in early hours.

Some cats will entertain themselves but if the neglect is as bad as you say, just like dogs cats will become a nuisance if they are left alone too long. There are automatic toys you can try but they may not work. You could always talk your roommate into rehoming the cat and getting a very old cat who is likely to just sleep day and night

This is my cat 2 years ago.
Lovely Birman, sometimes brings the ball back, very playful, very social, can let her out and will always find her way back, even when just in a new environment. She's now around 8-9 years I guess
Unfortunately she lives with my dad at the moment because I can't offer her the space I deem necessary for a cat (and she couldn't go outside, at least not easily) and he doesn't play with her enough. It makes her wither when she can't play enough, sadly..

Rehoming is most likely off the table, granted I haven't brought it up and that's just my analysis of the current house politics; he has a shitty cat he doesn't really take care of and treats as an annoying stuffed animal he occasionally pays attention to, and I smoke in the house and have loud alarm clocks that go off early in the morning and put on snooze 5 to 7 times before waking up. I like the automatic toy idea though, might give that a shot, but desu the outdoor cat idea is just a pipe dream I have anyway since I already floated that in the hopes that the little retard would run away or get lost in the dead of night and never come back.

I got my kitten and fed her, in order, Royal Canin kitten dry, purina kitten chow dry (I regret this one so much), science diet prescription i/d, science diet healthy development dry, and now NutriSource kitten dry. I once fed her fancy feast but she barely ate it and the vet recommended stopping.
I used to feed her wet 2x a day, but now I just give her dry food. I tried Dr Fosters and Smith canned and Science Diet kitten canned, but she won't eat them. Is it because I fed her dry food too often? I also heard science diet has poor ingredients.

What's a good canned food brand for kittens? She's almost a year old with just 1 month to go. I wouldn't pay over 4 dollars a can if I can help it, but I want her to live a long life without digestive problems.

I looked up some brands and I might try ordering some online. I'm thinking of Addiction, By Nature, FirstMate, Nature's Logic, and Redbarn.

I've heard Orijen is a good dry food brand, so should I finish the NutriSource and switch?

I also got her fvrcp and rabies shots but I got a Be Vaccine Mmart brochure and now I want to vaccinate her with 7 other shots. I was planning to take her on walks in a harness and lead, but now I'm waiting until I get all her vaccinations.

What are some good wet and dry foods?

Thanks in advance. I appreciate any help.

Also I'm a burger, so any other U.S. owners with feedback (or anyone with any advice really) are greatly appreciated.
>>

Not to be a cunt, but pretty much everything you listed is a lower grade cat food. I never heard of nutrosource though so I can't say for that. Your cat is probably like mine and addicted to the carbs and shit in dry food. When switching a cat from unhealthy dry to healthy wet, it's like going from eating solely McDonald's to going vegan. Even though it's bad for them, cats still like to eat it. One way to get around it is to add some dry food with the canned food to make switching easier. You will have to put up with a hunger strike though, if you give into it it will only last longer. Also when you find a brand you like, try to stick with it and stick with the same flavor at least while getting the cat to switch. Lots of cats are very finicky about change, and them not liking something in my experience is usually because they aren't used to it. So switching cat food often because he won't eat it may actually be hurting your case. Also if your cat is picky or sensitive you may not be able to switch dry foods asap, you may have to do a gradual switch so they will actually eat it.

When shopping you want to look for foods that are mostly meat. You don't want to see any fillers or by-products in ingredients. There should be no grains. Cats were not meant to break down large amounts of carbs. You want to make sure Taurine is added, or that whole organs are used to make the food. Carrageenan may cause cancer so some want to avoid it. Be wary of sites that compare foods. I have yet to find a decent cat one that is reviewed by a professional (most is user reviewed so shit like Friskies is always#1), has a lot of different brands, and isn't owned by a cat food company.

Don't feel bad, I still cut my cat's food with shit food and I'm fully aware of how bad it is. My only big concern with raw is Taurine. You may want to add more of it into your cat's food just in case.

As far as toys, I've had luck with laser pointers. They actually make laser pointer things that you can turn on and it will go automatically. There are a ton of automated toys, but they cost a deal more than other toys. My cats are scared little shits and run from most automatic toys. If you have a real bold cat you could also just get a small RC car.

Our cat's 15 years old and I'm starting to notice her joints are making noise when she gets up after sleeping or jumps up to something
is it common for older cats to get something like that and will it actually worsen? Sofar she doesn't seem to be in any pain or so.
>>
>>2379572
Put out some dog food that's poisoned.

Or learn from it and realize letting your cat outside carries risks. When I was younger I let my cat outside, and it had a few close calls and made it by luck. We moved, I was a little older and more risk adverse and he was getting old so he became an indoor cat. Worked out until he died of old age in my bed. But look, shit can happen out there in an uncontrolled, unsupervised environment. Decide if it's worth the risk.

I'm very sorry for your loss, but I'm sure your cat was great and had a good life with you.

Taste of the Wild, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, and I and Love and You are pretty middle-of-the-road in terms of quality vs. price. Some of the "best money can buy" brands include Orijen, Wellness CORE, Merrick, Nature' Logic, Weruva, and Tiki Cat. My own cats get Canidae Grain-Free PURE Elements; I'd place it between the price/quality rank of those two categories.

Don't be spooked about urine/kidney issues. You could feed the highest quality food in existence your cat's entire life and still end up with those due to shitty genetics. Owning non-purebred animals is always kind of a crapshoot that way. As long as you're feeding decent quality food and providing wet on at least a supplemental basis, you're doing great.

Cats thankfully don't require a lot of vaccinations compared to dogs:
-Initial series of 3-4 distemper vaccines (your FVRCP) given 3-4 weeks apart, then boostered in a year. Boosters after that can be given 1-3 years apart depending on the vaccine type, vet's preference, and cat's lifestyle. With mostly-indoor cats 1 per 3 years is fine, but free-roamers should have their vax updated more often.
-1 rabies vaccine given at 16 weeks, then boostered in a year. After that same 1-3 year protocol described above can be followed.
-Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is not considered core like the previous two, but is recommended in individuals that are going to roam or otherwise be around unfamiliar cats. The first vaccine gets boostered 3-4 weeks later, then annually thereafter.

Other vaccines exist, but I've never worked with a vet who has used or recommended anything else. The FIP, FIV, etc. vax have highly questionable efficacy rates.

Not to be a shit, but true Japanese bobtails are rare and most of them are either white/orange, calicio, or white/black. Your cat is most likely either a Manx mix (but not pure, as they have round faces/eyes) or just a normal DSH that happens to not have a tail. Very cute regardless.
>>
>>2382922
Considering her age, it's most likely just arthritis. Cats are very good at hiding their pain. This site has some decent information: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?articleid=1395

I personally recommend Cosequin (or at least some kind of glucosamine/chondroitin supplement). One of my old girls got pretty painful during her last few years and honestly, although I didn't have high hopes when I started her on Cosequin, 6-8 weeks later it was like she was 5 years younger. IIRC it's like $20 for one bottle at pet stores that would last a good 2+ months.

His tail is an inch and a half long and crooked. From what information I gathered about JBTs' Their tails suffer from a deformity which limits the length, but all the tail vertebra are still intact.
Thee tails are normally never the same length to one another and are curled.

The most common coat patterned for a Japanese Bobtail is white with splotches (Tabby, Solids,Calio, etc). The Mi-ke pattern is the most favored, consisting of a white coat with patches of black and red.

Large round eyes, large ears, triangular head, longer torsos and back legs are indicative of JBTs, Gehrman possesses all this morphology.

Also the vet informed me that he was a Japanese Bobtail after I did this investigating.

Vets know fuck all about some things including behavior, nutrition and especially breeds. I worked at a clinic and the vet would tell owners their pit bull was a ridgeless RR and other ridiculous shit.

Either way, no papers = no breed. This is especially true for cats.

Interesting. My tortoise shell has a similar personality. She's 16 years old now, but is extremely sweet and affectionate and gentle with humans. She loves to be around people and will cry at you when she is ready to go to sleep. She wants me to be in the room with her at my desk while she goes to sleep on my bed. Will never scratch or bite even when she gets tired of being held (though she likes being held and petted).

Never ever gets along with other cats, though. She hates them and won't have anything to do with them. She fought plenty of neighbor cats when she was younger and always has avoided are other cats. If they get too close she will his and spit and smack them. Even her sister (we got them both from the same litter as kittens) she would not tolerate. Odd also because she doesn't care about our dogs. She basically doesn't acknowledge them except to walk around them. Just hates cats and loves people.

So I've been visiting a local cat sanctuary recently and fell in love with a very affectionate 10 year old cat. I'm adopting her in 4 days.

I haven't owned a cat in well over 10 years, mainly owning multiple dogs. I'm confident that I can take care of her properly and have been reading up a lot. I've got most of the necessary items necessary for her, but I want to know, well, anything to help her enjoy living with me as much as possible. Do you anons have any tips on raising an older cat?
>>
>>2383431
A high-quality wet or raw diet is a must

As far as behavior, she's probably pretty set in her ways. The best thing you can do is watch, listen, and learn what she likes. Give her space and time in the first few weeks to months, as she becomes accustomed to her new home.
>>
>>2380135
Introduce them in ways they can't touch each other. Let them sniff through doors first, then put a grate between the doors and let them see each other without risk of physical contact. Finally, only let them interact while supervised. After all this goes down it's pretty safe to let them coexist. Just take it as it goes.
>>
My cat has been bugging the SHIT out of me and just gets worse. I block the door because the lock is broken and she just comes in and out, every time I want food she wants some, right now she is slamming the full weight of body against the door trying to get in. Her box is clean, I fed her even though I just woke up at 3am and it's not technically morning yet, she just always wants something. I give her a lot of attention and feed her pieces of my food (just meat) so I guess she's spoiled, and all I can do is stop spoiling her but jesus fuck, what a noodge.

OK lads, I've got a predicament for you all. I'm living in Central American countryside and adopted two kittens from the same litter at 10 weeks, and they're now 17 weeks old. I intend to bring them home when I leave in a few months, and save them from an early death.

The black one is smaller and weaker and the grey one is obviously heavier and stronger (e.g., jumping), so I initially thought the black was female and the grey male. It seemed obvious. But even at this point, when I try to look at their genitals it's not obvious. Their genitals -do- look kind of slit-like, but not as close to the anus as I've seen in guides online. This sounds stupid, but they also don't look that different from the line between the undeveloped balls and penis on a male...

So I brought them to a "vet" today who took a long time and didn't seem sure, but said the black one was male and the grey one was female. Wtf? I'm not sure if I should believe him. If he really is a vet he's a shitty one, because he can't even spay a female cat. (I think he mostly just runs a store that sells animal food and medicine.)

And regardless, unless they had different fathers (which is certainly possible), I thought the obviously larger/heavier/stronger one would surely be male. I don't think the black one is even particularly runty, as in the litter of 5, 3 of them were black and the same size as this one. The 2 grey ones were both much bigger.

Also kind of afraid, if one is male and one is female, of them sexually maturing soon. Definitely do not want kittens.

Any advice dudes?
>>
>>2383893
My advice is to get one - or preferably both - fixed so you don't have to worry about more kittens either way. 4.5 months is well old enough to get spayed and neutered.

This is a real good read for what you should be looking for
http://www.reviews.com/cat-food/
The best foods tend to be lesser known, so you may not see your cat food in that list. Just read what they are looking out for, and carry that over for when you buy food. This criteria seems to be pretty grade A+ shit if you want the vest. If you weren't looking for THE best, then you can pick and choose what matters more to you, like if you are more concerned about recalls than being made in a 1st world country, etc.

Is keeping a cat locked up inside a house for their whole life, never letting them go outside, ethical? Particularly assuming they've been outside before. Explain, while you're at it. Our cat didn't return for 2 nights, and there are coyotes and owls around at night, so he's been locked inside since, but I'm not sure if it's okay to keep him like this. And a catio or a leash are both not an option, sorry.
>>
>>2384742
it depends if you're a bad cat owner or not

if you're a bad cat owner nothing you do will be ethical so kicking it outside may well be the best choice for you.
>>
>>2384745
Our last cat was an outside cat, who ALWAYS came back before night. We have treats and a scratching post at home, and we love hanging out with the cat. This new cat isn't much for cuddling or hanging out though. We're not currently set up to be good indoor cat owners. Any advice?
>>
>>2384742
I have a crippled extremely timid cat. She'd get hit by a car or mauled by some retard's dog that's off the leash in the first 10 minutes outside. Luckily she's perfectly content with sitting on the windowpane and never asked me to go outside.
>>
>>2384759
This doesn't help me at all.
>>
>>2384761
Yeah I'm just rambling sorry. I think it's perfectly ethical to keep them inside their whole lives. They'll get used to it after a few weeks and it's so much safer and healthier for both of you.
>>
>>2384763
Yeah but I still don't feel right locking it up. Cats don't domesticate, living under an owner just fits their code because it's pure benefit to them. They love hunting, roaming outside, curiously exploring things, and smelling the interesting smells. You can, at BEST, give them a bastardized artificial version at your house, using various toys and playing with them. I don't like it. I've yet to see proof that cats don't become less happy when you lock the outside world from them. Furthermore, if someone persuaded me that my fears were unfounded, I'd still need some advice on how to suit my home to the needs of an indoor cat. Can you do one or both of these things for me?
>>
>>2384765
Then don't have a cat idk. You sound like you won't change your mind just by reading a few 4chan posts. I know my cats are happier inside and that's enough for me.
>>
>>2384766
I will change my mind if someone can prove me wrong. Not having this cat is not an option. I'll spare the details but it's not my cat, and the only way this cat will get any new accommodations is if I do it. And I know this cat is not getting what it needs, but I don't know what we need to get for this cat, because the last cat had it's needs and joys provided mostly by nature.
>>
>>2384765
About suiting your home for an indoor cat, a big factor is the size of your housre/apartment. Obviously they will feel happier in a big suburban house than in a 40m2 city apartment. Get cat shelves or constructions like this: moderncatDOTnet/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/nabinamu3.jpg

You'll have to play with it often. Idk for how long, that depends on how playful and needy your cat is. Pet it and cuddle it whenever you can in the beginning. I noticed how my newer cat went from extremely playful and almost feral to more docile and cuddly in a few months. And by all means, neuter/spay them if you didn't. That's all from me I'm off to work-
>>
>>2384771
Thank you for the advice. Our house is big. I will look into the link you posted now.
>>
>>2384742
Yes. All of a cat's needs can be met in an indoors only environment. So can dogs, but it is immensely more difficult and therefore is not done often, and quickly becomes unsanitary. I mean we keep monkeys, who are much smarter than cats or dogs, in zoo enclosures smaller than our houses and they can do fine. Do you know why? Because we can meet their needs and mimic their wild habits.

One argument I hear is that cats (cats only, this doesn't extend to any other pet) needs freedom to be happy. If we are going to simply assume cats can understand incredibly complex concepts like freedom (based not on science mind you but just muh feels), then we are opening Pandora's box for animal rights. If a cat can understand freedom, then surely a dog can understand consent, etc.

Okay. I guess cats are dumb enough to accept such a life and be happy. I'll work on adding some better cat stuff to the house.
>>
>>2384787
you could always let them outside in cat tents, catios, cat balconies, etc if you're worried about coyotes. My s/o had outdoor declawed cats, but one of them got super bad arthritis really young so we had to start keeping them indoors. The one guy only needed a ton of attention, but the one cat was very active so we had to find new ways to stimulate him. Just google games you can play with your cat. I've even taught them to do a few things. They are still happy and active and playful, and they no longer howl to go outside.

Does not have to be expensive, it can actually be made very cheap with DIY. The cat tents IDK how that would be done safely with DIY, but outdoor enclosures and little cat boxes can be made on the cheap. But all the more reason to not have a cat outdoors, they are more likely to cost you money in vet bill and also need to have vaccines routinely.

>>2384802
I suppose you could build one on the cheap. I think I might do that.

Yeah. We tried a leash tied to the house, but it kept getting caught on shit. I'll try walking him myself and see how that goes.

This fuzzy little asshole just gave me a scare. I heard him heaving in my bedroom (only carpeted room in the place) and found a little bit of cat puke on the floor, and him sitting in the corner looking like he was about to do it again. So I try to move him to the easier to clean floor in the hall, but as I put him down, he didn't take his own weight and flopped down on his side. He wasn't getting up, and his breathing was shallow, so I was panicking. I don't have a car either, so getting him to a vet is a process. After a few minutes of that, I figure it's time to pull out the nuclear option. I called my mother at 3:00 in the morning to say we need a lift to the vet. Thankfully she loves the little guy just as much as I do (used to be a family cat, but ended up with me as we all went our separate ways). So what happens? The little bugger waits until I start getting dressed, then gets up, does a lap of the living room, goes to take a shit, and goes about life as if nothing had happened. He had two people worried sick about him, and now he's just lounging on the couch purring at me without a care in the world.
>>
>>2385228
I should mention, he's an old man too. He just had his 15th birthday a few weeks ago, so every time he starts acting out of the ordinary, it's a little worrying.

This happened to me once when I was young. My family was literally walking out the door to go on vacation when one of my cats puked, then flopped over and wouldn't move or bear her own weight when we stood her up. We panicked, put everything off to take her to the emergency vet. Halfway through the car ride she suddenly seems fine. Was fine at the vet; they couldn't find anything wrong with her. I don't remember what the vet said happened but Jesus, it was a lot of drama for a hairball.
>>
How do i know if my cat knows what the litterbox is? I gently placed it in their only to have it immediately walk out and the most they've done with it was sniff at it for a little. I'm worried and can't sleep how do I teach my cat to use it aa
>>
Hey /an/ I have literally discovered this is a board today, but I was wondering if you could help me in my dilemma

> Live in the UK (If this helps on legal matters, that I'll explain later)
> Little black cat, probs only a few years old turns up
> Always angry and hates being petted
> Pretty thin, coat not healthly, some patches of fur are thin
> Don't know who the owners are
> We start giving her food out of pity, we even build her an outside shelter as our own cat doesn't like other cats and we don't want them scrapping at night
> Over the weeks, she looks healthier and her coat is thicker and shinier
> Her belly is a bit swollen...and keeps swelling
> Her nips are also pretty swollen
> Doesn't seem to be in physical discomfort
> She may well be up the duff

Now we are faced with 2 problems:

1) Where shall she give birth?

> Like I said, our own is barely tolerating another cat hanging round, but their getting used to each other, a whole litter of kittens may be another matter
> We are considering clearing out an old shed and building a shelter there for the mum and her babies, ofc we'll bring food, keep it clean and dry for them all
> The problem is, will this be safe, e.g., from rats?
> Any advice on how to handle this situation?

2) The fact that, she is not our cat, so what of the kittens

> Like I said, she was unhealthy when she first began hanging round our house
> We think she probably has an owner somewhere as we took of her old frayed collar, to find an new one replace a few days later
> Now my thinking is, if her owners cannot be bothered (Or perhaps, sadly are unable - See: Old and senile) to look after 1 young adult cat, I worry for the welfare of a litter of kittens. I mean they haven't even bothered to get the poor thing spayed
> She has been round at ours so much, do they eve know she is pregnant?
> However, by extension of her being their cat, I assume the kittens in her may be their property
> Any advice?

*Note:

> Always angry hates being petted when she first began coming voer
> Now runs to use for fuss and attention

Really turned around her attitude to people, but still gets moody at times and lets us know with an angry YOOOWWWWLLLL!!!!

Sometimes when I'm petting my cat, he'll use his paws to bring my hand to his mouth and start licking and VERY lightly chomping on them a few times (by lightly, I mean he literally just touches his teeth to my fingers without any pressure) before pushing my hand back up to his head. Sometimes he spends almost half a minute just chomping and licking on my fingers before letting me go back to petting him, and he usually only lets me pet him for a few second before returning my fingers to his mouth. Does anyone know why my cat is doing this?

I figured at first that maybe he was just trying to get his saliva on my fingers so I would basically be cleaning him, but it feels like he's trying to tell me something else that I'm missing. He never does it to deter me from petting him, because if I ever pull away, he tries to pull me back with his paws.
>>
My aunt feeds a few stray cats and one day one of them came back injured. It turns out he had somehow torn his urethra and his urine was leaking under his skin, causing thhe skin to rot. He had to have skin grafts and major urethra surgery (he's basically a tranny cat now). Her husband wouldnt allow a 2nd cat inside the house so we took him in through his surgeries and recovery, which he's made it through very well, even after the vets said his chances were slim.
Now, i'm moving out of my parent's finally and wish to take this cat with me but my mother isn't keen on the idea. However, get this, she has EIGHT other cats (just under the legal limit). I think i can provide better care for this cat than he's been getting here. My mom can't even afford to keep up the vet care of these other 8 cats and the only reason she could take care of this one is because my aunt pays for his care, which she would continue to do if i took him. He has fleas, is now overweight, doesnt get along woth the other cats, and his urine habits arent properly tracked yet she still thinks hes better off here. I really want this cat to live a long, healthy life and for my aunt's investment in him to not go to waste but its becoming very emotionally taxing try to pry him from my crazy cat lady mom's clutches. I just don't know what to do about it, since logic doesnt work on her and our conversations about it always end in her accusing me of being insensitive. I don't know if there is any advice that can help me on this or if i should just give him up...

Pic related, his name is Sweetie and i've been trying to come up with a less gay name for him for ages (suggestions welcome).

Pet foods are wildly different in terms of quality. I could list off brands, but you can check the quality of any food yourself by looking at the ingredients. Shit like Friskies, Iams, and Purina (grocery store brands) have wheat and other grains listed as the first ingredients, followed by nonspecific meat by products. Super super bad for an animal designed to eat raw meat. You want to see a specific meat as the #1 ingredient, with no grains or food coloring on the list at all.

That being said, the cats are strays so don't worry about breaking your bank on high quality food.

I'm sorry anon, that's terrible. At least he probably died quickly, and dying on his daily routine is better than if he had been euthanized at the shelter.

I agreed to catsit my mother's cat. She has since dropped off the face of the earth and refuses to pick up the phone/come get her cat. I love cats, but not this one. He young, poorly trained, and too rambunctious for my schedule and life. Coupled with how I was duped into caring for him, I don't want him. Is there anything I can do besides taking him to a shelter?

"Mom you have eight cats. I like this one, I'm taking it"
Honestly what sort of relationship could a person have with eight cats... Seems like you should think hard about what you say and re-approach the conversation from an angle that doesn't allow her to emotionally manipulate you into giving up. Worse comes to worse, just catnap the little bastard.
>>

go to an asian mart and buy whole frozen vacuum packed quail with the feathers on. it's a lot cheaper than buying $4/can wet food for strays.

protip: if you're feeding strays you should just adopt it

My apartment is at the 10th floor and I keep finding my cat outside the window, I put a window screen but he makes holes through it and I keep fixing it.
He's only 1 year old and it scares me to death every time I see him there because he sometimes falls from the table when we play so he's not the most agile cat.
What can I do?

Sounds like he's grooming you. It's not uncommon(at least to my knowledge) for cats to give "love bites" while grooming.

My rescue is declawed, he compensates for his lack of claws with insane jaw strength. He only bites rarely when overexcited... But will consistently clamp down hard for a few seconds whilst grooming. I heard from someone experienced w/ caring for big cats that allowing them to groom you helps w/ bonding, and the "love bites" aren't uncommon with them either.

My boyfriend and I just moved in together (a new apartment) and we've both got cats. I have 1 male 1 female and he has 1 female. We kept them separated for a week, and now we're introducing them. My male and his female get along fine, but my female is t e r r i f i e d of his female. They're both approximately the same age, but mine gets real low and flattens her ears and they hiss at each other when they get close. I've tried feeding them treats, but mine won't eat when she's in the same room as his. Any tips for making them more comfortable around each other?
>>
>>2388104
Gradual introduction. Separate with baby gate or screen door, where they can see/smell each other but not fight. Feed within sight of each other. Gradually move food bowls closer to gate.
>>
There's a stray that lives around my apartment that's been there for a while now. I don't have the money/room to adopt it and get it proper medical treatment, but I'm scared to call animal services in case they put it down or something like that. It's obviously skinny and covered in scabs and whatnot, but nothing that looks life-threatening. Is there something I can do beyond putting out food/clean water? It's already pretty warm where I live, but would it benefit from a covered shelter? Should I just call the local shelter?

Ok, was the anon with the cat problem. Well I still have a cat problem, but it's a new problem! We weren't letting him outside bc one time he didn't come back to us for 2 nights, which is dangerous. I've begun walking him in the yard with a leashed harness for an hour a day to enjoy the beautiful weather. Besides that he's an indoor cat.

Now the problem is that I think this cat is getting cucked. What I mean is, cats are hunters by nature. This cat has a couple types of hunting: the red laser dot toy that I use with him, and rabbits and squirrels outside. The cucking is that he can't hunt shit when I'm holding him back by the leash, and the red dot toy never offers the pay-off of him holding the prey in his hands. I feel horrible that in all hunting opportunities, he loses in the end. That can't be good for him. I do have a fishing pole toy, and I think that one satisfies the full hunting cycle, somewhat. But I'd prefer to have more than that for him.

What do you think I should do?
>>
>>2388189
Step 1: play with cat
Step 2: immediately after play session, reward with treats or meal. He gets to eat his "kill".
>>
>>2388208
After the laser dot game, I usually give him a treat because I thought it would help forget that he didn't "catch" the dot. Should've mentioned that I was doing that, but that's cool that you agree with me on that.

Hi,

So I got my cat from a shelter a few years ago now and he has always had trouble when pooping. At first he had really bad diarrhoea so I switched food brand to Grainfree FussyCat brand which seems to have helped to an extent. However when he poops he makes a pained sound as he goes. He also seems to have really large poops.

We don't feed him much wet food and he also gets fed Ham from my housemate on occasion.

What do I need to do to his diet to help him out?
>>
>>2388272
Hi anon. Most likely he has constipation, especially if he's an older cat. Switching to a mostly canned diet should help due to the greatly increased hydration compared to dry. Laxatone may also help. You may need to talk to your vet about fiber dietary supplements and/or medications such as lactulose.
>>
My cat and I moved into a condo last year, so today is the first time he's been here for the yearly fire alarm testing. My poor little buddy isn't handling it well at all. I've never seen him move so fast as when he ran when the first alarm started going off. Now he's making it worse for himself by camping out under the recliner in the bedroom. The bedroom is the room where the noise is the loudest, because that's where the speaker for the alarm is.
>>
>>2388364
Is the fire alarm just a once yearly thing? If there won't be any more alarms until next year, just leave him be until he feels safe enough to come out. Otherwise try to find or make another secluded, dark area in a quieter place that he will feel safe in.
>>
>>2388272
My cat had this problem, and it wound up being due to an allergy to salmon flavoring. Try switching the food up again.
>>
>>2375501

There is a cat roaming my backyard that has no collar and has a swelling on it's neck the size of a peach.

Looks young, like no older then 2yrs old.
Animal control won't do anything and I can't afford to take care of it. Never seen this cat before either.
What should I do?
>>
>>2379572
Why didn't you just broadside them?
You do have a 6th rate, for home defence, right Anon?
>>
>>2388372
Yeah, once yearly. The alarms were going off once a minute or so for over an hour though, as they had to verify the operation of the speaker in every unit. Little guy came out before the testing was over and lay down on the floor next to my desk where I was sitting, so I just reached down to scratch and pet him every once in a while. The testing's over now, but he's still slinking around low to the ground every time he moves. I'm thinking I'll take him for a visit at my mom's place for next year's test. He still won't like it much, but he reacts better to being taken over there than he did to the alarms today.
