9 months ago I adopted a 4 year old indoor cat. He was toilet trained and until recently hasn't been a problem, but lately he's been shitting on the floor about a foot away from his litter box (every time he shits).
I've tried various types of litter boxes, litters and even tried letting him shit outside since it started, but it didn't help.
His box is kept clean, and he's never pee'd anywhere outside of the litter box. I'm just not sure what to do.

Take him to the vet.
Generally, when your cat starts peeing/crapping in odd places consistently, something is wrong.
I had a cat that was acting perfectly fine all respects except she started randomly peeing in one spot of the house. Took her in on that oddity alone and the vet found a bladder infection.
cats are vile creatures
why did you think bringing home an animal that digs around in a sandbox full of literal piss and shit in your fucking house wouldn't be a nasty nightmare?
get a better pet next time
take it to the vet
