I've been staying with some family and bonded with their ~handsome~ cat over the course of 9-10 months. No I'm not serious about being romantically involved with my cat. I just mean that he's my special man, he became my best friend and we cuddle a whole lot and I love him and he loves me!
And I'm leaving :( Probably won't be back for quite some time.
Will he be depressed? How do I tell him? How do I ease this on to him?! What do?!?!??
as long as the family continues to feed him he's gonna be just fine buddy

Why do cat people keep falling into that delusion of their cat actually caring about them as anything other than a source of food?

Because they do? Outdoor cats could easily catch enough to feed themselves but they choose not to as they form an attachment with certain people or other pets. Domestic cats are social pack animals and when left to their own devices and go feral they will seek out other cats and form packs.

He'll just assume you died and then forget about you.
