what would be the economic implications of making our currency actually based on sand dollars

Counterfeiting would be an issue.
Not to mention they are also brittle, so storage in a wallet would be hard.
If you made an artificial sand dollar it might be better? You can easily in grave dollar amounts into a casting as well, plus anti-conterfeiting measures.

Radial symmetry and survivor bias. Biological symmetry is beautiful because it reflects healthiness; if one side of a person's face looks different from the other side, it's usually due to some injury or illness; if both sides look exactly the same they're most likely healthy.
The sand dollars that are malformed and unsymmetrical usually don't survive past a very young age so you mostly ever find the shells of well-formed sand dollars.
What are those even like? I keep hearing they're like snails, but can they retract into their shell thing? How hard are they? Are the like starfish? They look more like starfish.
