- Anon asks about what kind and quantity of hamsters would be acceptable for a 20 gallons cage (the most common answer was 1 because of the territorial behavior)
- Anon's 1 month hamster head is always bent and runs in circles (probably an ear infection. Anon took the hamham to the vet but didn't update)
How do we do the Richard Gere thing?
Probably a common hamster not sure. I have had it for 2 weeks and grew up a lot, he needs a bigger wheel. I bought a 20cm one but I have to mod the cage to make it fit.
This is my ham. It is really lovely.

My boyfriend's hamster
>>2365054
It's so cute
>>2365078
I tell him that too but he doesn't think he's as cute as I do
>>2365079
He's wrong, it's beautiful
>>2365015
Yup he's a Syrian, is he nice?
>>2365007
Nice, I hope /ham/ can be a thing here. I love talking about my babes
>>2365027
Are Robos really all shy and skittish like a lot of the online care sheets say? I've seldom seen them irl before, I've started to breed and deal primarily with Campbell's
Pic is my boy Babs. He's my favorite pet I think
Really want to get a hamster soon.
I've had two of them before but I've never had anything other than a Syrian.
Would it be a bad idea to get a dwarf? Or should I stick to a bigger size?
>>2365110
Dwarfs are pretty much the same care wise. Just a lot more fragile obviously.
>>2365110
>>2365151
Dwarves are superior imo. They're cuter, nicer by my experience, and hardier against disease than syrians. My theory is that it's because dwarves aren't inbred to hell and back, all Syrian hamsters in the pet trade are descended from a brother-sister pair many years ago.
Dwarves also have potential to live with others of their own kind, whereas Syrian hamsters will kill each other upon reaching sexual maturity, unless breeding.
Keep in mind that I'm biased, though. I've only ever kept dwarves. I've had good experiences with syrians, but phodopus hamsters are more in my ball park for a lot if reasons
If you have any questions about hamsters care or anything, feel free to ask me, I'd be happy to tell you everything I know
>>2365179
So I could have two dwarves? That's pretty neat!
What's the best size environment for them? I was thinking of constructing my own cage for them that's 2' wide 2 1/2" tall and 3' long
Would that be too small or too large for two dwarves?
>>2365246
With multiple dwarves more is better. You don't need height as hamsters don't really climb. You could get away with 1ft. But yes that'll be enough space for 2 or 3 dwarves. Just beware that you'll need one of everything per dwarf hamster. And you can only do partial bedding changes depending on the species.
>>2365107
He's still a little bit shy.
He always picks food trough the bars, and sometimes directly from my hand.
I'm happy because I think he is beginning to recognize my voice.
I try to keep him busy by hiding food at different parts of the cage, and build DIY toys with paper rolls.
>>2365107
Also Babs looks cute. Does he like to play with you or is he scared of contact?
>>2365107
Yes, they are very shy, but with patient, you can give them food through bars or from your hand.
>>2365007
Why would anyone want a hamster?
>Piss smells like shit
>Crap all the time
>Bite hurts like fuck
>>2365671
With proper cares they don't smell. With an absorbent paper bed smell is reduced to minimum.
I have been bitten by robos and Syrian hamsters and doesn't hurt that much if they know you. They bite hard to ones who they think are threads.
>>2365246
Yeah, and if you decide to build a cage with those dimensions, you could probably even get up to 3. It's best to get them all from the same litter, they get along better that way. Still, be prepared and able to separate them if needed, some dwarves just don't tolerate others.
>>2365409
Nice. Best of luck with taming the little guy
>>2365411
Babs is my boy, if I just tap on his cage floor, he come right out of hiding and straight to my hand. He loves to lick all my fingers and will climb the open cage door just to get to me, he'll walk right on to my hand and everything. Sometimes if he calms down when he's out, he'll just sit there and let me pet him. Babs is awesome
>>2365670
That's what I've heard. They're so cute though, I love their little eyebrows!
>>2365671
I also have gerbils and mice and the hamsters are by far the least smelly. The mice are the only ones that noticeably smell, and that's only right before their next cage cleaning. Gerbils poop the least, but hams are a close second.
And the bite goes for any rodent, I have a very slight indented scar on my right oalm from where a pregnant rat tore into me, and rats are usually the poster children for sweet rodent pets.
>>2365671
>bite hurts like fuck
pussy
>>2365257
Okay awesome, I just wanted to make sure there was enough room for them if they wanted time to themselves away from the other.
Would robos require partial bedding changes?
>>2365684
Would dwarves from, say petsmart, be from the same litter or would I be better off getting hamsters from somewhere else? I don't know of any hamster breeders in south Texas.
Also I think I'll go with two just in case they don't like one another I can always install a charge separater so they have room for themselves and also don't fight.
Thank you guys so much for helping!!
It'll probably be a long while before I actually get them but I'll be sure to post a thread on here when I do.
>>2365755
Fuck me, I mean cage separator.
>>2365755
Robos absolutely need partial bedding changes and an emergency seperator just in case.
Yes petsmart and petco generally have same litter hamsters. Only buy 2 if they're already together, don't get them from separate cages
Dwarf hamsters are so easy to take care of. Very low maintenance and minimal smell. Here's my little guy
>>2365890
It is really precious. Beware with the cat behind. XD
>>2365755
They'll most likely be from the same litter, but it's hard to tell. Be aware though that two hamsters that seem to get along may change their opinions of each other when you take them home. I've had it happen a couple times before, even with same-litter pairs. From what I've heard, Robos and Chinese dwarves are better for keeping together.
And happy to help, definitely keep us updated.
>>2365890
So cute! Winter white or Russian hybrid?
PS that cat looks hungry
Here's Babs actually using his wheel for once, the fat fuck
>>2365409
Would you be willing to share some of your toy ideas?
>>2366251
A big tube with small tubes put in holes that you made. It's cheap and easy.
I'm getting a Syrian hamster soon. I'm deciding between building a bin cage or buying. Is the money better used on more hamster accessories or should i just buy a hamster cage with everything.
>>2366324
My budget is $60 USD.
>>2366327
I think that is better buy a cage and you build the hamster's toys.
>>2366327
Can't you suck an old guy cock or work at a shop for a few days to get more money?
>>2366334
Thanks I'll take your thought into consideration.
Situation is getting worse because it's growing more and more every day and the wheel is becoming really small for him.
Tomorrow I will mod the cage so he can use the really big wheel I bought for him, 20 cm. I think that the wheel diameter should be at least twice as long as the hamster to be comfortable.
My little ham
This morning he looks like Justin Bieber

I hated hamsters. I had multiple as a kid and they always bit me. In high school my boyfriend and I got a pair to breed for funsies.
>Big tan longhair male teddy bear
>Black and white short hair female
>constantly popping out babies
>giving them away once they're teens
>eventually start giving them to a pet store
>pet store isn't selling them fast enough
>start feeding the babies to my various reptiles
>stepmom flips her shit
>Hamsters =/= mice anon cut it out
>takes our pregnant female and stops our breeding adventure
Ok if you made it this far I promise it turns better
>stepmom obsesses over the mother and her newborn babies
>gets them a bigger enclosure with tunnels n shit
>thing took up an entire quarter of the wall
>feeding them greens n shit
>babies start getting their color
>notice a black and white one with long hair
>start playing with it
>its chill as fuck
>every day I let it roam around my room and feed it lettuce
>it would climb up my leg if I stretched it out and sit on my chest
>Im really attached to him
>stepmom agrees to let me have the hamster back but no breeding
>named him Ogi (like Oh Gee)
>brought him to school a few times never got caught
>Sadly he passed away right before I moved out. He was 3 years and 4 months old.
Ogi single handedly made me learn to love hamsters and rodents in general. I learned a lot about how rodents nibble and need to chew because of their teeth constantly growing. How they nibble to explore their surroundings. After OGI died I got a meme Chinchilla with the hopes he would be like Ogi but it's been a let down. Too old to go through the chinchilla adventure now, especially with all the dogs and farm animals I'm taking care of but once I have a kid I look forward to getting him another a Ogi of his own. They really are the best rodents.
>>2367785
RIP Ogi, he made you a better person.
Make your kid love hamhams from the beginning.
>>2367683
A bad experience with a Syrian, mate?
Mine is healthy as fuck.
>>2366777
Now he's really happy
>>2368227
Oh, that wheel is very cool. The other was ridiculous for it size.
