Rats were some of THE BEST pets I've ever owned. They are so social and love to cuddle up to their owners.

Why in the Hell do these cute little guys get such a bad rap??
>>
Because they control the banks and diamonds.
>>
>>2364665
Because wild rats are a constant pest, they spread diseases and damage buildings and ruin food.

Dogs have mauled millions of people to death
Rabbits have destroyed entire ecosystems
Mice have ruined just as much food as rats
Your point?
>>
>>2364724
Look, I'm not saying it's logical or what I believe, but it's a large factor in why they have a bad reputation.
Most people's first or only experience with rats is them as pests, but most people have at least met a dog or cat.

Yeah, I can't think of many fictional rats that are good. Pic related is one of the few.
You raise a kid on rats as villains and they never see how a real domestic rat is different and they won't like rats.

Because people don't do caresheets. It's a common pet, so must be easy!
Like my friend, for example, complained on hysterical activities of their childhood pet rat, while they swore they "took care of them". "Never ever, what a shit pet, I had bites, pee all over my hands and overall they are so ungrateful".
I searched a bit and apparently if you love oranges and eat them a lot in your room, with the cage, rats will slowly go literally crazy because they hate the scent. I wouldn't know. And hell yea there are tons of mandarines and tanngerines around every winter here. This is a clunky explanation, but here you go.

No they don't you idiot. With a healthy lifestyle, they can live up to 4. They should live up to 2 AT THE VERY LEAST. A severely obese rat will live to about 1-1.5. You really want to shave that many years off your rat's life?

I miss my rat bros and gals.

I'm a fool though and I always take in Rescue Rats as a foster. Since the ones I get are basically pet-shop / factory / back yard bred they always develop cancers or come to me in shit condition / end of life cause no one wants them.

The worst instance of this is I had a terribly underweight black-eyed white. She had a blown out eye, respiratory infection and was tiny for her age. I got to spend one day with her...just one fucking day. The day I picked her and her two sisters up. It was probably the best day of her life. She had hugs and scritches, spaghetti and yoggy treats. She boggled and fell asleep in my hoodie on her own and she and her sisters got to sleep in a decked out cage. I came down next morning and she'd died during the night in her sleep curled up with her sisters.

Her rex sister later died of Mico infection and "old age" as it was for her breeding of just over 2.

Her other sister lasted a year and a half more and was near 2 1./2 and developed a Zymbals tumour. Google that shit

I've had rats with heart conditions, obesity, malnutirition, blindness, deafness, dementia. Dealt with pituitary tumours, mammary tumours, ear infections, urinary tract infections, mico infections etc etc. Name it and I've faced it, thrown all the cash I have at it and been fucked over by it.

I've probably thrown £5K+ easily in rat care on rats that technically weren't even mine.

I still love em and miss them to this day. I wish I could trade years of my life into theirs. I've been told a month in human time is the equivalent to around three years of Rat life. Meaning after a year your rats are basically entering middle-aged and by 4 years are venerable ancients of their kind.

I hate it sometimes though. I really want NFRS certified breeder rats bred for longevity. But they aren't the ones who need my help. I'm currently rat free atm, but fml If I could tomorrow i'd set up a rescue and live like a derranged rat-man.

>>2364816
>Making some sort of weird argument that rats aren't usually portrayed as bad characters
>Posts a mouse

You think it's a coincidence mice are seen as fairly common/acceptable pets for kids while rats aren't? Or why Ratatouille, a movie with a rat main character, is about not judging a book by its cover? How come Mickey Mouse or Jerry aren't rats instead of mice? People don't like them, even though both mice and rats fuck up homes and eat your food/carry disease.

It's a shame, because domesticated rats are very good pets for people who don't have much space and still want something smart.

So.. Is this about underrated pets or how underrated rats are? I had one who killed my gecko and tortoise and bit me within the span of 2 days. Never again.

As far as underrated let's, I'd say snails or pigeons. Snails are so fun to watch eat and hold and pigeons are so much better than parrots.

Rats prey on smaller animals. They kill anything from mice to pigeons

Rats and pigeons, bats and coyotes get a bad rap because they're successful human-colonizers. Out in the wild, animals can shit and fart in the streams without interrupting man's endless romanticizing. It's hard to romanticize about an animal when it's shitting in your cupboard spoiling your food.

In reality, if these morons paid attention to their NATURRRRRRRRR spiel they spew whenever they let their cat or dog run outside, they'd worship the rat and the pigeon. After all, they adapted to us. They fulfill your survival of the fittest bullshit arguments more than any other creatures, and yet, you despise them. Must be because you don't actually give a shit about nature or darwinism beyond a shallow excuse to be a cocksucker and shitpost about niggers.

Whoa whoa whoa there.
The rat was in a cage and the gecko and tortoise lived together their whole lives in a separate cage. The tortoise and gecko moved into my room because i was lonely. I got the rat for my birthday with a nice cage and everything it needed so I had my own pet instead of my dad's. I fell asleep after my birthday party all Tuckered out. They were only together for one night. I woke up the next morning and pieces of gecko and a rat were in the corner of my closet. I tried to pick up rat full on panic mode and it bit me. But yeah. My fault. Nowadays I just don't get shit animals that would eat me and my other pets. Why the hell would you want something that would kill anything it got to anyways?

>>2365516
The turtle actually died from sadness or some shit. After the gecko was killed that he spent his entire life with he stopped eating and drinking and passed away. I told my dad about it afterwards and he insisted he'd be fine. Again it was his tortoise. We both cried for days after he passed. No one really gave a shit about the gecko aside from me tho.

(I was like 13)

My admittedly limited understanding is that there is a wide disparity in personality between rats bred for companionship and wild rats.

Whats funny is that there are other animals more deserving of such a mix up; dog breeds, mice. I suppose it is explainable; rats are exceptionally intelligent, and there seems to be some concordance with intelligence and wider variations in personality. That floating variable in decision patterns apparently roams more when there is more capacity for memory and association to influence the decision pattern, which we ultimately perceive as the quirks constituting 'personality'.

It sure is. Doing remodeling on it atm. Scraping off old wallpaper (junk you see on the carpet), getting rid of old flooring, cabinets, etc. Found a date written of 1976 under the wallpaper yesterday. Probably hasn't been remodeled since it was built in the soviet era.

With its favourite food and lots of repetition/reward and patience. They'll get it... those critters are food-motivated and catch on.

Friend learned that unsalted cashews were her rats favourites. But she also had a special bond with each one so they knew when their name was called it meant a possible treat, affection, or some kind of interaction.

Don't know what the rat’s “favorite“ food is as I only feed it rabbit food and these colorful stick treats, but alright I'll try.

Not sure if you're the same anon who suggested the cage instead of tank to get him to stop going under the couch, but it actually freaking worked. He seems more playful, didn't hide under the couch, and after about 3 hours of playing actually went back into his cage by himself. I let him explore new parts of the apartment now. So, thanks for that. You're like a rat whisperer or something.

>>2369685

Somebody gave me some rats a few years ago. They were great pets, and shockingly intelligent. They had more personality than any animal I've known before or since.

But I wouldn't keep them again.

Their lives are short and domestic rats have a ton of health problems. They were literally bred to be used in research, to be extremely prone to developing cancers, and to drop dead after
a maximum of two years. They are little bundles of heartbreak waiting to happen.

Secondly, they smell bad, and there is no getting around that. They spend all day grooming themselves, but still have a musky odor.

And lastly, I turned out to be allergic to them. Even though I broke out into a rash every time I cleaned the cage or handled them, I still loved my pet rats and kept them until they died.

How are horseshoe crabs as pets? Can they stay out of the water for a time? I think they're cute, but I want to make sure I know what I'm getting into.
>>
>>2371658
They need a fairly large aquarium. They're pretty alright they can be out of the water but not for long and not very often. Cool pets that are an interesting conversation piece.
>>
I had two female rats once. One was all white and the other was naked. They lived ok with each other for a few months. Then the white rat started being shitty to the naked one, not letting her eat and biting her and just being a horrible bitch.

One day, I came in and the white rat had killed the naked rat. She had ripped her open.

I reached in, grabbed the white rat, and threw her out of the 4th story window onto the parking lot below. Fuck that bitch
>>
>>2371712

LOL, NICE!
>>
>>2371712

I know Im supposed to feel bad for the white rat too, yet I admit I can completely understand. Its hard thing, to reconcile cruelty by one pet towards another. I wanna say that I would be above such a rage, but I know thats not true.

Im very sorry for the loss of both your pets.
>>
>>2371763
Hey, I appreciate your kind words. I felt bad right after posting, thinking myself an awful person, but then I remembered how much sadness and anger I felt when I had those rats 12 years ago.

I don't think I would've been able to look at or interact with the white rat ever again after she murdered and partially cannibalized her "friend".
>>
>>2371777
>>2371763
But that that's kind of a very childish reaction innit? Not saying anon was an awful person for doing it, but that sort of reaction is what you might get from a child (where you a child/teenager?) who doesn't understand their pets aren't small disney creatures. Rats cannibalize each other in the wild when one dies, it keeps away predators.
>>

Anon if you want your rat to thrive and be more responsive, a cage like pic related would be a lot more appropriate. Also rats are social animals and enjoy each other's company. In captivity they usually do better kept in pairs or more.

If you can't afford a better cage, try DIYing something, even a temporary home's probably better than your current set up in all honesty.

It's not the best but you can get the 'You & Me Rat Manor Habitat' on amazon for under $70 with free shipping, it's big enough for two rats.
>>
>>2374810
Depends on the age/kind of cat. If you get a kitten accustomed to the presence of a rat then it might not see it as prey, but that's a huge if. The rat too might not even want to interact with the cat.

That's when you give it the toxo.
>>
>>2364859

>>

Because they have a long history as pests and spreaders of disease.

Which is unfortunate, because they're wonderful pets. Way better than a hamster or a gerbil. Their only real shortcoming is their tragically short lives.

>>
>>2364669

>>
>>2371777
Anon, rats will sometimes eat the corpses of their cagemates. It's a natural survival instinct so the body won't attract predators. Since hairless rats are fragile, there's a good chance she'd just died of natural causes and you found the white rat scavenging.

Also, you're an absolute fucking dick. Rats having dominance fights is a natural thing. You should have been a responsible pet owner and done something about it, instead of killing your pet in a tantrum.

Rats can't transfer anything to a human other than salmonella. All reptiles carry salmonella and it's MUCH more common to get it somewhere else considering it kills rats EXTREMELY fast if they catch it. They spread almost zero disease to humans. That's a myth.

I'd say snakes are pretty underrated too. My red tail boa is 8 feet of pure cuddliness.

Snakes are just one of those animals that people have an irrational fear of. People think they always bite, that they're slimy, and that they'll eat you or kill you when they get big for some reason. Meanwhile I've never been bitten once and the cute bastard has fallen asleep on me many times
>>

>>2380128

they don't all run but you're good to provide them with the option. they may also run when you are not around

>>2380209

mother will wean them at like 4-4.5 weeks. make sure you separate all males from all females (including sons from mom) at 5 weeks. if dad is cranky, watch and make sure he doesn't attack the boys. look up a chart to see how to tell the sexes. I mean obvs males will get nuts. also only female rats have nipples. sounds fake but I promise it is true

when you adopt them out, make sure they go in groups of 2-4 same sex rats, even if the adopter already has rats. might as well keep a boy to live with dad so he isn't alone for his whole life

good luck!!
>>
RATS ARE THE FUCKING BEST

Clean themselves like cats, play like dogs, prance around like deer, and can climb like monkeys. Really underrated. I think they get a bad rep from media and probably just general phobia of small things. Many of my friends say it's their tail that's the turn off, but I think it's cool almost reptilian.

I'm on my 5th so far and they've all been a blast, so much personality in such a little creature. Really made me look at life differently in a humbling kind of way. I think if any animal deserves to inherit the earth after a nuclear disaster, it's rats...and maybe crabs. I can't recommend enough.

>>2364817
That's real curious. My girls (who I'm sure are safe from the damage) like oranges. I do know they hate the scent of mint though. I'd use it to keep them away from our vents.

>>2364859
They shouldn't stink as they're very critical about cleaning and scent. Other rodents tend to stink way more in comparison, mine kind of smell a little like flour tortillas up close or like no smell at all. And if they're peeing a lot they're either sick or marking if it's male. My boy peed a lot until he was fixed now he never does anymore.

Aside from rats, I had a short tailed opossum. Was a neat little guy. Probably as active and affectionate as sugar gliders. Which isn't a lot but he was really nice and liked to crawl around me and sleep in my clothes. Their lifespan is worse than rats though. At least rats have a chance to live 2+ years.

I hear degus are really good pets.
>>
>>2364665
Those with rats established in their homes know that they piss everywhere and gnaw on everything. As much as I've tried to tame the rats in my laundry room they're still very different from fancy rats.

Roaches are not vermin. They are small, biteless, stingless, animals who do not spread disease, and that's true of all cockroaches regardless of species.
