They have almost no yolk in their eggs, so an unfertilized monotreme egg would be mostly empty.
they're also really small and remain attached to the mom in the case of the echidna.

I mean, they probably wouldn't be too different from the modern day platypus and echidna, but still

The ancient Gian platypus was about the size of a medium sized dog. It's bill had small teeth do gripping on to its prey, but other than that it was pretty much the same.
