Are these caterpillars able to survive having their butt eaten?
Let's say a predator does end up confusing the tail for a head. The caterpillar is still missing a good chunk of their body. Would they even survive the attack?

Nothing as extreme as actually getting it bitten off, though they will be able to survive a relatively minor injury to their ass more than the head.
Usually the false head is supposed to look scary and deter an attack in the first place.
