This time of year that is a young queen that's going to start a nest. They are native wasps and tend to sting less often than the black and yellow European paper wasp.

Is there a guide to locating their nest(s)?

I've run into several of these and I think they've set up shop inside my house. Are they known to use wood framing?

They will usually set up under overhangs from roofs or under anything that shelters them from rain.

If you have a bunch of exposed unsealed wood around your house they might just be collecting wood fibers to build their nests and not actually living on your property
