Pretty well all references to animals in Pokemon have more to do with an under-developed universe than anything else. You'll notice that the references to anything other than Pokemon drop off almost entirely (generally to just a background that includes corals) after the second game came out because they were more confident and able to use a Pokemon for anything they needed to show.

Best canon explanation would be that Kanto is the odd duck, rather than Pokemon as a whole.

like it does with humans it SUCCs off some energy, wastes material that they actually could use for freezing (and selling later) but mostly just because they feel embarrassed when they do these tricks while standing next to the owner.

meanwhile they completely ignore that prohibiting that actually makes them more aggressive and therefore more complicated to handle while at least this boost in aggressiveness could be easily avoided by just fucking let them do their thing every now and then.

Here is my premium horso
>>
>>2359082

They're unpredictable and surprisingly aggressive, so not very good candidates for domestication. Some have been tamed and trained, but not well enough that it's ever led to a viable breeding programme, they tend to be more trouble than they're worth as working animals.

There's some pretty interesting articles and videos out there from people who have trained zebras for riding or pulling, but even the success stories tend to be mixed and end up with an interesting novelty that can carry a rider or pull a cart for a little time, but needs very careful handling, has a low tolerance for humans, and tends to be very inconsistent and difficult to train.
>>
>>2360330
That is a well turned out creature.
>>
>>2359082
Reindeer have been used to pull sleds, elephants are ridden and all that. Tends to be temperament being what gets in the way all the time with animals.
>>
>>2360364
And were the horses of the past not aggressive before we started taming them? I doubt they were as docile as now
>>
>>2360380

Oftentimes it's temperament, but there are plenty of other reasons other ungulates might be tamed but not domesticated.

Zebras are weaker than horses and donkeys, and significantly harder to catch thanks to zig-zagging when they flee and loose herd ties.

Reindeer and moose are also weaker than horses, and require specific climate and diet and a lot more land to keep them healthy. Their rutting seasons make them dangerous and unworkable for chunks of the year.

Elephants are, well, elephants. They're enormous and require an equally large amount of food, space, and restraints to care for. They also mature slowly, and breed even slower, so it'd take at least 2-3 generations of carefully managing (and affording) a breeding population to see any real progress. Just not feasible.
>>
>>2360446

Not as much as zebra.

So based on archeological evidence, what we see in early horse captivity was that it was exclusively mares for a long period since they're generally more placid and have stronger herd ties. It was only after humans got really good at taming the mares, and the foals they birthed, that they were able to come up with the know-how and resources to start to take wild stallions.

Zebras, at their most placid, have the temperament of the stallions that were way too dangerous for ancient people. They're also significantly harder to catch, since they zig-zag when they run and have very loose herd ties. By the time human populations were advanced enough to capture and contain zebra in great enough numbers to start breeding populations, domesticated donkeys and horses had already been introduced to the area.
>>
>>2360472

Nowadays, it might be possible to create a domesticated zebra in the same vein as the domesticated Silver Foxes. But you'd still be contending with the fact that they're hard to catch, mean motherfuckers who would be expensive and difficult to keep in even a minimal breeding population.

The chances are pretty minimal that the resources would ever be put in when horses and donkeys are cheaper, easier, and frankly better than a zebra for anything it'd be asked to do.
>>
>>2360472
What about a gelded Zebra?
>>
>>2360484

Calmer but still unpredictable, as far as I've read.
>>
>>2359944
Thanks for the leads! I looked up both (really briefly, on wikipedia) and the ones I saw looked more like Friesians. This was in NYC by the way.
>>
>>2360446

Of course a wild horse isn't as tame as a domesticated horse, but it's still not as aggressive as a zebra and will tend to run rather than fight. We have Przewalski's horse, and they're reasonably tolerant of humans in zoos and nature reserves even though they are still wild animals - you're not going to be using them for pony treks any time soon, but they are safer to handle than a zebra. Not all wild animals are equally aggressive, some have traits that make them good candidates for domestication.

Why do the horses let you grab their tongues from inside them? It's weird.

Does anyone know if 40k in savings is enough to start a small horse farm? I imagine I could make money renting out stallions or letting people park their horso on my land.
I'm counting on moving to the midwest for this.
>>
>>2361709
Letting people board their horses might work out, depends on the demand whichever area you choose. Bonus points for being a convenient waypoint between horsey destinations; especially if you want to start a bed & breakfast too.

Won't get anywhere with renting out stallions. There is no shortage of horses out there. You'd spend all of your seed money just to buy one horse that has semen good enough to sell.
>>
>>2361717

Plus stallions require a lot more real estate per horse than a mare or gelding, since they need to be housed separately, so even if the upfront cost is the same they're still going to be more expensive.

You'll get way more return off a gelding you can lease out or rent for trails and lessons than any stallion a start-up could afford.
>>
>>2361724
I'm not gonna do it anytime soon but thanks. Should get more experience working with horses before I start my own venture.

Breed standards are a thing for a reason, if you can't register your horse in its respective breed registry then you've fucked something up.

They're absolutely registered, and the crazy skinny legs win all the ribbons the halter end of things. They wouldn't last a day hitched to a plow, but as far as the club is concerned they fit the standard.

Evidently a world junior champion, and I don't know how he can stand on those toothpicks.
>>
>>2361992
Why are these "breed standards" always so shitty and ridiculous? For dogs too, most champion german shepherds have hip dysplasia
>>
>>2360364
>aurochs
Seriously though, pretty much all wild animals we've domesticated began exactly as you describe
>>
>>2359082
They are native to Africa and by the time Europeans/Asians got there we didn't need the zebra.
>>
>>2360459
>aurochs
>>
>>2362020

Because an animal (generally a stud) comes along with a slight difference that's eye catching enough to win a ton of ribbons. Then everyone wants to breed with it/breed like it to win ribbons as well until the entire breed has changed. And then along comes a newer, more extreme animal who wins all the ribbons and around and around we go.

Sometimes, as with the case of the GSD, you even get leaders of the club so enamoured that they actually change the standard to fit this new 'ideal'. It makes fitting the standard mean next to nothing.
>>
>>2362033

Cattle have strong herd ties and run in straight lines, which makes them easy to round up in large enough numbers to create a domesticable population. They also have very simple diets compared to the likes of elk and moose, so they can be kept penned without much issue.

Not to say that Aurochs weren't aggressive bastards, but there's a reason they're in the very small club of domesticated species.
>>
>>2362043

Honestly, Auroch domestication probably went very similarly to how horse domestication went.

Herds of females were chased into pens so they were easier to harvest for meat than having to go off and hunt for one every time. Doesn't matter how much they fight in the pen, if it's strong enough it doesn't matter. Killing them is like shooting fish in a barrel, and the meanest go first. The more docile ones are allowed to stay, and eventually this allows them to be used for harvesting milk as well as meat. Rinse and repeat as necessary.

After culling the meanest off, and raising up the young to be used to humans, for long enough you end up with an animal who's able to be let out of the pen for various non-food jobs.
>>
>>2362050
This would work for zebras
>>2362043
I agree with the simple diets, but Im sure that even more difficult to corral animals can be captured - predators efficiently work out how to manipulate a herd's movements. That is another problem with domesticating lone animals, you just can't get a lot.

But zebras are not far more difficult than animals we have already domesticated. There's no reason they weren't except that the native people just didn't.
>>
>>2362052
Horses were likely also domesticated for meat before they were used for work.

>be prehistoric farmer
>raise horses for meat
>most of them are jerks

>some of them are not jerks
>they follow me around like my dog does
>get idea

>find nice colt
>breed nice colt with nice mare
>make more nice horses
>>
>>2362052

>There's no reason they weren't except that the native people just didn't.

There was plenty of reason.

By the time societies developed enough to domesticate horses, and theoretically zebra, there were already domesticated animals who could do the same thing (and better) in that home range. In particular, donkeys and cattle. Zebra aren't domesticated because they weren't worth the hassle then, and they still aren't worth it today.
>>
>>2362077
I was wondering when he would get about to saying what he really wanted to say.
>>
>>2362028

Yeah, but Africa was already swarming with a more tractable and trainable animal even in its wild form - Africa as a continent has multiple species of wild ass and is where the donkey was first domesticated. We still have wild asses around today, and we know they're more trainable and less aggressive than zebras even when they're not domesticated. Why would you, a hypothetical historical African dude, waste your time and risk injury breeding endless shitty zebras and trying to identify the least shitty ones in the hopes that one day you might get one that is as OK at carrying and pulling stuff as the perfectly good donkeys already running around?

It's like asking why Westerners didn't develop a small domesticated bear for use as a guardian - yeah, you probably could get a calmer, more trainable bear eventually if you were really invested in the process, but as a species wolves were far more suited to domestication.

Why does that horse seem oddly sexual to me
>>
Quick question for fellows Brits and any Irish guys if you're around - do you associate Irish cobs with Romani gypsies at all? Just asking because I've read some American sites about 'Gypsy Vanners' and while they're right about the type originating in Ireland, a lot of them seem to think they're strongly associated with Roma and give their horses Romani names. It's always been my understanding that it's mostly Irish travellers that used them for carting - maybe the odd Romani gypsy that happened to live over this way, but most of our gypsies are Irish and it seems like they're confusing two different things. Any thoughts?

What's the best horse and why is it the Friesian?

The way they trot looks really neat and unlike other horses

it's most likely a friesian
and it's 'just' extended trot. all horses should be to do that
>>

Extended trots don't tend to crank the knees up like that. I'd more say it's a park trot. It's high-stepping and flashy, and basically a mandate for any showing harness or saddle seat horse these days. He's moving pretty well, but yeah basically any horse could be trained to do it.

Is there anything other than mounds of hair that's making people go nuts for cobs lately? I can't seem to get away from them.

As long as you're diligent about heat relief (clipping, sponging, etc), and provide plenty of shade and water, the horse should be just fine.

But as >>2364866 said, if you keep up with clippings and heat relief they should be okay.

Still, it should be common sense that you don't approach wild animals. If you ignore all of that because you're determined to pet a strange animal, you deserve what you get.

Again, this dude is incredibly lucky. A well-placed kick, especially a good distance from a hospital, could have killed him.

Why is it that the horses with the most marvelous manes are usually stallions and why do most human dudes with a fuckton of testosterone usually lack head hair?
>>
>>2367039

>Why is it that the horses with the most marvelous manes are usually stallions

Because you're looking primarily at stud images. Mares are just as hairy, they just don't tend to be brushed out/photographed flinging their manes around because nobody's trying to sell their virility.

>why do most human dudes with a fuckton of testosterone usually lack head hair?

Baldness is about your genetics, and how your body is wired to react to a specific kind of testosterone, not the level of testosterone itself. And according to studies, if you're balding you're more likely to have low than high levels of testosterone.
>>
>>2367034
I see no such thing
>>
>>2367039
>human dudes with a fuckton of testosterone usually lack head hair

huh, I guess you've never heard of vikings
>>
>>2367039

Stallions have them because they're shown, and breeders want clients to know that the stud can grow that ridiculous but desirable amount of hair. Those "marvelous" manes and tails are a hassle to maintain, and frankly I'd bet anything they're done up like off-season show dogs when there aren't cameras around.

If a mare will not compete in halter class and/or is only going to be used for breeding, which is the majority of them, there's no reason not to keep her trimmed to a more reasonable length.
>>
>>2367039
Low test also has hairloss.

I wouldn't describe ponies as angry. They do have a healthy sense of self-preservation and can be stubborn/wilful, but so can donkeys - ever heard the expression 'stubborn as a mule'? That's coming from the donkey parent, horses tend to be more docile and compliant compared to donkeys and ponies which are more adapted to thinking for themselves.

We've tried a few times to get her and Charlie to interact, but it always ends up with lots of rearing and butthurt neighing - and when that much meat starts throwing itself around unpredictably, well, it gets a bit sketchy. Why do horses have such a cult following.

What makes somebody a "horse person"? I don't dislike horses, I just think equines look kind of weird as far as mammals go.
>>
>>2376902
They have an organ that unsheaths when they're alone with someone and they deposit horse eggs (or hors d'oeuvres) directly into the host. The eggs release a toxin that alters the hosts behavior and they can't get enough of general horse activities and encourage other people to meet them so the horse can also infect them thus spreading their genes.

You have two twin horses. You one large carrot and one small one. How do you divvy the carrots?
>>
>>2378101
place them on the ground, open the gates and get the fuck out as quickly as possible
>>
>>2378012
What's wrong with that foal?
>>
>>2378101
Snap them in half and they get the same amount. The carrots, not the horses.

I wish I could spend more time with the horse I ride besides during the lessons, but I don't even know where they keep him.
>>
>>2380925
probably in some stables somewhere.

If you own him and have access to the stables all day, then just go in and groom him whenever you're free.
If you don't, just ask if you could come in and groom him. They'll probably let you.
