They are baby turtles and baby lizards put in water with nutrients in it to keep them alive a little longer. They were used as key chains, they used to be like $2 a pop or something. People (chinks) would buy them and wear it as a key chain or whatever until they died. In America I think people mostly bought them, opened them up and then let them die in their critter carrier.

this bullshit general "consensus"among people that dogs are idiots and don't mind being treated like shit. They're incredibly smart. But nah brodie you don't have to clip their nails or clean their teeth or feed them correctly or take them on walks or play with them or keep their collar loose enough to breathe or even have a fucking doggy door but rage and hit him when he shits in the house because nobody was there all day to let him out while you were at work. the average dog owner is a mental fucking DEGENERATE.
>>
>>2355210
This bothers me too.
Whenever I see a chokechain I want to choke the owner and ask them how it feels.

I treat my dog (lab/hound mix, mostly lab) better than I treat people.
He doesn't wear a collar unless I'm taking him to the vet. I have 40 acres of property for him to run around and explore.
He's trained well enough that he just walks by my side without a leash, I have a leash and harness incase I take him somewhere that has leash bylaws.
Never ever hit him, only praised him for doing the right thing and now he is one of the most well behaved dogs ive ever known.
He is 10 yrs old now and starting to show his old age. It makes me sad to think that he only has 1or 2 years left in life.

>>

Sickening
>>
>>2355253
>house rabbits
What's so bad about having a pet rabbit?
>>
>>2355262
Clipping wings is very useful and can actually allow your birb more freedom than otherwise. An unclipped parrot could get startled and fly into a window, ceiling fan, pot on the stove etc, while a wing clip allows you to have it out of the cage to roam without worrying too much for its safety. Not to mention the feathers simply grow back if you let them, unlike declawing.

>b-but the bird can't fly like it was meant to!
keeping a bird as a pet is why it can't fly. Clipped birds can fly enough to land safely if they fall or jump from a high space, and that's enough.
>>
>>2355262
clipping bird wings isn't a big deal. The bird feels nothing. its like a haircut, the wings molt back.
>>

keeping a rabbit outside is dangerous, and they can die of overheating or being too cold, can die from fright, and rarely get the socialization they need from being outside which can kill them from depression. Indoor house rabbits are the best option for pet breeds. Or do you keep your rabbit in a tiny cage all day and just hate the rest of us for treating our buns like they should be treated?

If a home is bunny-proofed, theyre given good food etc and they are given outside time then the bun is most likely happy.

I clipped my bird's wings for the longest time and he was super affectionate, always wanting to play on his table top and explore his room.

One time I let him molt and get his flight feathers back (after some training to ease him into the fact that he can now fly) and he was a nervous wreck. You would cough and he would fly into the wall. It always seemed like he was on edge so I slowly clipped his wings back to how they were and now he's back to being a carefree cageless bird.

Muah anecdote, but clipping is not a black and white issue.

pic related. My "future tragedy"

I'm thankful the only pet store I've been to in years actually let the birds play with the toys on the wall and wander. One African Grey seemed keen on sneaking out behind us, but we picked a cockatiel. When we carried him out the entire store started hollering. I'm now too scared to even enter a different store from all the horror stories.

I know that feel, bro.

Although I grew up in ranch country where people will legit swerve to hit a wolf or coyote with their car. Or any wild predator, really. ;_;

I spent so much time as a kid playing out in the wild, hiking with my dad or uncles. From the time I could walk I was taught to be cautious about snakes, and to leave them alone but not fear them. I feel very lucky that I was raised by educated people who explained to me the role predators had, and what their natural defensive mechanisms were. As a result, I've encountered plenty of snakes, gave them space and never got bit.

Quite awhile later, in college, I had an urban hipster prof who had just moved to the far out burbs. He was keeping backyard chickens kept losing them to a combination of predators and natural stupidity. He bragged about shooting a couple of bobcats on his property "to protect the chickens", like it was a longterm solution. He was so proud and acted like it made him a real stockman. I was so mad I couldn't even stand to speak to the guy for weeks.

I kept chickens from first grade on and never lost one to a predator. It wasn't hard to give them decent shelter, shade from hawks, and an enclosed area to sleep in at night. I had that figured at age 7 but apparently a guy with a PhD in environmental science couldn't grasp the concept.

In the UK "house" rabbits are rare, no idea why it's a fad in the US. Just strikes me as lazy, like a lot of American pet habits. The weather is less extreme here I guess.

My two Mini-lops had a pretty cool double-decker hutch with separate sleeping areas. They also had a fenced pen which they had access to all daytime, whilst they got plenty of hours in the full garden semi-supervised. Even had a thick canvas cover that clipped on around the front for on a nighttime.

Enjoy deworming + ticks + mites from letting your meat animals run around in the shit all day. .
>>

Absolute bollocks, never had any issues with that sort of thing. I think the RSPCA would have something to say about it if actually letting your rabbits touch grass was so bad for them.

Calling them a "house" rabbit just seems like an excuse to never actually pay attention to their varying needs whilst they hide shit pellets behind the sofa.

Worm eggs are typically found in the droppings of wild rabbits, for your average bunny we don't have a lot of wild bunnies running past them on a daily basis. In fact the huge problem with wild bunnies is E. Cuniculi - which is a fungus that can persist for many years on grass after being exposed to wild bunny faeces/urine.

As for worming, bunnies can get Taenia pisiformis/ T. serialis (both tapeworms) - which cause no direct pathology to the rabbit as they are not the final host (dogs are), and is typically found on necropsy. They also get passalurus ambiguus (pinworm), which like most other pinworms is perfectly harmless to the rabbit.

As for ticks and mites, mites are transferred by direct contact, which as I said before your average pet bun over here won't have contact with wild rabbits. Ticks, yes, can happen.

However, I'd also argue that all of these (bar mites) could easily be transferred if you decided to walk over a field in your shoes and bring back parasite eggs with you. We also advocate in the UK worming our bunnies on a regular basis. I'd argue as long as the rabbit has a correct environment (read as large enough hutch with a good area to exercise in plus the right diet), then outdoor or indoor bunnies are fine.

What you might actually be interested in is that I went to an exotics veterinary conference early last year. There was a lady there who specalised in rabbits, who had seen a lot of pododermatitis from carpet burns. The issue is that pet rabbits, esp rex who have no guard hairs, have very fine fur on their foot-pad which is easily damaged- she had seen a lot of cases with secondary staph or pasteurella infections. So, both indoor and outdoor aren't without their problems!
>>
>>2356240
>Some dermatitis from being retarded and letting your rabbit run on carpet all day is worse than mites, ticks, tapeworms, and pinworms

Also, I'm not a filthy savage. I take my shoes off before going inside.
>>
>>2356240

Oh and various ascarids/trichostrongylides. But these would still be covered by most wormers considering rabbits are normally wormed with a fenbendazole mix.
>>
>>2356243

> Some dermatitis

I don't think you are quite aware of how serious it can get. As I said, they have very little fur there and rabbits skin is essentially like paper- in other words their footpads heal extremely badly. Some of her cases had gotten so bad that amputation had been considered, and these were responsible owners.

Parasites aren't all bad you know, as I said, the tapeworms + pinworms don't really cause any damage. It's mainly the mites/ roundworms we need to worry about- but hence why you worm your rabbit frequently.

Let me put it to you this way- your dog/cat going outside can catch both ecto and endoparasites, but you don't see owner's screaming for dogs to be stuck inside all day. We just take a reasonable approach to worming + flea'ing our pets. I personally don't have a rabbit, but you can't deny that there are pros and cons of both.

>>2356256 here.

Having just taken my dog for a walk, and given thought to another reasoned response, let me put it to you this way. I will start by saying that personally, as long as the rabbits needs are met, I can see the pros/cons of both indoor and outdoor.

As a vet student, I strongly believe in responsible ownership. For me this means being able to reasonably weigh up the positives of any pet animals environment: after all, rabbits are in their basic form meant to run around grazing for most of the day. Wild rabbits are lean, athletic and can give a fox a good run for their money. Obviously our pet bunnies are different shapes and sizes, but that does not innately mean we should ignore that they are essentially grazers at heart.

This is where the problem with outdoor comes, most owners who buy an outdoor bunny don't buy them a large enough hutch/run and certainly don't give them enough exercise. Thus, even with the correct diet + husbandry (which is another kettle of fish), they often wind up with an obsese bunny which comes with its own health problems. Outdoor bunnies with large enough runs are fab, in my eyes they should have enough room to graze on grass for the majority of their diet (important for dental health) and have enough room to run around. However, yes, they could potentially be exposed to parasites- but as I have argued with my example of cats/dogs- these threats can easily be managed with a good worming routine.

Now, indoor bunnies in theory are fantastic. The basic problem I have is that often the bunnies food is stuck in one area of the house, they are also not on a natural flooring (aka carpet/laminate/wooden floors) which causes problems of their own. Also, you are denying your bun of grazing, which unless you provide enough hay there is the potential for dental issues. Also, with the hay being all in one spot there is the opportunity to produce a lazy bun- aka a fat bunny.
>>
>>2356300

Now, back to the flooring, as I have previously said their feet are extremely sensitive. Their skin is quite literally like paper- having done a few sub-cut injections on a rabbit, I can't tell you how easy it is to tear their skin in comparison to say a cat. Rabbits aren't very good at adapting their gait for different environments, hence why we often see foot problems in rabbits. Now, for a sensible indoor rabbit owner, this could be managed - however I'd also argue that even an indoor rabbit would benefit massively from being able to go outside and graze in a safe (read as in a fenced in area) environment. Not only would it be good for feet, but it also promotes exercise and provides mental stimulation for the bunny.
You can’t just blatantly say that one is better than the other, they both offer positives and negatives. Before last year I would have said that indoor is likely to be the gold standard, however the feet issue + not being able to exhibit natural behaviour (e.g grazing) stands out for me, espically after that talk I went to. Personally, I promote for my clients that if they want to keep them indoors then they should have outdoor access whenever possible, or keep them outside with a large hutch plus access to a decent sized run. Really, rabbits are still considered as exotics, and we’re still working out the best way to keep them.
Take rabbit nutrition for example, most of our nutritional data comes from rabbits bred for meat not longevity! We are just finding now that most rabbit feeds aren’t exactly ideal, and there is research being put into how best to feed our rabbits as pets (which ideally should be just hay really!).

Anyway, I do apologise for the rant, but that's my two pence piece. Thanks for the debate, always good to brush up my knowledge on husbandry!
>>

>>
>>2356303
>>2356300

Thank you for taking your time to write this. I will admit I was rather blasé, it boils down to looking after your bunnies properly either way.

I think it is part of a wider American culture of being lazy/uneducated with animals though, bit like it was here a few generations ago where you could buy a puppy in a pet shop; I lived there for several years and saw it myself. House cats, don't start me on that.
>>
>>2355668
handling most reptiles is against their wishes, so keeping it as a "cool thing" is fine as long as it is taken care of.
>>
>>2356321

Indeed! We're all just after what's best for the bunny at the end of the day.

Haha, it's funny you should mention puppies, backyard breeders make my blood boil.

So, things that make me really angry.... Brachycephalic dogs. We had three dogs in today to be neutered/spayed- all three required surgery for nasal stenosis and an elongated soft palate at the same time. I bloody hate how much pick related is true.

>>
>>2356184
See, if we were to keep our rabbits as full time outdoor buns they would probably die of fright due to predators or noise. I can't do that. I have a hard enough time trying to not kill the poor baby due to neighbors slamming their doors.

Most good rabbit owners give their buns outdoor time, after proofing their lawn from harmful issues.

I just can't imagine keeping him outside, it's so dangerous here.

Size.
Good enough for one farm rabbit nobody cares about to be a psycho, and being overweight is a huge plus here. Also the life expectancy isn't a problem here as well.
Pet rabbit needs to be sane enough for handling and healthy enough to not waste money on vets besides obligatory shots. That means triple the cage size (and also a foldable rabbit run, unsocialized rabbits are useless pets).
>>
>>2356985
Yeah, rabbits need a fairly sizable enclosure and just in general require more care than people think. They're more along the lines of getting a cat or dog in terms of the amount of responsibility you're taking on, but people think of them as big hamsters with minimal care needed.

>>
>>2357489
Don't take me wrong, I agree on most of what you said! But I think there are sort of... strata of bad animal keeping, you know? Like take a guy who loves his goldfish, but keeps three of them in a 20 gal tank because a bad pet store assistant told him that's okay. Or another guy who doesn't let his pet rabbit roam the house, and instead keeps him in a cage, which is big, but still not enough of a place for a rabbit. They're mostly good people who mean well! They're just kinda undereducated on proper animal keeping, and go off the word of mouth or didn't research enough.

Then on the other hand you have, like shown above, people who sell live animals in keychains so they die a slow painful death from lack of food and oxygen. That's different than "less than ideal", it's animal cruelty, anon.

But calling for genocide over that seems a bit too much. Also "treating animals better than you treat people" seems like a kinda sociopathic thing to do.

I'm not an expert but first thing you should do is kept it inside the cage, on a place where it cannot hide from you or fly away. You have to keep your bird on eye contact level. This is one way for them to stop being afraid of you.

Also, perhaps you should trim her feathers to prevent her from flying if she always hurts herself doing it so.
>>
>>2358160
She has a pretty huge cage, and we leave the door open. She has her wings trimmed. When I say she flies away, all she really does is jump down flapping her wings, and then ends up on the floor with messed up feathers. Then we have to guide her back to the cage so she can climb back up on her own, since no one can really touch her anymore.

Idk, maybe she's just retarded and we can't do anything about it.

I know a guy that went out and bought a 10 gallon tank, filled it with tap water, and then wend to petco and bought two clownfish and a tiny blue tang about a month after finding nemo came out. He still to this day does not understand why they died even though I explaned osmosis to him multiple times. Luckily tangs are pretty expensive because after returning the bodies and getting new fish twice the store stopped giving him refunds. He now keeps an unknown number of guppies in that tank.

its just "natural" selection

Hamsters need deep bedding to burrow and large surface areas to run around (not just a wheel)

A rinkydink plastic cage with pretty colors and tubes and wires with paint they can choke on is not ideal for a hamster.
