Not OP, but you can differentiate between some species (or sub-species) by colour. Red Eared vs Yellow bellied sliders for example look pretty similar but are two different subspecies, you can easily recognize by comparing their colouring.
And of course, two different species often tend to have different colours.
I don't think OP meant that the colour determines the species, but rather if the colour gives any clues about the exact type of animal you are looking at. He might very well not know what taxa really are, most people don't.
So stop being an autistic twat about it and help him.

Red eared sliders tend to be a really bright colour when they are younger and gradually turn to black as they grow older. They'll still keep the yellow skin pattern and the red spots though (hence the name).
And due to the fact that sliders like to hybridize, it's kinda hard to tell what sub-species this is. By the looks of it it should be a red-eared slider though
