Instead of a chihuahua? Because cats are still only half domestic, and aren't excited to see you, nor do they listen or want to do shit with you. My pomeranians will at least alert me to visitors, while I may not see the cat until it decides to eat.

I call my fucking asshole stray cat all the time and that fucker won't go near me most days. She comes when called, lays in my lap and I've known and fed her for 15 months, eats every meal with me.
But cats are fucking assholes and she turned on me again because I wasn't eating palatable food for a cat for two days.
I hate cats. I regularly shoot at them when they come near, this cat is only useful to me in that she has the territory here and I don't get one of fifteen fucking strays up here spraying piss on everything.

Yes it's fixed and no it doesn't attack birds, just voles. Can't even catch a mouse from getting fat on steak trimmings.
Cats are 1/10 if they provide you a service back, small dogs are 4/10 when they shut the fuck up, medium dogs are 0/10 "take me outside again" lifewasters and large dogs are 4/10 when they aren't at eye level scraping your shoulders.
There are exceptions here, but this is my thoughts on it: Adopt a rat so you aren't committing to cleaning up cat shit or taking a dog out 7 times a day for the next decade.
