Update here.

So I kind of compromised the whole thing by putting Toji in with the females overnight - I was impressed by how he tried to climb out when I opened the critter keeper. However, the operation is long term, so I don't mind the Bruce effect kicking in.

I moved them to a separate ventilated plastic cooking container. I was actually amazed that Shinji somehow managed to chew out one of the ventilation holes, allowing him to escape. I caught him back around the pile of food, far away from the chair I put the plastic container. Kaworu was just dumbly walking around in circles on the chair after using Shinji's escape route. Kaji, docile bitch he was, continued to stay in the container.

I'm selecting for strength, path-finding and persistence. This means that Kaji and Kaworu are likely to be culled. Docility is not a concern.

What are your thoughts?

So I put Toji and Shinji together and chucked in a treat to have them fight over it.

The general gist is Toji got the treat and managed to hog it throughout, whereas Shinji constantly struggled, but at the end, failed to get the treat, retreating to his little corner to groom himself.

I repeated this a second time. Toji managed to hog it again, while Shinji again retreated to the corner to groom himself.

I actually breed rodents for mice.
I can tell you now one mouse to seven females in a confined space = zero babies.
Make mice get overwhelmed and the females refuse to breed and reabsorb the embyro. For better chances desperate the females into 3 and four and then let the males have them. I don't get why you have so many males. 4 males should only be needed if you have split colonies greater than 20-30. A good ratio is 1.4 or 1.5
