There are quite a few hooded crows where I live (big city). I have always liked those, so I recently started carrying around a small bag of hazlenuts (without shell) in my pocket to toss the crows two or three when I encounter one.
I know it's probably not really necessary to feed them in a big city where there are also lots of green spaces and when it's not cold outside, but I just do it because I like them.
I was just wondering if I should feed them something else instead. Not gonna carry around small bags of carrion, but I was thinking maybe a different kind of nuts (walnuts or unsalted peanuts for example) or maybe hazlenuts are just fine.
I'm not feeding them from my window but only when I'm out in public.
Any ideas? Any crow-related stories to share?
Crows will eat pretty close to anything (aside from maybe chocolate 'cuz it's usually toxic to birds but there've been videos of crows downing booze which is also toxic to birds so who knows really? it's not like biologists make a habit of feeding chocolate to crows).
You can hard boil some eggs and put them in a sandwich bag. Nuts are great, and crows love going for fruits & berries. Also suet, mealworms etc.

Sounds like a couple of good ideas, although I'm not too keen on keeping a bag of mealworms in my pocket. But maybe I'll try out a couple of different nuts and berries to see which ones they like best.
Crows are crazy about peanuts still in the shell. It's like crack to them.

I'll definitely try that next then.

Give them pamphlets with Edgar Allen Poe's poem on them "The Raven"
I've heard they like a bit of dark reading

Crows and ravens are pretty much opportunistic omnivores.
They will eat almost anything organic ranging from farmer's crops, washed up fish, hard shell tree nuts (using cars to crack open shells), carcasses (deer, rabbit, etceven human), or even live prey (baby squirrel, ducklings, kangtoads) .

Sunflower seeds and corn seem to work

Road killed mammals or fish can also work

Nuts and seeds like peanuts or even sunflower seeds can work; can attract other birds as well, like blue jays.

Hell, even cat food can work; may also attract feral cats as well

But if you want, you can mix these items into salad, like in this image. Just make sure whatever raw meat you put is taken out at some point to prevent illness towards the birds and perhaps even to yourself
