Help me identify this snake that I killed with garage door today

I'm pretty certain it is merely a brown snake (Storeria dekayi), quite harmless unless you are a worm or snail.
Otherwise, you have nothing to fear from them. I've encountered a few and they are quite shy. Its the type you can sit and watch, and appreciate for as long as they keep their nerve to stay. It is essentially the 'sparrow' of snake personalities.

Concur. Brown snake. They're cute little guys. used to feed one worms. One time I gave it a slug and it did a happy little wiggle-strike/nom-nom.

I don't think he broke the ecology. They are a sign that your garden's in good shape though. Plenty of worms making your soil better.
