Okay so for the majority of my life I hated spiders. But I accidentally ended up here, and now I can see the appeal of them.

Thank you spidey bros of /an/

pic is the prettiest spidey imho.

centipedes are still scary though.

Eh

It's the landlady I'm worried about. She doesn't really have beef with me doing it, but she's a very "Honest Abe" type person and I'm doing this both against he complex owner's permission and her knowledge, so whether or not I end up buying more, it'll most likely not be here. I don;t wanna lose a spider I've been yearning for for over half my life.
>>
>>2344647
I had the same problem but my landlord was surprisingly tolerant. I kinda just dropped it on him when I already had a little zoo going. He was quite alarmed and came over, I gave him a "tour" and he was actually ok with it after that.

You're thinking about releasing tarantulas in the wild and somehow becoming established, right?

If that was possible it would have happened already. There are no big north/south barriers preventing tarantulas from spreading further north but they don't, because they can't. It's just too cold for them.

Do you guys think A. metallica is okay as a first tarantula? Thinking about getting a 1/2'' sling but I keep reading that avic slings are really easy to fuck up.
>>
>>2345502
They are actually difficult to handle.

>>2345342
I found a new one today than I suspect it's female dendryphantes, that means the specie it's more than fine and if I find a male I can witness some never before seen mating dance.
>>
>>2345504
Really? Everyone seems to point to avicularia as the beginner arboreal species. Or does metallica behave significantly different from a. avic and versicolor?
>>
>>2345433
Make the top of the tank out of wire mesh for good ventilation. If you're looking to keep any mantis from the family Empusidae make sure it isn't metal mesh, as they could hurt their tender legs on it.

Keep some open spaces in the tank to allow molting.

Stay away from crickets, they are shit tier feeders for mantids.

4/8 of my chinese mantises have molted without a hitch. Hoping the other 4 are all sorted out by this morning.
>>
>>2345502
Depends. Do you have experience with other inverts?

>>2345507
Not really but people kept them too moist and without good ventilation for a long time and they really don't cope well with that. A box with good airflow (top + side mesh or lots and lots of air holes) and not too high humidity and they should be completely fine.
>>
>>2345433
How big is it? Not in gallons, the actual dimensions. An aquarium is generally not an ideal enclosure because it lacks cross ventilation, I'd get some clear plastic boxes instead, they cost next to nothing anyway.

There are several things you chould do. Most mantis species need to be kept solitary and you want to get them as small nymphs, your aquarium might simply be too big for that, at least initially so you'd have to set up some other boxes until your mantis is big enough to go into the aquarium.

There are some species that can be kept communally. Look into Gongylus, Heterochaeta and Phyllocrania (not too sure about this one). All of these, with the exception of Phyllocrania are considered "medium" difficulty though, not beginner species.

Other than that, do what >>2345510 said. Except just don't use wire mesh ever, it just heats up and hurts their feet, regardless of species. Get fibreglass fly screen. Try to replace as much of the top with that as you can. You're gonna have to DIY it.

Decorate sparingly, very sparingly. They need open spaces to molt, at least 3x the length of the mantis hanging downwards, 4x is safer.

One or two halogen bulbs on the top to heat it up, check the temps before you put anything in.

Feed with flies of different sizes, no crickets, as >>2345510 said.

Make really sure it doesn't get too humid in there, mantids die quickly in stuffy air (like I said, not cross ventilation in an aquarium).
>>
>>2345517
Nice m8. Good luck with the rest.

It might be a few days before they all molt though, the timing on that is pretty variable.

Speaking of her, I got her a new enclosure today.

Also, I couldn't help but notice her colors are kinda dim and brown. I know she's a blue morph, as I can see tinges of it on her chelicerae and prosoma, but it's kind of faded.

Is she getting ready for pre-molt, /an/? I know we aren't seeing the black bald patch on her yet, but is there any other indicators I should look for? She won't eat, but then again, I've been told her species isn't a very rabid eater. I know she's out of her post-transit grogginess because she walks around with ease now, so it most likely isn't that.
>>
>>2346698
>Is she getting ready for pre-molt
Could be, but be aware that the colors of tarantulas in images are often exaggerated, partly because of the flash, partly to make it look nicer. Especially iridescent blue is a lot weaker in person (unless you put your spider into sunlight). Also it's much more pronounced after molts and then slowly fades.
>>
>>2346698

Hi /an/, my gf and I impulse adopted a tarantula we saw on craigslist. We have experience with inverts but not any tarantulas.

Her tank was LITTERED with silverfish. If I had to guess I'd say there was around 20-30 of them living in it. I had to transfer her temporarily into a tupperware container with a cup to clean the entire tank. Now she refuses to use the hide I bought for her in favor of the cup.

Her previous owners say shes around 11 years old and that she hasn't molted for a year or so, and that shes only ever been fed crickets. I tried to feed her a dubia roach but she didn't seem to be interested even though the roach was right in front of her. Is it possible that she only recognises crickets as food, or that she's molting soon? She has a bald spot and these weird white patches but she seems fine otherwise.

We also don't know what kind she is, but I'm guessing a g. pulchra. Pic related is her, that's her cup.
>>
>>2346743
Leave a dubia in for 24 hours and see if she eats it, a small one though, she might be intimidated by adults. You can also try killing a dubia and offering that.
If she doesn't eat then she doesn't eat. She looks well fed, half a year without food should be no problem.

Also just maneuver her out of that cup, she'll find the proper hide at night.

Not yet.

Depends entirely on the species, for some it's the first line of defense for the vast majority the absolute last. They give plenty of very obvious signs before biting though, if you get bit it is always and 100% your fault and could have been avoided.

I'm looking to get my first invert pet, most likely a tarantula. I have a quick question that may play into my decision on what species to get. Do any T.s thrive at a range of 70-75f, 21-23c? That will be my room temperature and I don't have much space for the enclosure so it would help if I didn't have to be limited by outlets.

Most tarantulas do well at those temperatures but growth will be quite slow. Can you really not add one of these tiny cheap 10W halogen desk lamps? The heat from that would be more than enough to keep pretty much any tarantula and have it be active as well.

Sorry to break up the Comfy Tarantula thread, but I've got a bit of an ant problem and this thread seemed like the closest thing.

Somehow, ants are coming into my room through my bathroom. They're slipping in through the crack between the sink and the wall, I'd assume. They made a beeline straight for my mouthwash and created a line there, so I threw out the mouthwash. A few days later I got some cheap Raid ant traps for good measure, pic related, and laid them around my sink, but the ant problem hasn't stopped. There's no lines like with the mouthwash, they just appear to meander around the sink top. Worse, they're appearing to spread to my bedroom, and I've found a few on my desk. Do I need to up my investment and get better Raid traps? Should I put some bait down and line the Raid traps along the line that forms? Or is the colony already dying and I should just wait it out?

You really only need one lamp, which would enable you to keep almost anything. Not really a wire jungle.

I mean your room temp is still fine for lots of species but like I said, their metabolism will be slow which means slower development and less appetite but also longer lifespan. You really only need to get the enclosure 2 or 3 degrees warmer, for which even an LED might be enough.

The species you suggested are good, but watch this for a few more suggestions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j77bBFCOW30

Inform yourself properly about the care and read about spider ecology and biology.

Are those Petco mesh screen tops okay to have over a tarantula cage? I was thinking of getting a Brazilian black and I heard they can chew through even that metal. Is that true?

>>

> was thinking of getting a Brazilian black
I assume that's supposed to be Grammostola pulchra? If so, good luck. Beautiful species, but they grow so slowly that a decently sized one could set you back a few hundred bucks, if you can find one.

>I heard they can chew through even that metal. Is that true?
Yes. Depends on the individual character of the spider but there's always a chance. Won't happen over night though, usually.

>what top do you recommend over a basic 10 gallon aqueon aquarium?
I'd recommend not using an aquarium for keeping anything but fish. No cross ventilation really encourages molt to grow and makes it very easy, especially for a beginner, to fuck up the humidity. Get either a decently sized plastic box and add some ventilation yourself or a proper glass or acryclic tarantula enclosure.

So I have a question about Chinese mantids. Is it true they change color based on the environment they grow up in? She's brown on top and green on the bottom right now. I put a green plant in there in hopes of making her turn green.

Sounds great actually. How many do you plan to put in there?

Anyway, you might not need that much substrate actually. You can try to make a slope, quite steep, towards the back or from one side into which they can burrow. To them that makes the substrate a lot deeper (pic related, you should be able to get close to two feet). Substrate should be a mix of topsoil and clay, quite a lot of clay. Jungle soil is usually damn full of the stuff and they can dig in it just fine. Another part of the substrate should be sand.

They also need a bowl of freshwater (enriched with some calcium) and a bowl of saltwater. To get the salinity right mix it like saltwater fishkeepers do it. The bowls should be big enough for them to submerge at least half way. Clean the bowls thoroughly (boiling water) twice a week, you really want to keep these clean. Then they need a souce of calcium that's always available, like a cuttlebone.

Temps a bit above room temp are fine, humidity...well you don't actually have to care since your animals can burrow but the soil should never dry out.

You might also want to try the red LED thing to watch them at night.
>>
>>2348783
Crickets from all sources are infected with gregarines and the gregarines in crickets happen to infect mantids as well, except they don't survive it. They block the digestive tract and kill the mantis.

Kill a cricket and cut its digestive tract open if you feel like it. There are so many you can actually see them move with just a low power magnifying glass.
>>
>>2348504
>Is it true they change color based on the environment they grow up in?
It's actually unknown if any mantis species does this. It would be very possible but it seems like their color doesn't change and instead they wander to an environment that matches their color instead. How they know what color they are is unknown too.
>>
So Ephebopus cyanognathus slings are actually arboreal, huh?

Only one source mentioned it so I gave my two just a small piece of vertical corkbark but a day later they're both sitting behind it and have started making nets.

I read this: http://www.mantidkingdom.com/are-crickets-bad-for-mantids/

Apparently it has to do with the diet the crickets eat. What's a better food choice?

I'm looking at the food choices:

https://www.keepinginsects.com/general-care/live-food/

I'm sure she can eat flies, and probably small caterpillers. Would Petsmart have these? If not, where would I find them?

>>
>>2348915
sounds good, you probably won't find anything lower than that
>>
>>2348915
That's a pretty good deal actually. Prices won't come down for another few years I suspect.
>>
>>2348892
That's very anecdotal evidence. Also I do know that gregarines can be a problem and those will be in the crickets regardless of diet. Good food might reduce their numbers though.

If you care for the wellbeing of your animals you never give them store bought feeders directly anyway, you always wait until they've passed the awful garbage they get normally and feed them better stuff.

Crickets will eat almost anything. Mine get oatmeal, fish flake food, dried Gammarus or occasionally fruit like apple or banana.

I still wouldn't feed crickets to mantids, they're just bad in general. They bite and will kill a mantis if it can't defend itself. The females lay eggs in enclosures with substrate and you're gonna have to deal with dozens of these tiny little shits everywhere and the males are loud and annoying.

The main food for almost any mantis should be different sizes of flies (Small Drosophila, big drosophila, flightless houseflies, greenbottle flies, bluebottle flies, in that order). You can get all of these online at live food dealers. Pet stores should have both variety of fruit flies and houseflies. Some pet stores have green and bluebottle fly maggots but angling supply stores will have them for sure. Locusts and roaches are also an option but roaches can be annoying to feed since they hide and burrow.

Also you can catch stuff from outside but only if you're 100% certain what it is and that it's not dangerous.

Okay, I ordered some blue bottle fly pupae online. I might need to get something bigger eventually. Chinese mantises can potentially get six inches long.
>>
>>2348946
If given the choice they prefer smaller prey. Pretty much any mantis at any size I know just loves eating dozens of small flies. Something about their movement just triggers their hunting instinct and hunger. It's also much easier to regulate their food intake with smaller prey.
>>
>>2348946
>Chinese mantises can potentially get six inches long.
Absolutely not. Not even if you erroneously include the wings in that measurement. The body length is around 4.5 inches.
>>
So what do you guys use for T feeders? I've got a 2 inch b. albo coming in soon and I'm pretty excited. Probably gonna buy some dubia online to try, but I hear some Ts are picky eaters when it comes to roaches. I can get crickets from PetSmart or a local tackleshop, not sure which would be better. Should I bother with protein dusting or gut loading?
>>
>Absolutely not. Not even if you erroneously include the wings in that measurement. The body length is around 4.5 inches.

And that's what happens when you try to convert cm to inches in your head. 'Murica

>>2348961

Okay, I was worried a 4.5 inch creature wouldn't even be able to hold on to small flies with those arms. I'll just give her blue bottle flies then. I'd rather have those escape into my condo than crickets, anyway. I'm probably going to regret it when those crickets that escaped from me reach adulthood and start chirping.

I actually tried to handling my mantis for the first time today. She didn't try to jump or fly away. She just kind of walked around on my hands and arms and would stop to groom herself. She would look me in the eyes too. I think mantises might be able to make the association that two eyes=face, since they seem to eat be able to figure out where their prey's head is and eat that first. From stories I've read of people keeping them as pets they seem like they're quite intelligent, though nothing near the level of something like a portia spider. Portia spiders are crazy.

Actually they're looking at your pupil, which always moves tiny amounts so they assume it is prey. Don't try to hold your mantis to close to your eyes, she might try to go for it. Chameleons do this as well btw.

Man, now that she's /woke/ she a a skittery little thing. I open the lid and the force scares the poor thing the death. But then, if I touch her or pick her up, she's as calm as can be. Myabe she just knows my scent/taste after having picker her up a bit during the whole transition from tupperware to enclosure.

How do your spiders react to your touch, /an/? Do they get more aggressive? More relaxed?

>>
>>2349395
>Any tips on making his/her experience and mine the best it can be?
No handling, get two pairs of long tweezers, if the pede runs up the first one drop it and use the 2nd one to retrieve it.

>Housing tips?
https://desuarchive.org/an/thread/2323551/#2326525

Big box since they like to move. Sturdy since they will try to destroy anything. Secure lid since they are much more powerful than you think. Top opening because they are too fast for you to react if they decide to bolt.

>can he/she handle live mice at about 6 inches long?
Nope. No S. subspinipes could take that without serious risk of injury. It can kill it but I'd give the advantage to the mouse. Also it's simply too big to fit into the prey spectrum, it likely won't even try to attack the mouse.
I wouldn't feed anything that's bigger than 1/3rd the length of the pede (without legs or antenna) and not much wider. Adult locusts or dubias are perfect.
>>
>>2349395
I wouldn't give her vertebrates until she's fully grown

1.) How close is she to pre-molt? I now know about the thing with cameras enhancing a spider's color, especially with flash, but even with flash, hers are still dull

2.) I may have big hands, but I know she's gonna get bigger. Just how much bigger can I expect her to get? I've seen zebras that are about the same size as people's hands, but then again, I have big-ish hands (Around (8 inches from tip of middle finger to bottom of palm (20 cm)

Looking at the butt is a much better indication of premolt in NWs, she doesn't look close to me. Her butt will get black and shiny as the new urticating patch shows through her exoskeleton. How visible this is will depend on how many hairs she has left back there, of course.

I wouldn't expect more than 5" from her, and it might take a while. If you want something big and fast growing, you'll have to look outside the Aphonopelma genus (not that you need to, they're my favorites).

I've never had any of my adult Aphonos flick at me. Temperament varies by species, and individual.

They don't start flicking randomly as far as I know, but they do construct a molt mat immediately before molting, and kick hairs onto that. I hope you get the chance to observe that.

That's a matter of perception I'd say. Watching the grubs slowly evolve and turn the substrate to pellets or build their pupal cells right next to a transparent wall is kind of entertaining and finding dozens of grubs in the substrate after the beetles have passed away is quite an excitement to me.
I've had beetles which lived for nearly as long as it took them to evolve into imagines from first instar grubs.

Hmm I guess I'll wait and see how she is tomorrow. Put her in and she explored a little, then found her hide and has been way down in the substrate underneath it since this morning. I assume this is pretty normal for a sling/juvie? I dropped a small dubia with its head crushed into the enclosure so hopefully she'll go after that.

Should be fine as long as you keep the actual disturbance to a minimum. Open old container, maneuver sling directly into new container, done.

She went back in her hide after this. I think she had enough.
