How different was this bird from the normal rock pigeons that live everywhere in large cities? I'm wondering what would happen if humans went after rock pigeons with the same intensity. Would it be possible to drive the rock pigeon into extinction in the same way?

I don't actually want rock pigeon eradicated, I'm just baffled and saddened about the passenger pigeon's extinction despite the reportedly huge flocks. It makes me wonder whether mankind has the ability to kill any widespread, common species if they were determined enough, or whether there was something about passenger pigeon that made it more vulnerable than most other species.

There are plenty of railroad shipping records that documented the number of passenger pigeons sent to meat markets in the 1870s and 1880s. Pretty much nothing can survive long when it's being killed at the rate of 250,000+ per day.
