Not op, but is there a way to stop fearing dogs after being attacked twice? Or a way to defend myself from unleashed dogs? The first time the dog bit my eye, but I wasn't blinded luckily. The second time, my tooth was knocked/killed and required a $1k root canal. I was 11-12 and didn't provoke or touch the dog either time.

Ive been attacked a few times by dogs before.

It was the stupid neighbors un-neutered untrained lab and it bit and attacked me many times between ages 9-13.

One day i was playing lacrosse in my other neighbors front yard when the dog came and looked for attack, teeth showing and growling it jumped to bite me and i took my lacross stick and beat the shit out of it.

It never bothered me after that but strangely after all the attacks i never devoloped a fear for dogs.

You know, I used to have pretty bad cynophobia. Cross the road to avoid even the little yappers, practically climb onto other people if one comes up to me because I'd panic and need to get higher. Visit people's houses and they'd have dogs so I'd be standing on the furniture hyperventilating until they put the things outside.

There are still some dogs that I cross the road to avoid. Irrationally, it's the little ones that give me the worst fear and desire to keep away. I still stare at dogs when I'm out and about to make sure they aren't coming for me.

But for the most part I'm cured. I mean, I've had a couple of really ridiculous frights where there was a dog where I wasn't expecting one (sitting at the bathroom door when I came out after taking a shower, say) and I've yelped and backpedalled and then collected myself and felt extremely sheepish because I've just had an irrational panic response to my best friend of nine years.

Getting your own dog as a stupid wee puppy and then helping it mature into a grown dog is actually a really good way of curing a decent degree of that phobia.

The dog has loose skin on its neck. This is neither because of neutering gone wrong nor obesity. Some breeds just have looser neck skin than others. It can either be a fault or desired in certain purebreds and is also known as the dewlap.

The way the collar sits make it look like the skin is bulging on the dog in the OP, but it isn't. The breed standard for the Labrador calls for a soft double dewlap and it is completely normal.

I dated someone briefly who had a GS, I'm really not fond of them, it used to jump on me, mind you I'm only 4'11, and told my husband that I'd casteate him if he got one, if the costs didn't first. Don't dismiss the GSD out of hand. A placid older dog from a rescue will need a walk, a couple of meals, and to be let in and out of the yard, and should be pretty chill. Many already have basic obedience training, and because they're older they'll be less inclined to jump or cause mischief around the home.

You don't know what you're going to get with a dog straight out of the shelter, though, so be leery about dogs straight from the shelter that have not been throroughly evaluated.

Recent research has shown that the rate of hip dysplasia among papered German Shepherds is decreasing, to the point where it is lower than some other breeds, such as the Golden Retriever, so don't assume the dog's hips are going to go at all. Not prematurely, anyway.

I got over my mildly bad phobia by deciding one day what the fuck it doesn't matter and getting a GSD puppy. And yeah, I still have problems. But that dog became my best friend and he's napping on my bed behind me right now.

Unless the puppy was brought in with the mother as part of a raid or something, chances are VERY high it was surrendered for behavioural issues. GSDs are extremely trying puppies. And I mean that. They're smart, they bite more than many breeds as youngsters, and they destroy everything. You will either stick the dog in the yard for the next 8 years and do nothing with it because neither of you can handle it, or you'll spend all day, every day, supervising the thing and preventing it from destroying your shit.

GSDs start mellowing out at 5. Your husband wants one? He either adopts an older dog that are equally in need of homes as young dogs, or he doesn't get a dog at all. GSD puppies are hellions and if you've got cynophobia and aren't in a space to deal with one, then things will go south so fast.

That is some interesting misinformation, anon. Who's he been talking to, or did he kind of make it up himself? The emotionally hurt GSDs are quite possibly the worst because a dog that big that was improperly socialised or fucked up during its fear periods can be an aggressive nightmare that's too strong to be easily managed. And while a dog that's frightened might cower, a GSD's just as likely to put on a truly impressive threat display if it feels threatened with every intention of backing its threats up with a bite if the display is ignored.

There are few things as humiliating as dragging a lunging and snarling dog around in public because you're got to walk it but it has weird fears like motorcycles or kids on scooters or cyclists. And if you don't exercise the dog at all, it digs a hole in your yard big enough to be its own grave, chews through a door, rips up your carpet and tears down your curtains.

Gentle giants. Sure, when they're elderly.
