I gave you a (You). Do not mistake it as invitation for a debate or appeal. There will be none.

You can invoke terminology for as much precision as you like, but it actual language is for broad communication as we have here. This isn't a forum for academic debate. People are here to enjoy animals, and vernacular language is forged by consensus. You impress no one by invoking terminology in informal discussion.

Everyone calls hermit crabs crabs. They have shells, pincher claws and eye stalks, and are crustaceans. Taxonomy is not relevant to casual discussion.

No one calls prairie dogs dogs, nor confuses frogs with chickens or thinks pit bulls are bovines. You do not defeat the obvious with the absurd.

And again, that's that.

I wonder if this is something you can keep in an invert tank, or how big the tank would have to be.

Wouldn't be nice to have a small reef tank with all these beautiful animals. I think I read these are actually from the Pacific northwest. I think they are bigger though than the pic suggests. I would have to be careful not to put crabs in that fight with other crabs. Some shrimp might be nice too, but idk if they are compatible.

Strangely, this is making me hungry. I never liked soft shell crabs, but stone crabs would probably be good.

Dont worry, I wouldnt eat my pets lel

(I would ranch shrimp if I could tho)

Speaking of seafood, I thought I read somewhere that the Northeast lobster industry was experiencing a boom in supply lately. I wonder what thats all about.

They are cute by themselves, but seem creepy when you see swarms of them.

Not sure what these are. Or if they are even alive. I dont think they are actual sand fleas though, but probably related.

Thats pretty neat. I'll look it up then and find out where it hangs out. I never knew there were so many types of crabs. I bet they are a major component of the ecosystem.

I think the only pet crab (aside from hermies) that I ever saw was called an arrow crab (I think). I remember watching it eat and thinking how graceful it seemed. I will look later to see if I can find a picture of it. It had a pointy head and such long elegant legs.

I think I may have posted this type earlier, but the color looks a bit different. I'd like to learn more about these.

Thank you. I will look those up too. I have never seen those, not even in aquarium parks.

I think this *might* be a king crab, but it looks very different than the others. There is something called a 'spider crab' too, but as I said, there is so much diversity I wouldnt presume to make judgements based on appearance. Perhaps it is a King crab in a different stage of life.

OP starts a thread about 'crabs' like he ordering dinner at Joe's Crab Shack, and then all the children who just finished watching a PBS special and are suddenly experts because they read the phrase "'true' crabs" somewhere.

Its as pathetic as those children who talk about insects and then argue over what is a 'true' bug.

Yeah, I get it. Brachyura are distinct from other crabs in the scientific sense. If you wanted scientific discussion, you shouldn't wait till the middle of the thread to decide on specificity.

Jeez, I bet you nerds shit yourselves when there's a panda or koala 'bear' thread.

You deserve your tantrums, you really do. What a way to crap up a perfectly nice topic.

That is a Japanese spider crab, not a king crab https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_spider_crab. And it doesn't even belong into the family of king crabs.
Also why the fuck did you not expect nitpicking on 4chan of all places? There are shitstorms about nociception, turtle/tortoise and even the plural form of octopus.
>>
>>2347639
I made the thread specifically talk about crabs, meaning brachyura. That's why I posted discoplax and not a crab like cancer pagurus, because I appreciate them as animals. These "children" you're talking about don't exist. Because since when the fuck do children care about taxonomy or marine biology at that? YOU are acting like a little baby because your knowledge was challenged and now you're backing into a corner saying "LMAO I don't give a fuck anyways".
You really think people who enjoy zoology are pathetic? Then please fuck off the 4chan animals board and go back to the facebook one, nobody wants you here.

Peacock mantis shrimp. Also known as a thumb cracker or pistol shrimp. They have an ability to shoot water from their claw at the speed of sound to stun prey much bigger than them. Also they've been known to Crack thumbs the same way.
>>
>>2348810
>part two

They have a relationship with the watchman goby as well. This shrimp will dig a hole for the goby and it to live in and the watch goby keeps lookout and alerts the shrimp when some fish is throwing shade ready to eat them. Shrimp comes out and puts two in their head with the water blast. 10/10 nig noggin shrimp desu. Fascinating animal
>>

Mantis shrimp's actually have little "hammers" that they use to smash open shells. They are very strong and can crack glass. They also have eyes thousands of times stronger and more sensitive to colour than humans.
>>
They are pretty delicious, I agree.
>>
>>2348875
>They also have eyes thousands of times stronger and more sensitive to colour than humans.

They have more color receptors which enables much finer color distinction and they also sense polarized light but their eyes are definitely not more sensitive to light and they have awful resolution like all compound eyes.

Also they are not crabs.

It's something about the way you write that makes me suspect you're not old enough to post on this site.
>>
>>2348875
Also bullshit.
Not all mantis shrimp have "hammers", only the peacock mantis shrimp. Most other species have spiked appendages to grasp prey, which is why they're called mantis shrimp in the first place.

Well, well, well look at this. I stop posting crabs and the thread dies and all thats left is more bitching. Well done OP.

You're right about one thing, you challenged my knowledge. And I would've been grateful for the chance to learn. Its not that you aren't educated, on the topic of crabs at least. It's just that you suck as a human being and have no people-sense. You explicitly said 'crabs' when you posted your thread, which I now suspect may have been deliberate bait, since you claim to take terminology so seriously and were just waiting for someone to post non-brachyura so you could then switch up and launch a bitch-fest.

I am not saying people are children for caring about taxonomy. I am saying that you are a child for obsessing upon it for the purpose of attacking people trying to continue what could've been a nice crab thread and give content, which you noticably have been comparatively light on. Its also unfair to children, most of whom are better behaved and many do take a love of the study of animals because nature is a wonderful thing to study, not because they want to acquire arcane knowledge to attack laity.

Go into the pet store and ask for paguroidea and see what sort of reaction you get. Go to the seafood hut and specify that you want portunidae not lithodidae, and when you get your order, you will notice the waiter spat in your drink, and rightly so for being an insufferable pedant.

Crab means crab, and thats the end of it. But I do find comic irony in the type of personality of OP matching the animal ( a true Cancer). I imagine him sitting in a seafood shack, his hat pulled down over his shifty eyes poking out, eating with a fork in both hands scooping the meal into his mouth, then sidling out of the booth to pay the bill and then sidling out the door.

Poor OP, one radioactive accident away from being the next Marvel super-villain, "Mega Cancer"

Well, the more scientific folks could have had the opportunity to actually describe why the non-brachyura crabs were distinct from brachyura in an informative, positive way while posting brachyura. It would've been edifying for everyone.

But they didn't do that. They just bitched about terminology with no real show of actual knowledge on the distinction besides the classification, and barely posted any brachyura at all.

I too am curious. Crustaceans are such a tedious food, if delicious. I dont even eat buffalo/chicken wings because it is so much screwing around inedible parts for the meat.

I bet the babies provide tons of food for other animals though. I wonder how much of the food chain is animals surviving of the eggs and young/larvae of other animals. Insect young alone must provide tons of food for others. I would assume they are very nutritious. I think I read that certain grubs are delicacies in parts of Asia and Africa, and are said to have a nutty flavor.

I suppose it depends on the type of crab.

I wish people would share those neat designer shells they make for hermit crabs. I seem to recall they used to make pretty glass ones.

I wonder if hermit crabs clean their shells. I mean, I assume they poop in them. It cant be too sanitary carrying poop around. There must be some explanation from the crab-folk here. I read they are fun to keep if you treat them well.

I'll bet they have fascinating nervous systems
