"He doesn't have a planted tank" edition

Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

How large of a tank do i need to keep a few 3-5 inch fish, 3 or 4 maybe

would a 20 or a 20 long be enough? assuming i provide proper filtration and an air stoke and keep up on water changes
or should i stick with m 50 long
>>
>>2343123
What species are you thinking of?
>>
>>2343112
Yeah m80. It grows really fast in my tank. Had to trim it and throw it out.
>>
>>2343111
Maybe two generations.
>>
>>2343125
was thinking 2 or 3 native brook trout ( average size here is 3.5 inches though they will grow to 6 if theyre in large enough water ) and one small native catfish on cleanup crew
if i were to keep it in my 50 long i might consider going planted and keeping more fish in it since significantly larger
>>
>>2343123
>>2343135
20 is too small for what you want.

50 long would be great, though.
>>
>>2343137
i figured that, i just would like to move my tank into my room ( upstairs) and id rather not have 400 lbs of water on the second floor so i was considering downsizing a bit in hopes of getting my favorate fish ( already have him ) up to my room , But i wouldnt want him to be lonely

if i decide to do this set up in my 50 long how many fishes do you figure i could keep?
have proper filtration, and an air stone running constantly , also this upcoming year i will probably throw some water lettuace ontop of it for a bit of natural filtration
>>
>>2343141
I live a shittly built apartment second with with a 60 gallon and it's fine.
>>
>>2343137
>>2343141
id also like to move it upstairs so i can keep it in a temp controled room vs my garrage that gets to warm in the summer and to cold in winter
>>2343142
alright, il probably give it a shot then
have a dresser that can probably put it on
not sure itl hold the weight
then again my super shitty table its on curently holds it perfectly fine and i was SURE it wouldnt hold it

I scrubbed it down with pure vinegar and boiling hot water. Then I looked up how many gallons in an average tub and treated the water for about 20 gallons over that. Also made sure the temp matched his tank, and I'll be monitoring that while I do maintenance.

Hey, that's actually a pretty sweet idea. How long do you leave him in there? Might do it when I have to get a new betta -- my current betta is pretty old and it might just stress him out a bunch.
>>
>>2343321
I only had him in there until the temperature started to drop. I started with it at 80 F (his tank was 78) and I took him out when ot dropped to 77. I think it was about 30/40 minutes.

I might just leave that water in there and use it for a water change on the other tank and his own a little later. Or give it to the dog or something. I feel like I'm wasting it if I just dump it.

I tried my own thread for a few days, but I don't think I'm getting anywhere.

Long read
Can I get insight/halp?
---
My aunt decided my little cousin wasn't allowed to have her fish anymore. She wasn't responsible enough. Besides the fact my aunt is a shitty person expecting a 5 yr old to understand proper aquarium maintence, I was given the fish.

I have little knowledge but I know they need to be cycled, fed and housed in a few gallons compared to the tiny plastic filterless trap my aunt had them in.

There are three daimo tetra and one make half moon.

They were "tank" mates before.
So I kept them together. The tetra seem to leave the betta and his fins alone and the betta doesn't care about the tetra in the slightest.

Anyways.

I upgraded it from a tiny critters keeper to a ten gallon, filtered, and heated.

I cycled the tank, well my friend did. She knows WAY more than I do, these are my first fish and aquarium ever. Im 22yrs/o.

I don't want real plants as I've heard having and eco tank with a ten gallon is really hard for noobs. But I've been looking into some simple grasses for when I begin to understand a bit more.

I breed meal worms so I've been giving those to the betta (really small hatchlings that I kill before feedong) and the tetra pick at them too. They've also been getting frozen thaw blood worms pea sized amount for the four of them and then some 'tropical' flake food by Marina that I'm sure is probably a death sentence but it's what my cousin was feeding them.

Filter is a tetra whisper 20.
Heater is also tetra, 50w heater.
Water has been at 79-80F.
Doing 12hr/day night cycles with LED on a timed switch.

Besides a bubbler, proper test kit. Is there anymore I need? Can anyone lead me in the proper direction, have I done well so far?
Can anyone give me more insight.
>>
>>2343382

I was just corrected, and realize my aunt was incorrect. They're not tetra but Danio. My bad guys, like I said I know nothing.
>>
>>2343382
I'd take some of that substrate out of there, man. That's a fuck ton, and no water is going to circulate at the bottom, allowing pockets of harmful bacteria to thrive.
>>
>>2343382
>>2343386
Oh, and if you're going to leave fake plants in, try and get some silk ones. Those hard plastic ones will fuck up your Betta's fins real nice.
>>
>>2343386

How man inches should it be?
>>
>>2343391

I've read three inches is this correct? Because if so thats roughly whats in there.
>>
>>2343391
Anywhere from 1 to 2 inches.

I usually keep my tanks around 1-1.5"
>>
>>2343394
Someone might do 3 inches depending on what plants they're thinking about keeping, but with no real plants there's literally no reason to have that much. All it's doing is making it harder for you to clean out fish shit and food from the gravel.
>>
>>2343395
Okay, I'll adjust this all in the morning. I'm going to get the bubbler tomorrow.
Are the stones better then the decor bubblers? (ie, clams that open and close?)

I'll read anything else before I head to shop.
I know I should of got silk plants but in my town it's honestly a ghost town for pet products. I have snakes but I breed my own rats, thats how shitty it's gotten.

Thanks in advance /an/

>>2343397
If you do live plants there's few that aren't that hard. What I found out is I threw some guppy grass in a gallon bucket and forgot about it for a week. It doubled. Betta would like some nice cover like that.
>>
>>2343382
Don't think a bubbler is necessary, the ripples caused by the filter is enough to aerate the water

>>2343391
Just have the substrate cover the base of the fake plants
>>
>>2343403
>>2343397

Also another another mentioned in two weeks his 5 gallon was over run.
>>
>>2343397
Stones are better for a small tank, those clam ones tend to cause water to splash out
>>
>>2343397
Welcome to the hobby mate. Hopefully you enjoy it. It's very rewarding most of the time.

How did everyone start? My mom and dad had fish throughout my life. A 4 inch piranha with one eye they put in a bowl after my uncle gave it to them. Then some black moors in the same bowl after he died. Black moor somehow had fertilized eggs(i guess) and had little babies. Parents kept two piranha in a 10 gallon later on and they ate each other. After that we didn't have fish till I moved to Michigan. Got a shitty 3 gallon halfmoon tank with clown puke gravel for a betta. He died then we moved to a 20 long with glo tetras. Got me a fish poop eating pleco and other unsuitable tank mates. After that I was like huh I should read more into this. I felt like a piece of trash. I moved to a 55 properly stocked, then a 30 long planted, and now I have a planted 60 gallon and 5 gallon shrimp tank. I've been doing great.
>>
>>2343399
Has it outgrown the tank or outcompeted nearby plants?
>>
>>2343382
>>2343397
You don't need a bubbler. The filter alone is enough to keep the water oxygenated. A bubbler would cause water spots on the glass and lid, and increase evaporation, which means you'd have to top the tank off more often. Not really a big deal, and the fish won't mind either way.
The plants you have look fine for the betta. If a pair of pantyhose catches on them, they're likely to tear the betta's fins, but those look okay. Some silk plants may be more comfortable for him to rest on.
You might want to get a few more danios to make a better sized school, but keep an eye on them around the betta, since sometimes danios nip at fish with long fins.
Unless hatchlings are different, mealworms have a lot of chitin that could build up in the betta's gut. Bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia are all good whole frozen foods for them if you want to avoid dried prepared foods.
Like others said, the substrate only need to be about an inch or an inch and a half. For your purposes, just enough to cover the weights on the bottoms of the plants.

What exactly did your friend do to "cycle" the tank?
Did you use water conditioner when you filled the tank?

Also your camera is weird as fuck.
>>
>>2343468
No. It's in a 60 that's 24 inches tall. It's next to my crinum calamistratum and its doing well. When it gets too many pads I just snip em. It's already making a new bulb. I had it in a 16 inch tall tank and it still didn't outcompete anything or outgrow it.
>>
>>2343479

Hey guys I'm back.
I got the bubbler. Marina 200.

I picked up some test strips
Nitrates: 5
Nitrites: 0
Chlorine: 0
Alkalinity: 130
pH: neutral

However my water is showing to be really hard. I know my area uses hard water and wonder what threat this poses? How can I correct it.

I removed a lot of the substrate and could only find one silk plant. Until i can find more I'm going to have to keep some in for coverage

I am getting ready to try and breed Amanos, I wanted to know if anyone has had experience doing this. I have a berried female isolated to an aerated 1 gallon container, once they have hatched I will remove her and raise the salinity to just below oceanic. Once the larvae reach post-larval stage, they go back to freshwater. I'll be feeding them greenwater and powdered fish food until they are large.

From my research, this should work.
This leads me into my next question. Does anyone have a report of successful breeding of bamboo shrimp? (Atyopsis sp)
From my research, noone has pulled it off and they are all wild caught, which really bugs me. As far as I can find, they require the same fresh to brackish to fresh cycle as larvae. I just got a pair today and am hoping I can pull it off.
>>
>>2344089
As far as I have read no one has. Same with vampire shrimp which I'm in love with and can't find one for a decent price. Amanos are easier. Give it a go with the bamboos.

how much would a 10 gallon marine tank cost if I already have the 'setup' for it? filter, heater, lid, etc. I've heard salt water tanks can get pretty expensive, and I want to know approximately how expensive it would be for a small tank.
>>2344089
There's a gap in the shrimp community knowledge, which is the inability to breed shrimp requiring brackish water. If you can document your findings and tell us what's successful for you, you'll help to fill a gap in our knowledge, and maybe influence shrimp keeping for years to come.

given costs of live sand and rock at my local petco, I'd say $100 is a fair number. Those are about the only other two things you need. If you want coral a new light is probably in order, and get ready for sticker shock. Lights are not cheap. The hardest part in a tank that small is stable parameters, especially salinity. Start slow. Like. Extra slow. Take the time to get into a rhythm and see how each new addition affects the tank as a whole. If you do all that, you'll learn more than with all the reading you do.
>>
>>2344152
>given costs of live sand and rock at my local petco, I'd say $100 is a fair number
be aware that Petco rock is just concrete that's been painted with pink enamel and then left in the ocean for a few months.

yes, it has a fair assortment of worms and pods, but it's not live and it's not rock in the traditional sense. It's essentially worthless for filtration.

real live rock costs about $200/20lbs in the US currently (shipped from Florida). 20lbs isn't a lot, and florida cultured rock is shit.

if you can find Fiji or tonga or Haiti rock it's a lot nicer but you're going to have a minimum order in the $300-$500 range. Again that won't buy you a lot.

I have over $2k worth of rock in my 60g tank. Live sand is a meme, you put in dead sand and let the critters on the rock colonize it.

Has anyone here kept temperate saltwater aquariums? I live within spitting distance of the Atlantic and want to try keeping hermit crabs or something.

usually require chillers and massive tanks. Other than that it's rare but not unheard of.
>>
>>2344162
Would I really need a chiller for stuff that lives in tide pools? I might just dig up some mud and sand and see what does well indoors.
>>
>>2344164
really depends how hot your house gets.

assuming you have AC you'll probably be fine. Those animals like temps in the 60-70range, but tidepool critters can usually survive higher temps for a while.

temps will also depend on the type of lighting and circulation you use. As long as you're not running reef lighting or huge wavemakers you'll probably be ok. LED's and surge devices make good substitutes.
>>
>>2344164
>I might just dig up some mud and sand and see what does well indoors
there's a lot of animals that survive in both temperate and tropical areas out there. So you'll find some species that will do just fine. A lot of them are the same animals that you'd find in the mud and sand of Cuba or the Bahamas.
>>
>>2344165
>>2344166
Sweet. Care and maintenance will be the same as other saltwater aquariums right? Maybe it'll take a little longer to establish because of the cooler temperature?
>>
>>2344168
>Care and maintenance will be the same as other saltwater aquariums right?
depends what you're keeping.

if you can keep a reef tank alive for a few years you should be able to keep most coastal inverts alive. Fish are a lot easier.

yeah, it's not bad if you don't have to ship it overnight from the coast.

I think Fiji and Tonga have outlawed rock collection though.

>the plants grow fine
Plants use different wavelengths of light than photosynthetic organisms in the ocean. This is because water filters out most of the wavelengths plants use, so corals and coralline algae use blue light exclusively while plants use more reds and greens.

Glass also filters out a lot of the UV light corals need to survive, so passing sunlight through several layers of glass in the window and the tank renders it useless for growing cool marine organisms. It doesn't stop it from growing algae that use green and red light though, so sunlight through a window will grow tons of hair algae and cyanobacteria which will also choke out corals and coralline algae by blocking light.

reef tanks require special actinic lamps to feed corals and beneficial algae. Luckily we're seeing the prices drop on LED's with actinic lamps lately.
>>
>>2344653
Thanks for the detailed reply.
>>
>>2344663
you're welcome.

I've been running a dimmable 165w broad spectrum reef LED fixture that's about 1/2 actinic and UV on my 60g tank. I think I paid $89 for it on ebay.

it would be way too big for a 10g, it's actually too strong for my 60g, but if you shop around I'm sure you can find something appropriate in the $20-$50 range. Just avoid sunlight, it grows algae like you wouldn't believe.

Some time back people realized you could add CO2 and plants would actually grow instead of just dying slowly. Also light bulbs got better. And there not wild collected so less unwanted pests. but they don't look as good when they arrive in store. 25 years ago it was legitimately just watching plants die slowly. and salt water fish were a crazy gamble. when the collected them by gassing the water.

heater, hob filter, reef lighting.

My pond filters will sit outside the entire freezing winter out of the water and the cycle is very short when I restart in the summer. Also, despite my best efforts to convince him otherwise, my fiance got an Oscar.

It appears to be blind, as it bumps into everything and has to mouth the bottom of the tank to find food. It doesn't respond to hand movements at all, nor did it respond to other fish (we put Sinbad in and he didn't do anything until Sinbad bumped into him and it flinched/jerked away)

It's eyes are also strange, and I wanted to ask you guys if this was something normal with Oscars . It has large white round circles, but inside the circles is completely see-through, and you can see the inside of his head/organ type tissue. It looks hollow until he turns and you see the clear glass like part that goes over the eye.

they've extremely shy, extremely skittish, and they will quickly shred anything that moves. The spend most of the day hiding or just sitting in a corner, but that doesn't mean they won't kill and eat other fish. For a sadist that likes watching fish fight, piranhas are a terrible choice because they kill so quickly you can't see it.
>>
>>2345937
200 is fine for a lot of fish. But he recommended pirhanas witnout having experienced them. They are skittish and not very aggressive. As mentioned before dovii are very aggressive and get large.
>>
>>2345989
False. Unless you have dealt with time then don't open your mouth. They can be kept with a variety of fish with zero problems. People sometimes keep them with neon tetras. Not once have I been attacked by them either when doing maintenance. Shut your yapper.

I had tetras with a shebunkin once and had to remove them, they wouldnt leave her alone, the poor thing.

So I put them in with a betta, who was not please with this encroachment of a bunch of thugs in his quiet little bowl. He backed against one side and just watched them suspiciously.

They eventually got full of themselves and worked up the nerve to approach. Finally one had the balls to nip.

At which point...

The betta fanned up like a spring loaded umbrella and feigned a brief charge, sending the little brutes scattering in all directions in a wee fishy panic.

The shebunkin got a new tank, and the tetras learned their lesson: stay off old man Betta's lawn.

Fish want to swim side to side, not up and down. Even if that vase is a regular cylinder, it only has as much "floorspace" as a standard 2.5 gallon tank. It would also be incredibly difficult to keep properly oxygenated.
Another concern would be that the center of gravity would be fairly high up, so you'd have to be careful about tipping it.

Maybe with an air stone in the bottom and some long, skinny branches it would be okay for shrimp.
>>
>>2346122

>>
>>2346347
In something that size I'd suggest simply building the schools you already have. If you want to stick with danio rerio you can get some of the zebra or gold type for a little variety. You could also get some Glofish for more color options, but they're expensive.

If you really want another species in there, look for a small, peaceful, non-schooling bottom-dweller. Peacock gudgeons would be one option.

>>2346358
Do you mean celestial pearl danio? Pearl danio are fairly bland looking.
CPDs are pretty small. If Anon's pearl gourami ever decided to be an asshole it might be bad news for them.

>>2346368
Catch as many of them as you can in a net and prop it on the rim of the tank so they stay contained. Infusoria or green water be the best option for food, but those take a few days to culture, so in the meantime you can pinch off little pieces of boiled egg yolk and crumble them into the tank.
If you have some moss in a different tank, you can put that in the net with them.

In the interest of frank honesty, it's probably not going to work out. Larval stages are just really difficult to keep alive. Either way, best of luck to you.

Yea, I took Sinbad out. I didn't like the idea to begin with, but after a minute of checking him out, then checking the plants out, he started that pacing shit again and got himself so worn out he laid down on the bottom.

So now I'm ordering him that vase.

But yea, been watching that Oscar and it is blind as shit. Can't see fucking anything. I can touch him on the nose, and he touching all around the ground with the bottom of his jaw looking for him food. And bumps into everything head first.

Poor thing.
>>2346460
What? No, I was talking about his fish. I let him test how the other fish would react with Sinbad (with me monitoring closely) because the oscar is only about an inch bigger than Sinbad. I wouldn't let him kill my fish, and I told him that. I told him I'm not letting my fish die just for an experiment.

He wasn't really understanding how big and dangerous Oscars are until I got snippy with him like that, and he apologised.

HELP!! I came home from being gone one night and I see my Betta is really sick. I think it could be dropsy. He has lost his pretty red color and is both bloated and lethargic and his scales look buldged out in certain angles. It's late at night and I don't have access to Epsom salt or antibiotics until the morning. Is there ANYTHING I could do to possibly save him. He's been the best fish and he's 2 years old.
>>
>>2347009
In most cases, dropsy is the result of a bacterial infection caused by bacteria Aeromonas. Aeromonas is a bacteria that is commonly found in most fish tanks but it is only like to infect fish that are stressed due to overcrowding or poor water quality.
