They're intelligent, love to live where people are and actually push really hard to become pets.
Is it because they try too hard?
>>

Too THICC

They are our pets already without us knowing, why make it complicated?
>>
theyre really cute !

they're the autismos of the animal world
>>

I dont know this, but I would assume their is some risk for cross-contagion.

You have the teeth and claws like a cat or ferret, but the dexterity of a primate, the irrationality of a squirrel and the varied diet of a rat.

Combined, this means it can make the irrational decision to chew on bio-hazardous waste because it suspects it might be food, get the substance into its claws and teeth and then want to 'play' by clawing at you.

A cat is less likely to fixate on wastes because it has a distinct narrow sense of food, a dog will investigate anything but doesnt have the dexterity to manipulate it with claws. If its not food, it moves on.

That is just my theory. Squirrels make chaotic pets if attempted; I imagine its only worse if the animal is more given to curiosity and thinking garbage is a buffet.

Perhaps the one word that makes or breaks the audition to the pet world is 'house breaking'. A racoon is not a candidate for a cage, and I dont suspect it can be housebroken either.

In the co-habitation of animals and humans, what to do with poop is sort of a big deal.
>>
>>2341418
>and I dont suspect it can be housebroken either.
Ive known a few people who have kept them as pets, and every one of them were house trained and used litter boxes like a cat.
>>
too bad they take "house-breaking" way too literally
>>
>>2341407
canines shred shit too if they can't make an easy quick kill.

The reason raccoons haven't been domesticated is because theres no reason to, they don't have a use outside of being a pet like the other domesticated animals. Maybe in another 5000 years. Also stop making these fucking threads

In my state I can get a raccoon for a pet. I'd need to go through Fish & Wildlife to get a permit first though, but I heard those are only like five bucks. How they get you is it may or may not be legal to purchase or import a raccoon here. I know with skunks I can legally own one, but am banned from buying them. It's a cruel catch-22. People have to go to other states and drive them back home (can't ship them in) and then I don't know all the red tape you have to go through to bring an out-of-state animal across the border. But if you succeed you can keep it.

if medium sized dogs were the best in mouse catching, we wouldn't even have our cats or they would be as niche in use as medieval ferrets. Now the real cat selection breeding is just about 100 years old, so you can say domestication for the purpose of domestication is of about the same age. So, give it 100-200 more years

That picture is obviously shopped. Also, just because racoons (and humans) CAN eat something doesn't mean they SHOULD. Giving a properly balanced diet is one of the most important jobs of owners

no. The reason being is tanuki is a duality word and it relates to anything around the size of a raccoon dog. Japanese badgers are also known as tanuki in some precinct areas, more than likely this is where that large scrotum thing came from too as badgers tend to have above average testicles to body scale
>>
They're just difficult to rear in captivity. They have hands that can operate most basic latches and wreck havoc on any switches or buttons you have around your house. You have to put covers on all your exposed wiring like you have a parrot in the house. They're too smart, they get bored and you have to litter your house with toys for stimulation. Their diet is finicky, and requires a wide array of nutrients from both plant and animal matter. They'll take shit from you and hide it in odd ends of your house, they'll pull out your drawers and cupboards and scatter shit all over the place looking for food. They will always be a small risk to anyone who isn't the owner (and health authorities will put down pet raccoons if anyone gets hospitalized - they don't give a fuck about your feelings).
>>
>>2341508
Tanukis are actually really fucking friendly and don't go crazy once they reach sexual maturity like racoons. The main problem is they're nocturnal, need a lot of space and are hard to own outside of Japan. Plus dogs and many other animals are mistreated by the average retard so it's for the best they're not domesticated.

When I was very young I used to trick or treat at a house that had a pet raccoon. Thing was fat as shit waddling around. They had a gumball machine with some kind of treat in there and the coon would put a quarter in and turn it and get the treats to come out. As a eight year-old that was pretty damn impressive.

It is deceptive. They run a clever tourist industry, but in reality, the entire southeast tip of Florida is one long city stretching from Key Largo all the way up the coast. The further south you go, the more its like some sort of surreal modern colony among a third world. You can drive 3 miles without turning and see ghettos, luxury condos, wasteland and McMansions. And thats the civilized part.

Then there is the everglades. If you go more than 25 miles inland, you are in something out of a LOTR movie. Even scarier than the landscape and animals is that people actually live in there.

Ive seen grasshoppers that were neon colors. Plants that appeared like something from the Jurassic era. Once I thought I got buzzed by a small bird once only to realize it was a beetle half the size of my fist.

Like they say, the nice thing about Florida is that it is so close to the United States. Thats the flattering side. I'll shut up before I start describing the locals. Floridans are to Americans how Americans appear to non-Americans.

>>2341358
I think it would be cool if some families all over the word create domesticated species over a long time. like these russian people do with foxes. We could have all kinds of cool pets like larger more intelligent ravens, racoons and so on
>>
I raised three as pets, they are fun until they aren't. Their jaw might as well be a vise grip and they can basically turn around in their skin to bite you when it comes time for shots and nail trimmings. They also have real weight problems and get fat very very easily. They get into everything, and will hide your stuff if they take a liking to it.

Definitely not a good pet for people who have a job, or kids, or other pets, or anything that takes up any of their time at all.
>>
>>2343792
So basically only old women should collect raccoons instead of 50 cats?
>>
>>2341358
It takes many years to fully domesticate a species. There was no need to do so with coons.

I'm very uneducated about these animals, and this is the first I've ever heard of them being that close, so by no means would I be considered an authority on the subject.

The only "forest" we have worthy of the name is the Hoosier national forest, and even then is a joke compared to what they have up north.

>>2344672

I work at a fairly large park in northern central Indiana over the summers and I have never heard of anyone seeing them around. Grew up in Newton County and spent a large percentage of my time outdoors and never saw one or even heard of one until this thread.
>>
>>2344718
Indiana has lots of farm ground. It's understandable that we don't have large swaths of old growth forests, especially up north. We do have places, just on a smaller scale.
To say we have none is not correct when state parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and other public access sites can be found within a 1-2 hour drive of anywhere in the state.

The ones that made it to the US are usually escapees from Canadian fur farming operations - or simply were dumped into the wild whenever environmental groups get such a place shut down.

They cover an incredibly large amount of land and can swim long distances when seeking out new territory.

When i was a kid we used to fish at this private lake near my house. One time i had a loaf of bread that i was trying to catch carp with and a racoon came over and sat near me watching. After one time of watching me open the bread and get a slice out the racoon waited until i was a few feet away then walked over opened the plastic bag with his hands, reached in, took one slice out, then pushed the plastic back down like he was closing it. Then he went over and dunked the bread in the water and ate it. He kept coming back, like 5 times he came over opened the bag took out one slice and closed the bag again. He was just like hey don't mind me bro just eating a little lunch lol. I'd see him down there all the time when i was fishing after that looking for a free meal. Sometimes he would sit there and just watch us like he was studying things. They are smart little fuckers.

The amount of enthusiasm an animal gets from the act of eating is interesting. As with sex, theres no reason to assume the creature has an understanding of what the function of a drive is. Not all animals may interpret it the same way.

So I wonder where the relish comes from, simply filling the stomach, hormonal relief, or is there an association of joy with particular tastes.

Indeed. Make sure you check the Florida Man twitter though, they are all true (and terrifying) stories of the criminally weird.

The reason people like to associate Florida with its beaches is because if you aren't near a beach, you are either in a swamp, in a former swamp, or in a swamp waiting to happen. You dont have to be right on a coast, but you dont want to be far from one.

The "Everglades" makes it sound nice. But when you have man-eating lizards roaming around and -literally- a growing python infestation problem spreading like wildfire, you dont want to plant roots in a rural area and then parse the scholarly argument of whether your home is more in a swamp or in a jungle.

You dont need beach-front, but stay close to the coast. If you do find quasi-civilization in the north interior like Orange county, you are surrounded by ponds absolutely everywhere, and instead of dangerous animals, you have the people.

But yeah the real estate can be high. There are many less glamorous, highly underated areas in the north of the state also, both coastal and inland. But beware, summers can be utterly brutal.

Those are legitimate issues. I recall a kid in the south being killed by fire ants, and the mosquito danger is well known. The zika issue is pretty much under control, for now.

There is also the weather to consider, it isnt all nice.

Regarding botflies- I am not aware of any presence in the US/Florida of the type you are probably thinking of.

I think there have been freak cases, but they were excpetional. The type you are probably thinking of was almost certainly introduced to Florida at some point because every damn creature from the hemisphere seems to arrive there eventually because of shipping, smuggling etc. But it would appear that the human parasitic variety has never been able to get a footing in the ecosystem. The cattle and northern variety in other areas of the US are a different story.

On the bright side, if you ever did get a botfly problem, you are a human in the modern US and it can be quickly treated, unlike the advanced horrors you may have seen in animals and in less fortunate parts of the world. They are easily prevented, and easily removed with a bit of iodine. The real danger would be not noticing, and that would more likely someone of age or other medical conditions who may not be as sensitive to wounds, like diabetics.

I love raccoons so much. I have a giant birdhouse in my backyard for owls and this one raccoon has been living in it for a couple years now.

It even had babies one time and seeing them made my days a little bit better.

Fuck opossums though they're no as cute in real life as some pictures make them. Also they're super mean unlike raccoons who will be bros for the most part.

That's not the reason. Tanuki scrotums are good for making gold leaf, the leather is perfectly pliable and stretchy.

Tofugu explains it:

>How did tanuki come by this unique magic? It's got nothing to do with sexual >prowess (this is never a feature of tanuki legends). The generally accepted >?>explanation is a lot less fun for the tanuki. In the old days, metal workers in >Kanazawa would wrap gold in the skin of tanuki testicles when making gold leaf. >You want to hammer your gold to the thinnest sheet possible. So you need a skin >that can stretch a long way without breaking. It was said a tanuki scrotum could >reach the size of eight tatami.

>What clinched it, though, was probably the pun: kin no tama "small ball of gold" >and kintama, slang for testicles. Tanuki scrotums began to be sold as wallets and >lucky charms, said to stretch your money the way they stretched the gold.

I live in Japan and absolutely adore tanuki.

>>
I did some research for these people that want to keep raccoons as pets, the rabiës and disease transferring is no big deal as you can shot against that.
The problem is that raccoons are too curious and strong willed to be pets. From what I read they will plunder all the cabinets, scratch up your furniture and throw a hissy fit at you if you get angry at them for it. We need more domestic generations until we have a breed that is low maintenance and safe.
If you really need to take a pest animal in your home, consider these. They are already safe and docile enough to keep as pets.
Offshore Georgian ones got a gene that makes thme live 50% longer, so your pet Possum can become 6.

Cats eat the grain-stealing mice and rats that infest ships and barns.

Dogs hunted alongside us, ate our scraps, and guarded our backs.

Horses, donkeys, and camels are beasts of burden.

Ferrets could also be used to hunt rats and run cables through tunnels.

What use is a raccoon? They aren't pretty and they are too big to keep in cages or tanks like birds or fishes.

Raccoons have domesticated, in the past. In the first half of the twentieth century, raccoons and skunks were actually pretty popular as household pets, and were sold in pet stores.

But around the 1960s, cities started enacting zoning and animal husbandry laws that made it difficult to keep them as pets, and the fashion kind of died out.

Most animals were domesticated for specific reasons. Ie. Dogs for hunting/guarding, cats for pest control, and even Guinea Pigs for meat. It's only relatively recently domestics have been kept as pets, which is why some dog breeds have trouble adapting to pethood and not doing what they were bred for.

The issue with domesticating raccoons is simply there's no fucking reason to do it. I guess now you could do it if you wanted to have one as a pet, by why waste the effort? The recent domestication of the fox is still not profitable or widespread, so what incentive is there to repeat the process with an animal most consider pests?
>>
>>2359484
minor point - domesticated guinea pigs are still humungous assholes, though not nearly as much as a wild one. the same can be said for dog breeds that are still raised for meat - they is no real need for extended interaction for them so they aren't nearly as tame as working dogs or cats.

Animals that have been farmed for their fur are even less tame - which would be the practical purpose for a raccoon.
>>
>>2359484
>>2359491
minor correction - the domesticated guinea pigs I was referring to are Cuy - specifically the ones kept for meat who are considerably larger and have more violent dispositions than pet store guinea pigs.
>>
>>2341358
Because they lived on north america.

Before the Indians could advance to the point of a settled agricultural based existence Europeans showed up.

I do agree with this >>2359484 anon, not sure if they would bother to tame raccoons as they are seemingly useless to primitive peoples.

Hey!! What about Cozumel Raccoons? They're somewhat smaller, and maybe less conniving.

I'm not sure if they should be taken in though, considering that they're critically endangered, and if there was a seemingly-established domestic population, tourism-developers would treat this as an excuse to roll over the last bit of their habitat proudly.
>>
>>2346280
Probably not.

You'd think they should, I mean, different smell, plus different size.

But, I had a cat and dog that were the same size, and they seemed to pick up considerable behaviours from each other. So no wonder that grubby one there slips under the radar.

But if they had advanced that far, they presumably would have travelled to Japan and just pick up some dogges.

Or acquired some Eskimo Dogs. Or they could have domesticated wolves.

Raccoons wouldn't be particularly useful in place of cats because they're too omnivorous.

I think so too. I have to call bullshit on that. There is absolutely no way to reconstruct imagery from nerve impulses. People like to make analogies from brains to computers, but the comparisons are limited.

Five people looking at an apple are going to 'see' and construct the 'image' in their heads five different ways.

If I showed you a picture of a hotel room, or a city street corner, or a kitchen corner, you are going to 'see' things differently than others. Different things will stick out to you more than others. And thats before you even account for associations framing the experience.

It would be nice, and it does follow that brains must have some common factors or we would never agree on what a color is. Most of the real physics happens before the light ever gets from eyeball to brain.

The organic construction of nerve impulses of any kind simply doesnt allow easy 'decoding'. Im not saying shes attempting fraud, but the experiment is flawed somewhere.

Imagine trying that with any other sense. It doesnt work, but then it would be obvious.

I could believe that you could isolate factors, like light and dark, or maybe motion, and just maybe color and the perception of scale in degrees of perspective. But actual pictures is just folly.

This is how and why we have language, because thought impulses are not directly transferable, and even language is exceedingly inefficient and prone to mistakes more often than not.

If I use the word dog, everyone imagines a different thing. Whats amazing is that if I show you a picture or even a real one, your imagination is still filling in tons of what you assume is information about what you are actually 'seeing'. Vision is a surprisingly abstract, passive experience. We only assume that because we can isolate and notice common aspects (once pointed out) that we are 'seeing' the same thing. Much of that is conclusion. Our eyes are remarkably the same. Its what happens in the interpretation thats so different.
