Irwin did wonders for getting average people to care about animals. Maybe he annoyed some of the animals along the way, but he never hurt them. He was excited and exciting. He gave a ton of money to conservation efforts, and bought up loads of land for his own conservation projects. He turned his zoo into a world class facility, and built an amazing animal hospital. He did more for the world of conservation every day than you could come close to in a lifetime.

I agree with you on trophy hunters. I see no benefit in sport hunting, and I think it's done solely to stroke the ego of a person who lacks empathy.
However, Irwin didn't traumatize those animals. They were wild animals. Every day was survival for them, so when a bloke came along and man handled them for a bit, they were just glad they didn't die. There is absolutely no substitute for the excitement that he brought to conservation. And, again, I would point to all of the time and money he spent on conservation to prove he wasn't just interested in ratings.

I'm not here to defend humanity's self centered and egotistical nature. But Steve Irwin saw that and knew that the only way to get people to care about the other creatures of the earth was to show them interacting with a person and to make it very exciting. This was especially helpful for making children care, and a child who cares grows up to be an adult who cares, and to raise their own children who care. Again, he didn't hurt animals, and his methods, though unconventional and possibly agitating, worked very well.
