American here, indoor-exclusive cats are usually owned by weird upper middle class+ families (you know the ones) or people with mental and emotional issues (this includes people traumatized by losing a cat in the past).

Generally speaking cats with a home have collars and are allowed to go about their business during the day, but are called and kept in when the owner goes to sleep so they don't get fucked up too much by other cats/local wildlife (Raccoons, Opossums, etc), or killed by potential predators (coyotes, stray dogs, etc).

I don't know where the "burgers never let their cats out" meme comes from, but now I'm wondering if Europeans just plain don't take care of their cats at all...

Im american and ive never got the impression that any of what you posted is true. Every person I've met who has an indoor/outdoor car simply uses the argument that their cats want outside and they feel bad keeping it in. I've known people who's cats got into fights with other neighborhood cats and got injuries and they just kept letting them outside. One of the cats they had didn't always use the litter box and wasn't the nicest cat. I told them it was because she was territorial and constantly being outside and exposed to the other cats was stressing her out. She felt like she always had to mark her territory. She's inside only now, always uses the litter box, and has mellowed out big time.

My cat, who I unfortunately had to euthanize a few nights ago, was always an indoor cat, he didn't really enjoy going outside unless it was to just check out the weather, usually he wouldn't leave the house unless you were out there with him, the sounds of all the birds seemed to make him a little bit uneasy in his old age.

The only time he really ever left the house was to run away when he was younger, whenever my sister and I would go to our fathers for the weekend, he would get upset and think we left him for the first few weeks we had him

It makes more sense to be proactive when dealing with rodents, instead of letting a deadly new disease fester until it is ready to strike humans.
The biggest danger is new diseases that we don't have immunity too, or vaccinations or antibiotics. Cats happen to be one of the most environmentally friendly and economically effective ways of controlling these risks.

It makes me feel empty, I really enjoyed how he was independent and didn't mind if you ran off after hanging out with him for even the shortest of times, but also wouldn't mind laying with you for hours if you gave him the chance

I had a very strong bond with my cat that only grew stronger the older and closer he got to the end, one of complete trust where being nearby would render him purring in satisfaction. I keep going to these spots he spent his time at after he is gone and laying with my eyes closed, in the same way I use to lay with him, and just remember what it was like when he was still cuddling up next to me, happy as he could be, even if he wasn't feeling so well at times.

I would have done anything to just take him home for another night, I did not see him much the 2 days proceeding the event that triggered us to finally put him down. But being there with him was able to put him to rest for a little while, he remained comfortable even in a cold, bright, hospital at 3 in the morning, managing to close his eyes to rest before the doctor came in, something he wasn't able to do until i my arms.

Give all animals a chance, they will surprise you. Some you need to truly make an impression on before you can experience the love they can give you, I saw the selfish acts my cat did to try and lure me at times and tried to resent him for it, but I was a fool for trying to find an easier way out of the grief, I feel it's best to just grieve as much as I can until the well runs dry, maybe then the pain will go away.

my cat died and i have never been so upset in my entire life and have done nothing but cry for the past few days, this post has gave me the first real good hearty laugh I have not experienced in days, one that brought my spirits up for a fraction of a second, great minds think alike, thank you for taking note and grabbing the autism laden posts.
